The Chihuahua is a pint-sized powerhouse with a big personality. These tiny dogs, weighing in at just 3 to 6 pounds, are known for their feisty attitude, loyalty, and love for attention. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are surprisingly active and can be quite playful. They make excellent companions for people of all ages and lifestyles. This breed loves nothing more than being with their people — even novice pet parents — and require a minimum of grooming and exercise. They make excellent apartment dogs who’ll get along with the whole family. Just make sure any children who approach know how to play gently with a small dog.

Chihuahuas have feisty and independent personalities. They are also very loyal and affectionate towards their owners. This breed is typically good with children, but they may be too small and fragile for rough play. Chihuahuas come in two varieties: smooth-haired and longhaired. Smooth-haired Chihuahuas have short, sleek fur that requires minimal grooming. Long-haired Chihuahuas have longer, flowing fur. These small, fluffy dogs require additional grooming and should be brushed regularly to prevent matting. These pups come in various colours, including black, brown, white, and tan. They can also have various colours, such as black and tan or brown and white.

When it comes to distinguishing colour, a dog’s normal vision is most like a person who has red-green colour blindness. Dogs can perceive different colours, even if they cannot appreciate the entire spectrum of colour that humans do. They just may not see the “true” colour of an object. They are also less sensitive to changes in brightness, so they can’t perceive colour in the rich, vibrant tones that we do.

For example, red appears dark brownish-grey or black to a dog. And yellow, orange, and green all look a bit yellowish to a dog. Our furry friends see blue well, but purple looks the same as blue to them. When playing a game of fetch, dogs cannot tell the difference between a red ball and a yellow ball. Luckily, they have a great sense of smell, so they can usually identify their ball and avoid mix-ups when playing a game of fetch in the park.

In addition to colour perception, canines and humans have other visual differences. In some respects, canine vision is not as acute as human vision. Dogs are more near-sighted than we are. When looking at an object from the same distance, the object may appear crisp to us but blurred to our dogs.

Bouncy, playful and full of zip, a schnauzer has a certain zest for life. The German word for snout is “schnaze”, and this dog is all about getting its nose into your business. With a big moustache and human-like eyes, even as a puppy, a schnauzer wants to know everything—and it’s your job to teach them.

The standard schnauzer is the ultimate farm dog with roots that go as far back as the 15th century. They were initially bred down to the small and miniature sizes so they could fit in between tight corners and catch rats that were causing trouble on the farm. The miniature schnauzer consists of standard schnauzer, Affenpinscher, and poodle. This unique combination gives them a different temperament from other terriers of the same size.

Due to their high intelligence, schnauzer puppies can get bored easily, so repetitive activity is discouraged. Early socialization classes for schnauzer puppies are a great help in letting them interact with dogs gently. They’d also do well in canine sports such as agility, obedience, and rally.

Do you have a Schnauzer?

How do you introduce dogs to cats, babies, or other dogs?

When introducing a dog to any other living being for the first time, it is very important to do with care. Some dogs are sensitive to new ideas or objects more than other dogs. Here are a few steps:

Take special care to control the environment. Make the room quiet and calming with no distractions. Have lots of yummy treats on hand. Start by giving your dog treats a long distance from the object (baby, cat, etc.) you are trying to introduce. At this point, you should have your dog’s undivided attention.
If your dog does not look stressed or tense and is easily listening to your commands, move closer to the object.

If your dog is very relaxed, calm, and under verbal control, continue moving forward slowly. Have your dog check in with you every few steps to get a treat. Praise them and talk calmly while doing so.

However, if at any time your dog appears stressed (tense muscles, stiff body, raised hackles, etc.) back up. Do not encourage your dog to move closer and try again another time.

Even though everyone has heard of the “doggy paddle,” dogs don’t automatically know how to swim. It’s important to slowly introduce your pet to the water to get them comfortable.

Keep in mind that not every pet likes to swim. Most cats do not like to be immersed in water, and certain breeds of dogs are better suited for water than others. Dogs with shorter snouts and those with larger bodies but short legs (like Pugs or Bulldogs) don’t fare well in the water. They may swim for survival but probably not for fun.

- Pick a shallow spot to start out and stay at the edge of the water. Allow them to play by chasing a ball or toy in shallow water.

Don’t force them in. Throwing a pet in the water who doesn’t want to swim can be traumatic for them and keep them from wanting to get in again.

- Get in the water with them. When they start paddling with their front paws, lift their hind end so they understand how to float.

- Give your pet rests. Swimming can be very tiring, so your pet needs breaks just like humans do. A tired pet is more likely to drown.

- Keep them close. They don’t know how to conserve energy and will just keep swimming until they are too tired. If this happens, you want to be nearby so you can get to them quickly.

Tiny Pomeranians generally have a bold and lively temperament. Their personality is much bigger than their size, and they're quite vocal. They can also act as alert watchdogs! These dogs tend to be affectionate with family and may bond tightly with one person.

These fluffy little dogs have a natural curiosity about the world. They are always eager to explore and interact with their surroundings. Their alert expression, bright eyes, and perky ears give them an endearing and inquisitive appearance. As with other breeds, early socialization of Pomeranian puppies is key!

Pomeranians are originally from Northern Europe and are affectionately known as Toy Poms or Pom Poms. They have more coat colours than any other dog breed. Queen Victoria of England, Martin Luther, Mozart, Sir Isaac Newton, and Michelangelo all had Pom Poms. Two Pomeranians were among the three dogs that survived the Titanic's sinking in 1912.

It’s hard to find a cuter dog than a Frenchie, with their smushed faces, roly-poly limbs, and signature bat ears. Those ears are their defining feature–you’ll never mistake a Frenchie for another kind of dog! Frenchies buck the small dog trend and aren’t known for yapping. This breed is a quietly affectionate and easy-going clown who loves playing and human company. Often touted as a lap dog, the Frenchie is equally good among families, and it won’t take much to keep yours happy as Larry. Short, regular walks will provide sufficient exercise to keep yours fit as a fiddle.

Due to their flat face and round build, Frenchies can’t handle heat, so they need a temperature-controlled home. They also can’t swim, so keep them away from pools or bodies of water. For the most part, your Frenchie will be happy wherever you are. You can get them a comfy dog bed, but let’s be real: they’re gonna want to cuddle up with you at night!

As with all other dogs, socializing your dog forms an important part of their development, they simply love a bit of rough and tumble or a game of chase. Make sure you keep a close eye on how tired or over-excited they get, they can struggle to get their breath back after over-exerting themselves.
