💡 This month is Feline Hypertension Awareness Month.�

High blood pressure in cats, also known as feline hypertension, is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in around 1 in 5 cats over 9 years of age.�

This disease is treatable with medication, but 82% of senior cats don't receive blood pressure checks.�

To detect hypertension early, and because it is more common in older cats, regular blood pressure checks are recommended in cats from 7 years of age. As part of our dedication to older patient care, we are now offering blood pressure checks for all cats over the age of 7years old. We recommend that these checks are done once or twice a year, but as the cat gets older these should be done a minimum of twice a year ideally. We will recommend much more frequent blood pressure checks if your cat has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, in cats with sudden trouble seeing or blindness, or in cats with neurological signs that might suggest underlying hypertension.

Feline hypertension is commonly due to a complication of other underlying medical conditions (you may hear us refer to this as ‘secondary hypertension') and is more common than 'primary hypertension' in cats. There are several medical conditions that may cause your cats blood pressure to be high. The most common cause of secondary hypertension in cats is chronic kidney disease but other diseases such as those involving the thyroid gland, diabetes and obesity can also contribute. As well as making sure we treat the underlying causes (if any) high blood pressure itself is damaging to your cats body. The effects are most serious in certain vulnerable organs such as the eyes, brain and nervous system, heart and kidneys.

Some tick advice from Pet Plan as our loved ones start spending more time outside in the warmer weather: "Of all the parasites, ticks can be among the most dastardly. These blood-sucking blighters attach themselves to your dog’s skin, usually in long grass or in woodland. They should be removed immediately to ensure they don’t pass on diseases such as Lyme disease, or cause an abscess.

Ticks can be removed using a special tick-removing tool – a twisting motion ensures the head doesn’t remain embedded in your dog’s skin. Again, a preventative ‘spot-on’ treatment can be used if you think your dog might be exposed to ticks."

Ensure to check between your dog's toes and under your dog's legs in particular!

🌟 A hello today from our fantastic Veterinary Receptionist Georgia!

☎️ Georgia is one of our newest receptionists to the team.

🐎 From a young age she wanted to work with animals and decided to pick the big gentle giants…horses!

📚 She studied them throughout college for 3 years.

🫶🏻 Before joining the Jurassic Vets team, Georgia was a riding school instructor. She left this job for a change of scenery and has fallen in love with her job, aiding owners and pets alike.

🐾 She has a mini dachshund called Milo who is always up to mischief when he isn’t too busy being a "nervous Nellie".

🐈 Along with Milo she has her beloved cat, Oliver, who is always bringing her presents!...

🏡 Georgia is best known amongst the practice for wanting to rescue and re-home every stray that comes in!!

🐥 Besides her small furry companions, she has rescued her little coblet, Jovi, her pride and joy. She loves to spend any free time with him (although she always seems to be playing chicken in the morning with him!...)

Well some of you in the Woolbrook area may of encountered a T-Rex , yes a T-Rex in and around Jurassic Vets over the last couple of days.
Inside that wonderful costume was our lovely Nurse Harriet, who is sadly moving on to pastures new.
Harriet who some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting in the practice or during a consult has the most amazing attitude to life and the most craziest sense of humour, with this being said she wanted to "leave on a high" and she has certainly achieved her goal 🤣. Aswell as her recent antics, she will be leaving us with so many wonderful memories for us to treasure, you will be truly missed. So please join us in wishing Harriet all the very best x

☀️ With the warmer weather we've had the pleasure of experiencing lately only set to become more frequent (hopefully...) as we head towards the Summer season, here are just a few tips to help keep your pets safe:

💧 Make sure you top up water bowls regularly, & if you’re going on a long walk or car journey when the weather is warm, bring along a travel bowl and a bottle of water to keep your four legged friend hydrated.

🥾 During spells of hot weather, limit exercise to early morning and evening when it is cooler, and avoid the hottest part of the day.

🚗 Never leave your dog unattended in your car on a warm day – temperatures can rapidly reach dangerous levels.

🔎 Cats can find their way into uncomfortably warm places they shouldn’t, such as non-ventilated greenhouses, sheds or cars, and then get trapped. On a hot day, this can cause heatstroke, and may even prove fatal, so make sure to check such places for lost visitors.

⛱️ Make sure your pet has access to plenty of shade outside, rather than lying in direct sunlight – it may be safest to avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm.

💡 Did you know that repeat pet prescriptions are available from Jurassic Vets?

✍🏻 You may obtain relevant veterinary medicinal products from us, or ask for a written prescription and obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or pharmacy.

👉🏻 We may prescribe relevant veterinary medicinal products only following on from a clinical assessment of an animal under our care.

‼️ A pet prescription may not be appropriate if your animal is an in-patient or if immediate treatment is necessary.

🗓️ We typically review our patients and their prescriptions every three or six months, or every twelve months for anti-parasitic (worm and flea) medications.

🛑 We cannot issue repeat prescriptions for patients whose medication review date has passed, so please book any review appointments in plenty of time so that there is no delay in issuing your prescriptions.

⏱️ We ask that you please allow 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays for your request to be processed.

💬 You can request a repeat prescription by phoning us or sending us an email. Please do not use the email for any urgent prescriptions however.

‼️ Today, the 10th May, marks exactly 1 month until the new laws regarding cat Microchipping come into practice on the 10th June 2024.

🐈 From the 10th June 2024, ALL cats over 20 weeks of age will have to be Microchipped by law.

🐈‍⬛ Kittens must be Microchipped before 20 weeks of age.

⚠️ The fine for not doing so could be up to £500.00.

👉🏻 This service operates within 7 miles of Sidmouth, through to Colyton (we can go a little further if you need - just ask us) and is available during our normal working hours.

👉🏻 Home visits require pre-booking, as we will need to find a time when one of our vets is available to come and see you and your pet.

👋🏻 A hello today from our lovely Emma!

📍 Emma grew up in mid Devon among a multitude of pets - from gun dogs to goats, and of course ponies!

🔨 Emma started her working life off as a Saddlery Apprentice here in Colyton, eventually becoming a qualified Saddlemaker, which she continues to do in her spare time.

🤩 She finally got the chance to fulfil her childhood dream of becoming a Veterinary Nurse while living in the USA.

🛬 While across the pond, she worked in several veterinary hospitals, gaining experience in all aspects of veterinary medicine - from small animal to emergency and critical care, to equine, farm and exotics, before returning to the UK to gain her RVN qualification.

🤓 Emma was a locum here at Jurassic Vets for some time, then decided to take a full time position with us as Deputy Head Nurse!

💬 She loves the nursing side of her work as much as the client care part. You'll often find her in nurse consults, or 'in the back', making sure your precious pets are given the love and care they deserve.

🤧 Uncontrollable sneezing? Wheezing? Itchiness?
