The United Nations food and agriculture organisations goal is to eliminate hunger by 2030, to raise awareness of this World food day has been celebrated throughout the world on this day since 1945. The Organisation know it is a big ask but think it is possible with some effort and thought from everybody around the world to achieve their goal.

There are somewhere in the region of 150 countries around the world that plan events every year to encourage people to be a part of their mission to achieve a zero-hunger world by 2030.

Here at Natural Dog Food and Natural Cat Food, we believe in using the best ingredients, but that doesn’t mean we are wasteful with our food. We use fantastic whole grains in our Original dog food range, herbs and vegetables and we use the whole plant, nothing is wasted. We use wonderful fresh and human grade meat sources and nothing from the animal gets wasted, the parts that we do not use get used in many other products for other companies.

We also operate a carbon neutral program with our delivery partners DPD. To offset their transport emissions, they finance renewable and cleaner energy production projects by purchasing carbon credits. Together with Eco Act, the European leader on the carbon market, they have put in place an offsetting program respecting the most rigorous international standards.

We source locally and responsibly, we produce more with less on our farming enterprises through the careful application of intelligent crop production, fertilisation and herbicide control. We are constantly looking to improve in every aspect of the business continually looking to improve our systems wherever possible to maximise outputs and minimise waste for the food industry as a whole. Companies like ours play a large part in achieving these goals but at the end of the day, if we all do a little bit, it can make a huge difference.

So how ever you’re celebrating World Food Day, have fun and think about how you can achieve your own sustainable development goals.

Cats are known for their independent spirits but just like any other pet their mental well-being plays a crucial role in their overall health and happiness. Here are some tips to help your cat maintain great mental health:

• Cats are natural hunters and explorers. Create an engaging environment by providing toys, scratching posts and climbing structures. Rotate and introduce new toys to keep their interest piqued.
• Spend quality time engaging in interactive play sessions with your cat. Use feather wands or toys to mimic prey animals, These activities not only provide mental stimulation but also foster a stronger bond between you and your pet.
• Cats love to explore and hunt. Hide some of their Natural Cat Food or toys around the house for your cat to discover, This taps into their natural instincts and keeps them mentally active.
• Cats rely heavily on their senses, offer a variety of scents, textures and sounds for them to explore. Cat grass, scratching posts and toys with bells or crinkly materials can provide sensory enrichment.
• Cats also appreciate downtime so ensure your cat has a quiet, cozy space where they can retreat when they need a break. A comfortable cat bed or a cozy blanket can be their sanctuary.
• Establish a routine for play and feeding. Cats thrive on predictability and a consistent schedule can reduce anxiety and help them feel secure.
• Reward good behaviour with treats and praise. Cats respond well to positive reinforcement and it encourages them to continue their good behaviour.
• While cats may be independent, they still benefit from social interactions. Spend time cuddling and stroking your cat but respect their boundaries when they need space.
• Regular visits to the vet are essential to monitor your cats physical and mental health. Some behavioural changes could be symptoms of an underlying medical issue.
• If you have multiple cats ensure each one has their own space and resources. Cats can sometimes be territorial and providing separate feeding areas and litter boxes can reduce tension.
• Be mindful of overstimulating your cat. Some cats may become agitated if there is excessive noise or too much activity. Create a nice, calm environment for your cat when needed.
• Every cat is unique and their needs vary. Pay attention to their reactions and behaviour, adjusting your approach accordingly. Be patient and understanding of their individual personalities.
By taking these tips into account and providing a nurturing environment you can help your cat maintain great mental health. A content and mentally stimulated cat is more likely to be a loving and well-adjusted companion. A happy cat is not only a wonderful companion but also a reflection of your dedication as an owner.

National Hygiene Week is well under way. Most of us know how to maintain good hygiene for ourselves but what about our cats? Cats are known for their excessive cleaning habits, but there are still important aspects if cat hygiene that require attention from humans:

