⚠️ Warning sensitive content!

🌾 Beware grass seed season is here.

🐶 Lovely Pearl came into us recently as she was chewing her right fore paw.

🐶 She presented with a small penetrative wound between her toes.

🐶 She was admitted for sedation to explore the area.

🐶 A grass seed was removed and the wound flushed.

🌾 Grass seeds are small but can be a big problem for our furry friends.

🌾 They can be found in the following places:
- Caught in fur
- Between toes/ paws
- In eyes
- Up the nose
- In ears
- Elsewhere: Grass seeds can migrate around the body once they are under the skin.

🌾 Symptoms include:
- Shaking head
- Scratching ears
- Licking/ chewing paws
- Excessive sneezing
- Sores/ swelling
- Sign of discomfort/ pain
- Intermittent high temperature

🌾 How to prevent a grass seed:
- Please avoid walking your dogs in long grass
- Check them over from head to tail after walks and remove any you may find.
- Keep them well groomed especially between the paws.

If you are concerned that your dog has a grass seed please do not hesitate to contact your vet. The sooner it is removed the less problems it will cause.

⚠️ WARNING the following post may be upsetting ⚠️

🐶 Sadly this week one of our patients presented with heat stroke. Despite the efforts from our dedicated team and multiple rounds of CPR he sadly passed away.

🐶 He presented collapsed, with a temperature of 41.9°C. We immediately started to actively cool him and administer intravenous fluid therapy but sadly his condition deteriorated.

🐶 The owners are understandably distraught, however, have agreed to share their story to raise awareness of how serious heat stroke is and how quickly it can arise.

🐶 Certain breeds such as brachycephalics, as well as young and elderly dogs are more susceptible to heat stroke and measures should be taken to keep them cool.

🐶 We would advise not to walk your dogs on hot days, however, if you choose to, please walk them at dawn or dusk when the temperatures are cooler.

🐶 NEVER leave your dog in a hot car.

🐶 If you are concerned your dog is suffering from heat stroke DO NOT hesitate to get in contact with your vets as soon as possible.

🐶 Please be aware of the signs of heat stroke and act swiftly.

🐶 Everyone meet the beautiful Maddie Moo.

🐶 Maddie Moo was anxious when she first came to us and didn’t cope well in social situations.

🐶 She has been coming in to see our nurse Leanne for regular nurse appointments for socialisation and to make her feel more comfortable in a veterinary environment .

🐶 We are pleased to report that the nurse appointments have made a massive difference and Maddie Moo is like a different dog at the vets.

🐶 She didn’t even have to wear her muzzle on her last visit and was a superstar.

🐶 Well done Maddie Moo and your lovely mum for being so dedicated ⭐️

⭐️He underwent his 5th round today and as always was an absolute super star patient.

⭐️As chemotherapy is cytotoxic it’s important we wear the appropriate PPE when handling and administering the medication.

⭐️Pepe is responding well to the treatment and enjoying life with his lovely owner.

Happy Guinea Pig Appreciation Day 🐹🥕🥦🥬🐾 Guinea Pigs are fantastic pets. They may be small, but their personality is huge.

Here’s some facts to celebrate this day:

🐹 Despite their name they are rodents, not pigs.

🐹 A female Guinea pig is called a sow. A male Guinea pig is called a Boar and baby Guinea pigs are called Pups.

🐹 Guinea Pigs are very sociable and prefer to live in groups. A guinea pig should not be housed alone.

🐹 Guinea pigs and rabbits should not live together. They have different needs and requirements and it can lead to injuries.

🐹 They require lots of space and houses/ tunnels as they like to run, hide and explore.

🐹 Their teeth are constantly growing. This is why it is important to ensure they have plenty of hay, food and enrichment to help prevent dental issues.

🐹 Guinea Pigs are often called a cavy. This is because they belong to the family Caviidae. This is a group of rodents originally found in South America, this includes Capybaras.

🐹 They are vegans. Their diets should consist mainly of hay and also vegetables such as leafy greens. This should be supplemented with Guinea pig nuggets.

🐹 They require Vitamin C supplementation.

🐹 When Guinea pigs are born they are fully formed with teeth and fur.

🐹 Guinea pigs don’t have long periods of sleep. Instead they have plenty of short naps.

🐹 They can be very vocal, especially a sound which many Guinea pig owners will be familiar with and this is the ‘wheek’ sound. This is usually a sound which is aimed at their humans to remind them they want food, or even if they simply hear the fridge door opening or a packet rustling.

🐹 Guinea pigs popcorn when excited. This is when they jump and twist. 🍿

🐹 They don’t sweat.

📷 🐹 Please share pictures of your Guinea Pigs in the comments below.

🥬 This year’s main focus for Rabbit Awareness Week is a rabbit’s diet.

🐰 A rabbit’s diet is very important. It is vital that they have the right balance of fibre, vitamins and minerals in order to remain happy and healthy.

🐰 Fibre is an essential part of a rabbit’s diet as it keeps their digestive system healthy and moving. This prevents serious illnesses such as gut stasis.

🐰 Hay is the best way to provide your rabbit with the fibre needed. 85-90% of your rabbit’s diet should be a good quality, dust-free hay.

🐰 Alongside hay, their diet should be supplemented with a small amount of nuggets, fresh greens and an unlimited supply of fresh and clean water.

🐰 A muesli diet is not suitable for rabbits as it can cause selective feeding, leading to health issues such as obesity and dental disease. It is recommended that rabbits are fed a nugget form as this prevents selective feeding and ensures a balanced diet.

🐰 When feeding fresh greens, it is important to check what vegetables are safe for rabbits to eat, as some plants and fresh greens can be poisonous.

🐰 For more information on rabbit welfare, including their diet, please visit the link below:

🍼Over the last two and a half years our small family-run business has continued to grow alongside our own little family. Some of you may already know that Laura is pregnant with our third child, and with two young boys already some aspects of the business are proving challenging despite our best efforts.

☎️ With that being said, from July 1st, we have made the decision to cease our out of hours service to ensure a healthier work-life balance. Our OOH phone lines will still be available for our clients. This means you will still be able to speak to us for help & advice 24/7. However, should your pet need it, we can provide an OOH referral on your behalf, to ensure continuity of care.

🐶 As a family-run practice we are immensely proud of what we have achieved so far and are committed to maintain the same high level of care to our patients as the day we opened. It is for these reasons that we have taken this decision. We thank you for your continued support and understanding.

If you have an appointment in the next week or so please bear in mind there is yet another road closure, this time from keycol roundabout, so follow the diversion via the Demelza Hospice. With more and more road closures please check traffic and ensure you allow plenty of time for travel. We will always try and accommodate you if you are running late but this will inevitably affect the smooth running of the practice and other patients.
