I often say ‘whose walk is it?’ When clients are rushing their dogs walk, if they want to spend their allocated hours walk sniffing a lamp post then let them, they are picking up their wee mails.

WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY? 🐕🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Is the walk for you or your dog?

It's really sad to see how dogs are dragged along on a walk or reprimanded for trying to sniff something. Then there are those that are expected to heal as opposed to lose lead walking which brings them great job. Sometimes a walk is the only highlight of their day but instead of it being a pleasant experience, some are scolded, shouted at or yanked for walking too slow.

Don't force your dog to walk next you on a taut leash, like a police dog! Heel is not for every dog and not needed in every siutation. They are family members who deserve to enjoy the walk experience as much as you do. Walks and sniffing calms the mind and body. It's fantastic for mental stimulation and creating calmer dogs.

Let them drift to sniff - it's like us browsing the net or reading a great book that engages us mentally. Let them find interesting scents in new places and read 'p*e mails'...

Let them drift away to roll in interesting smells - rolling in stinky stuff is instinctual (watch that they don't eat it though). Don't get cross when they get dirty as they can bath later...💧

Let them stare for a short time at random strangers, dogs and objects. We do it all the time. Maybe they are admiring another dog's harness...who knows...💁‍♀️

Walk them in the rain so that they can enjoy the feel of soft rain drops on their heads. Walk them in the sunshine so that they can enjoy the touch of summer on their backs...🌧🌞

Let them take slow walks, explore and enjoy sniffaris on a long lead. Let them enjoy the sights, sounds and the smells of their environment. Let them relax. Let them enjoy. Let them be...

Their lives are short. Let them enjoy every moment of their walk with you. Try not to be on the phone during these walks. Be present with them. It will benefit both your mental and your health.

Note - this is a general post and not meant to cover how we achieve these outcomes with reactive dogs or dogs with other behaviourial issues. There are other ways to provide this enrichment to these dogs - please get the assistance of an accredited, force-free behaviourist if your dog has behaviour issues. All walking should be on a loose, long lead for safety and legal reasons. Oh...and please use a non aversive harness. 😉

I was listening to a webinar on understanding emotional experience in dogs given by Andrew Hale. He made this point early in his talk, and it immediately stuck a chord with me - no dog is made safer to be around by being made to feel less safe.

Much of what I do involves dogs who are coming from a place of fear and/or anxiety, and this can lead to the dog feeling they need to defend themselves, which often shows as an aggressive display.

Sadly we will see some canine professionals recommending aversive measures to work with these dogs because they 'work' and apparently solve the problem quickly.

The problem is that all this is doing is suppressing the behaviours and not dealing with the emotions that are causing them. This gives the serious and dangerous potential for emotional and behavioural fallout as the dog will feel more scared and so may feel they have no choice but to be even more aggressive.

They are now even more scared, and so are even less safe to be around than before.

It is not quick, working with these dogs in a way that is ethical, kind, and will actually get to the root of what the dog is struggling with. But concentrating on helping the dog to feel safer, to give them relief from that fear and stress, that WILL be effective, and leads to a much happier dog, who is much less scared and so is much more safe.

If you are struggling to help your dog feel safer you can find the link to my on demand webinar on how you can help to support your dog and give them that feeling of safety in the comments.

This is disgraceful.
How anyone thinks that by using fear and pain to train dogs needs banning from being anywhere near animals.

A couple of years ago someone showed up unexpectedly at a session we were having for reactive dogs.
This was at a large venue we use.
Completely out of nowhere a woman showed up at our remote location and came marching right toward us.
I had no idea who she was and she was walking towards all of us with purpose.
The clients and the dogs were wonderful....calm and everyone put into place what they had been taught (luckily this was our last session so a lot of work had been done previous).
They weren't barking or lunging (always a strange word to spell!). All the dogs attending were amazing as were the guardians/owners.

This person and their energy could have caused a reaction so I matched her sp*ed and walked right up to her to head her off.

I told her she couldn't be here as this was a private class and these were reactive dogs....she asked what a reactive dog was as I walked her to her car.
So I told her, her next comment was....

"Why would anyone want a dog like that" !

Everyone heard her say this.
I told her that was a really rude and insensitive thing to say.
These people love their dogs and often it takes just one incident for a dog to become reactive.
She didn't understand.

I know the difficulties and the judgement reactive dogs face, that also extends to their guardians/owners.

If you are out walking somewhere and see someone struggling with their reactive dog maybe think about how to help the situation rather than jump straight to self righteous judgement.

Can you give them more distance ?
Can you remove yourself quickly and calmly ?
Do they need something specific ? Ask them.
Can you stop your dog staring at theirs ?

If you can....please do BUT as you do this, acknowledge the people holding onto that lead and acknowledge that they are doing the best they can. Give them a small wave or a thumbs up.

Reactive guardians are some of the most dedicated people I know.

ALL it can take is ONE issue to occur and a dog can become reactive.....you could easily be that person at the other end of that lead.