• Unlike dogs, most cats are proficient groomers and generally do not require baths. However, there may be exceptions such as long-haired cats or those with health issues which may need occasional baths. Always use a cat specific shampoo and consult your vet for guidance.
• Regular brushing helps remove loose hair, prevent matting and reduce shedding. It is especially important for long haired breeds to prevent hairballs and skin issues.
• Dental hygiene is crucial for cats, just as it is for dogs. Brush your cat’s teeth regularly with a cat specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Toys that promote dental health can also help maintain oral health.
• Check your cat’s ears regularly for dirt, wax buildup or signs of infection. Clean them gently with a vet recommended solution if needed.
• Keep your cats’ claws in check to prevent overgrowth which can lead to discomfort or injury. Use cat specific nail clippers and consult a vet or groomer if you are unsure how to trim their nails.
• Regularly scoop and clean your cats litter box to ensure a clean and odor free environment. Replace the litter as needed.
• Feed your cat a nutritious, balanced diet like Natural Cat Food to promote a healthy coat and skin. We have 2 flavours to choose from, head to Shop Cat | The Natural Dog Food Company to have a look.
• Ensure your cat has access to fresh water at all times to maintain overall health and hydration.
• Wash your cats bedding and clean their toys regularly to prevent the build up of dirt, bacteria and allergens.
• Routine check ups at the vets are essential for your cat’s well-being. Vaccinations, flea and tick prevention and deworming are part of a cat’s hygiene and health regime.
While cats are natural self-groomers they still rely on their owners for additional care and attention to maintain their overall hygiene and well-being. By staying vigilant and addressing their specific needs, you can help your feline friend stay clean, healthy and comfortable.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of Alzheimer’s, a heart wrenching condition that affect not only humans but cats too. Having a pet can also help comfort those with Alzheimer’s disease, helps keep them active and provides mental stimulation.

Feline Cognitive Disfunction often referred to as cat dementia or cat Alzheimer’s is a condition of the brain which leads to cognitive impairment, behavioural changes and a decline in overall quality of life. FCD is most commonly seen in senior cats but can affect cats of any age.

Recognising the signs of FCD is crucial for early intervention - Common symptoms can include, disorientation, changes in sleep patterns, loss of interest reduced grooming and having accidents in the house.

Diagnosing FCD is primarily based on clinical observation and the exclusion of other medical conditions that may mimic its symptoms. A veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination, blood tests and possibly neuroimaging to rule out other underlying health issues. A diagnosis of exclusions, along with a detailed history of the cats behaviour changed can help to confirm FCD.

Although there is no cure for FCD, several strategies can help its progression and improve a cat’s quality of life such as, medications, mental stimulation through play, Routine and consistency, comfortable environment and regular veterinary check-ups allowing for regular veterinary guidance.

Feline cognitive Disfunction is a challenging condition for both cats and their owners but early recognition and appropriate management can significantly improve a cats quality of life. Patience, love and understanding are crucial when caring for a cat with FCD. While there is no cure there is hope in providing comfort and support to cats that are facing this cognitive disorder.

Youth Mental Health Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of supporting and nurturing the mental well-being of our younger generation.

In recent years, the role of cats in promoting the mental health of adolescents has gained recognition and appreciation. These independent and affectionate companions offer a unique form of solace for young individuals navigating the challenges and pressures of adolescence. The soothing presence of a cat, whether through a purr, a gentle nuzzle or simply curling up beside a young person can provide much needed comfort and emotional support.
This companionship is a refuge where adolescents can express their feelings and thoughts without fear of judgement, allowing them to process their emotions and find solace in the company of their cat.

Cats also promote relaxation and stress reduction, qualities that are particularly valuable for young people facing academic pressures and social anxieties. The act of petting a cat has been proven to release oxytocin which can alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression. Additionally, the responsibility of caring for a cat helps to promote essential life skills such as empathy, responsibility and routine management offering young people a sense of purpose and structure in their lives. On Youth Mental Health Day and every day, the profound connection between young individuals and their cats should be celebrated as a valuable resource for promoting emotional well-being and resilience.

Cats are enchanting creatures, known for their captivating eyes that can express a range of emotions from curiosity to affection. However, beyond their aesthetic appeal a cats eyes are vital for their overall well-being. Understanding the significance of your cats eye health is crucial to ensuring they live a happy and healthy life.

Cats rely on their eyes to communicate. Those large, expressive orbs help convey their feelings and intentions. Whether it’s the slow blink of contentment, the dilated pupils of excitement or the narrowing of the eyes when feeling threatened your cats eyes play a central role in how they interact with you and their environment. Ensuring their eyes are healthy will enable them to engage in meaningful communication with you.

Cats are natural hunters and their keen eyesight is a critical tool in their hunting repertoire. Even if your cat is an indoor pet they still have the instincts of a predator. Healthy eyes allow them to stalk toys, chase lasers and pounce on imaginary prey providing them with mental stimulation and exercise. In the wild poor eyesight would mean a compromised ability to hunt which can lead to malnourishment.

