New resident alert!🐠
If you have been around the aquarium in the past few days you may have noticed one of our newest residents, Ella. Ella is a yellow stingray (Urobatis jamaicensis) that originally came to us from the National Marine Aquarium (NMA).
Ella can currently be found in our first open top tank in the aquarium, however she may be slightly difficult to spot as this species is known for burying their way underneath the sand to camouflage themselves to protect them from predators.
As suggested in the name, Ella, is a stingray and therefore has a venomous barb attached to the upper end of her tail that can be used in instances where she may feel threatened. In the photos you can see that extra care was taken and protective equipment was worn when putting Ella in her new home.
In the wild this species lives around 10 years and can usually be found in the western Atlantic from North Carolina to the Caribbean. Their diet mainly consists of mussels, squid, crab and some bony fish.
Although yellow stingrays have some really cool features, one of the most interesting is the fact that they glow in the dark and it has been suggested that this could be for communication purposes. As well as this they also have 360 degree vision from their periscopic eyes that allows them to detect predators from any direction 👀🌊
