Welcome to Open Fields K9, where dogs and adventure go hand-in-paw! I’m Andy and I’m thrilled to share a bit about myself and why I’m passionate about providing top-notch dog walking, training, and home boarding services here in Skipton.
Growing up, my family was always bustling with the happy chaos of dogs. My Dad, a music lover, had a unique tradition of naming our dogs after female music artists. There was Elkie, the German Shepherd, who protected me fiercely until she passed when I was just two. Then came Tina, a black Labrador who seemed more fish than dog with her love for swimming. Tammy, a mixed terrier who quite literally followed my parents home one day, became an inseparable part of our family. And currently, there’s Ella, a Parson’s Terrier with a heart full of courage – she’d take on a field of bulls if given half a chance.
These early experiences fostered in me a deep admiration for the loyalty, unconditional love, and unwavering forgiveness that dogs embody. However, despite these family dogs, my Dad was always the “pack leader.” It wasn’t until I was 30 that I decided to become a pack leader myself. Enter Lela, an 18-month-old rescue Border Collie I found on Gumtree. That decision changed my life in the best way possible.
Lela was my shadow for 12 wonderful years. Despite the challenges – the constant attention she needed and the logistical gymnastics of sneaking her past bosses and into Travelodges across the country – our bond was unbreakable. She swam like a champion, much like Tina, and brought immeasurable joy to my life. Her passing was a devastating blow, and I often felt others couldn’t understand my grief. But for me, Lela was more loving and joyful than many people I’ve met.
After a heart-wrenching 18 months, I opened my heart again to Luna, a Belgian Malinois pup. Initially, I felt a twinge of guilt, as if Lela might be upset. But Luna quickly carved out her own special place in my heart. Her short coat felt different, and our relationship had its unique moments, but now, she’s my loyal companion, always ready for our next adventure.
These experiences, filled with love, loss, and new beginnings, inspired me to create Open Fields K9. Transitioning from a career as a gas engineer – crawling under floorboards and inhaling loft insulation – to working with dogs has been a revelation. At 41, I realized I’d rather be my own boss, surrounded by the four-legged friends who bring so much joy to our lives.
At Open Fields K9, we believe in the power of canine companionship and the incredible bond between dogs and their humans. Whether it’s a daily walk, training sessions to shape good behavior, or providing a loving home while you’re away, we’re here to ensure your dogs are happy, healthy, and well-loved.
Thank you for considering Open Fields K9. Here’s to many happy tails and adventures!
