What to expect from an equine physiotherapy appointment.
If you've never had your horse treated you may be wondering what it involves, well here is a basic breakdown of how my appointments usually run:
- I come to you at a time that works for you.
- I chat with you about your horse, any issues you may be having whether these are dramatic behaviour or subtle difficulties.
- I look at you horse stood naturally and the watch them walk and trot in a straight line away and back to me, turn a small circle in each direction and back up a few steps.
- With the horse in a location that they are relaxed and happy I then assess their symmetry and muscle tone/ reactions to palpation and flexibility through the body, neck and limbs.
- Having fully assessed the horse I start to treat using a combination of massage, stretching and electrotherapies appropriate to what I've found in assessment.
- As I'm treating I chat away with you to explain everything that I'm doing.... Most people are interested!
- I also chat through any exercises, stretches or small management changes you may be able to impliment to help maintain your horse between appointment.
Appointments usually take approximately 1 1/2 hours but can be tailored to suit you and your horse, a young horse may require a shorter appointment as their patience can run out, or a nervous horse may need a different approach. I work with all sorts of horses and they really enjoy and benefit from Physiotherapy.