A cats eyes can serve as a reliable indicator of their overall health. When a cat is unwell, their eyes may show signs of distress. Redness, excessive tearing or discharge can be symptoms of various underlying health issues from allergies to infections. Keeping a close watch on your cats eyes can help you identify health problems early allowing for prompt veterinary intervention.

Cats, like humans can suffer from eye conditions that if left untreated can lead to partial or complete blindness. Conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and retinal problems can all compromise your cats vision. Regular eye checkups with your vet can help detect these issues early, potentially preventing blindness and preserving your cats quality of life.

Imagine navigating your daily life in constant discomfort or without the ability to see. A cats world revolves around their senses and vision is a fundamental part of it. By maintaining your cats eye health you are ensuring they can fully enjoy their environment, interact with you and other pets and engage in their favourite activities. A cat with healthy eyes is a happier cat.

Eye problems can be painful for your cat. Conditions like conjunctivitis or corneal ulcers can cause intense discomfort and lead to behavioural changes, including aggression or withdrawal. Addressing eye issues promptly is not just about preserving their vision but also about ensuring your cats well-being and comfort.

Your cats eyes are not just windows to their soul but also a window to their overall health and happiness. Regular check-ups with a vet, good hygiene practices and prompt attention to any signs of eye trouble are essential in preserving your cats visual abilities and overall well-being. By prioritizing your cats eye health, you are investing in their quality of life and ensuring they can continue to enchant you with those mesmerizing eyes for years to come.

Heritage open days are a delightful experience for anyone curious about the past. These events offer a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore historic buildings, museums and cultural landmarks but have you ever considered bringing your cat along with you? Yes, you read that right, cats can also enjoy these historical outings.

Before embarking on your historical adventure with your cat it is essential to do some research and make necessary preparations:

• First and foremost, ensure that the heritage site you plan to visit allows cats. While it is less common than dogs, some places may be accommodating to well behaved feline visitors.
• For safety, transport your cat in a secure and well-ventilated carrier. Make sure your cats tag and microchip are up to date with your correct contact details in case you get separated.
• Ensure your cat is comfortable during the journey. Place a soft blanket or towel inside the carrier and bring along some of your cats’ favourite toys or a cozy bed.
When selecting a heritage open day to attend with your cat, consider your cats temperament and comfort level. Some cats may be more relaxed in quieter, less crowded settings, while others may be more adaptable to bustling environments. Keep in mind that some heritage sites may have restrictions on the types of animals they allow, so check their policy in advance.

Cats are known for their need for comfort and familiarity, so here are some tips to ensure a pleasant experience;

• Pack essentials such as their favourite flavour of Natural Cat Food, water, water bowl, litter box, poo bags for disposing of waste from litter box or ground.
• Find a quiet corner or secluded area where your cat can take a break from the excitement and relax if needed.
• Some cats are trained to walk on a harness or lead. If your cat is comfortable with this it can provide a safe way for them to explore a bit outside the pet carrier.
While enjoying the heritage site with your cat it is essential to maintain good pet etiquette:

• Even if your cat is exceptionally well-behaved, keeping your cat on a lead or secured in a carrier at all times is essential for their safety and the comfort of other visitors.
• Not everyone is as fond of cats as you are. Ensure your cat doesn’t approach strangers without permission and be mindful of their space.
• Carry poo bags with you at all times and promptly clean up any messes.
Heritage open days offer various activities that both you and your cat can enjoy:

• Many heritage sites feature gardens and peaceful areas where you and your cat can enjoy a relaxing walk or simply take in the surroundings.
• Engage with the history and architecture while your cat accompanies you. Their presence can make the experience even more enjoyable.
• Capture the moment by taking photos of your cat against historical backdrops,
Taking your cat to a heritage open day can be an enriching and unforgettable experience. It allows you to share your passion for history and culture with your beloved pet while enjoying the fresh air and fascinating sights. With proper preparation, respect for the rules and attention to your cat’s comfort, you can embark on a historical journey together, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. So, don’t hesitate to explore history with your feline friend, it’s a purr-fect adventure waiting to happen!

Why do we only eat hot cross buns around Easter time? We are huge fans of the hot cross bun here at Natural Cat Food Company so imagine the excitement in the office this morning when we realised it is National Hot Cross Bun Day!

Izzy won’t be joining us for hot cross buns today ad it is not only inadvisable but potentially dangerous for cats to eat hot cross buns. These sweet treats typically contain ingredients like raisins, currant or sultanas which are toxic to cats and can lead to kidney damage or failure when ingested. The high sugar and fat content in these baked goods can contribute to obesity and other health issues in cats when consumed regularly.

