The Pistol Shrimp and Watchman Goby ❤️
Recently, we were lucky enough to have these new additions to the aquarium. Their relationship is very unique and works symbiotically. It is unique in the fact that they don’t require any effort to pair and its completely instinctive, the moment a goby lays eyes on a pistol shrimp he knows they need to be a pair and they will be inseparable from there on out. During our pairs quarantine period they had to be separated for a total of six weeks but the moment they were put in the tank together they very quickly found each other again.
Their relationship works in that the shrimp will dig out a hole for the pair to live in whilst the goby keeps watch for any predators nearby. The goby will also catch food and give some to the shrimp to eat.
Pistol shrimps have some of the most incredible adaptations seen on the planet, not only can they fire pulses of water at prey reaching 62mph but when the tiny bubble that is created by this jet of water collapses it emits a flash of light that can reach temperatures of 5,000 degrees Celsius, the same temperature as the surface of the sun. This event is so quick and so small that it doesn’t cause any harm to itself or anything around it and makes it one of the hottest temperatures generated by any living organism. The goby on the other hand just has really great eyesight, something the shrimp does not🦐🐠