To ensure your cats well-being it is crucial to resist the temptation to share human foods like hot cross buns and stick to a Natural Cat Food diet.

04/09/2023

Happy Cat Month (in the US) is here again and we thought it was the purrfect time to reflect on the well-being of our cats. Among the many aspects of cat care, diet stands as a cornerstone for their health and happiness. In recent years, the trend of feeding cats a natural dry kibble diet has gained traction for its potential benefits.

A Natural Cat Food dry kibble aims to mimic a cat’s ancestral diet as closely as possible. This diet primarily consists of high-quality protein, moderate fat and minimal carbohydrates, a composition that aligns with what cats would consume in the wild.

Advantages of feeding Natural Cat Food

• Protein rich nutrition: Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their bodies are optimised for digesting and utilising animal-based proteins. Natural dry kibble diets typically prioritise high protein content, providing the essential amino acids cats need for muscle maintenance, organ function and overall vitality.

• Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for a cat’s overall well-being. A balanced natural dry kibble diet can help control calorie intake while ensuring adequate nutrition, making it easier to manage your cat’s weight.

• Dental health: The crunchiness of Natural Cat Food can contribute to better dental health. The abrasive texture can help reduce plaque buildup and promote healthier teeth and gums.

• Convenience: Natural Cat Food is convenient for pet owners, as it can be left out for cats to graze throughout the day without spoiling. This can be particularly beneficial for busy individuals who may not be able to feed their cats at specific times.

• Reduced risk of allergies: Natural Cat Food has excluded common allergens such as wheat, dairy and soya as well as by-products, derivatives and all artificial ingredients, including Taurine.

Why not take a look at our Natural Cat Food range Shop Cat | The Natural Dog Food Company and see which one your cat wants to try first!

As we celebrate Happy Cat Month, lets embrace the opportunity to provide our cats with optimal car. Feeding a Natural Cat Food diet can contribute to their health, vitality and overall well-being.

We are looking forward to being back in the office tomorrow after a lovely bank holiday spent with family and friends and today is no exception.

The BBQ is lit, the food is ready and the guests are just about to arrive for annual National BBQ Week BBQ! Purdy is poised ready for plenty of attention from everybody when they arrive, Izzy on the other hand has disappeared!

Remember to ask you guests not to feed pets and avoid leaving food around. Skewers can cause severe injuries if ingested and there are lots of common BBQ foods that are bad for dogs. Keep gates and doors closed to avoid pets escaping and provide a safe place for them to escape if they feel overwhelmed.

We love seeing what you guys have been up to with your pets over the Bank Holiday so don’t forget to drop a picture in the comments section.

22/08/2023

Today is National Take Your Cat to The Vet Day in America. Although we are not in the USA, we thought it was a great one for us to adopt. We aren’t suggesting that you call your vets demanding an appointment for your cat today but have you thought about the last time you took your cat to the vets for a check-up?

Making sure you take your cat for regular visits to the vets not only gives you some piece of mind knowing that your cat is doing well but also gives your vet the opportunity to monitor your cat for any health issues you may not have picked up on.

A vets check up only takes 15 – 20 minutes and are carried out by vets who are trained to keep your cat calm whilst they do their check-ups. A routine check-up for your cat could include a weight check, temperature check, heart rate monitoring, ear and eye health check, dental check and many other things.

Many humans don’t like to take their cats to the vets as they worry that the visits upset their cat. Here are some ways of making the trip to the vet a little less daunting;

• If you can keep your cat’s carrier out and about, all the time, making it part of the furniture so that your cat doesn’t associate it solely with a car ride and being examined by a stranger.
• If you can’t keep the cat carrier out all the time at least have the carrier out for a few days before the vet visit, so your cat can get used to seeing it.
• To encourage your cat to see the carrier as a place of comfort, try adding some of their food as a tasty treat for them in the carrier, with a soft blanket giving them the smell and comfort of home.
• When travelling with your cat, place the cat carrier in the footwell behind the passenger seat to avoid travel sickness.

In fields so wide where sunlight glows,
Izzy the cat, her spirit shows.
Through rustling grass and gentle breeze.
She plays and roams with joyful ease.

Pouncing on shadows, chasing a dream.
Her playful antics, a charming stream.
Whiskers aquiver, eyes so bright.
Izzys laughter fills the light.

Golden meadows, her playground wide.
In Izzys world, she can’t hide.
A furry dancer, so wild and free,
Her joy in the fields is a sight to see.
