Nosework is a fantastic activity that appeals to dogs of all ages, from playful puppies to seasoned seniors.

For young dogs, it provides an engaging outlet for their boundless curiosity, helping to channel energy constructively.

Adult dogs thrive on the mental stimulation and focus it requires, which enhances their problem-solving skills and strengthens the bond with their handler.

Even older dogs, who may be less physically active, can enjoy the gentle yet enriching nature of scent detection, keeping their minds sharp and spirits high.

Always have a plan!

When you do any training with your dog decide what it is you want to work on and write up a quick plan of how you are going to do it.

Work on ONE thing not everything all at once. If you are working on indication then work on indication, if you are working on search patterns then work on search patterns. Don't just put out a hide and hope for the best.

Don't rush it! Perfection takes time! Short sessions with lots of little breaks and play in between. Don't try and drill the poor dog like he was an army cadet on PT training.

Keep it fun for you and your dog.

Keep a note of your achievements so you can work on the next steps.

Well done to everyone who took part in The National Nosework Association trials throughout 2024 but a special shout out to our K9 Scent & Search UK Squaddies who have travelled far and wide and worked their socks off this year.

First up in the K9 Scent & Search UK winners mentions is Sue & Myka who have won Foundation & Pre-Entry Team of the Year so that means another trophy for Sue who was Team of the Year Winner 2022.

Then on to the main leage table.

We have Alison & Hugo gaining Team of the Year
Rachel with both her girls placing 3rd with Bramble and 9th with Gwen and then Sue again, this time with Luther taking the 10th spot.

Rachel & Gwen also won the Crossbreed/AVNSC of the Year

Emma & Bucky won Working Dog of the Year

And Alison & Hugo again with Utility Dog of the Year

Amazing efforts from all this year.

It's not about the winning, it'a about the taking part is very true with The National Nosework Association, it is very much a personal journey but it is only fair that we recognise those who have worked so hard across the year.

🎉🐾 Happy New Year from all of us at K9 Scent & Search UK! 🐾🎉

As we wave goodbye to 2024 (and a few rogue soaks found in the search area), we wanted to take a moment to thank YOU—our incredible clients, canine companions, and supporters—for making this year unforgettable. 🐕💜

Together, we’ve sniffed out success, tackled challenges with wagging tails, and achieved some seriously impressive goals. This year alone, we’ve progressed dozens of amazing teams through our workshops, classes, and courses—and we’ve loved every single minute of it!

From enthusiastic puppies discovering their first scent to seasoned sniffer pros staging up their skills, it’s been a joy to see the bond between handlers and dogs grow stronger and more confident.

We’re so proud of everything our teams have accomplished, and we can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store. More workshops, more nosework, and probably more laughs! 😆🐶

A little slo mo video of one of the Beancroft Scentwork dogs working in to an odour that was in behind the track of the digger on a rock. An open hide that was travelling towards the door over the trailer to the right of the pictue. Watch his tail movements. Fascinating.

I seem to have been driving for days and away from home for weeks. That isn't quite the case but feels like it. Up in Bedford in my capacity as co-founder of The National Nosework Association then teaching the following day before heading out to Norfolk then home to head up to Colne Valley to Judge then home to catch up on some business stuff (some of you will know that we are negotiating a new lease for our premises and it's not been easy going) then The National Nosework Association hat back on and up to Harper Adams to check out the venue for next years event then back to Malvern to actually spend a little time training my own dogs, this is a real luxury for us. I feel like I have been on the road and away from home forever. Yesterday was planned to be a productive admin day before working last night and that all went a bit south when one of my dogs was injured on what should have been our nice relaxing walk and we ended up Riverside Vets Canvey. She is OK but I may need therapy to get over the trauma of hearing my dog screaming in pain and not being able to see her. This isn't a moan, I am lucky to do what I love as my job but it does mean I get very behind on stuff so it is a plea to bear with me and if I am a week late on a call back then please understand why. Running your own businesses with 5 dogs and a home is a blessing and a curse.

Nosework & Trailing

I became involved with scentwork in 2012 and it has been a growing obsession ever since. The dogs nose is such an amazing thing and so under-utilised in training and mental stimulation for pet dogs.

Scentwork has been part of the K9 Solutions training package for about 5 years and it is now time to give it it’s own home and brand and so K9 Scent & Search UK has been launched. A dedicated page and website for the nosework and trailing enthusiast to find all the information they need on courses, workshops & trials.

I am a member of the Elite WSDA Scent Squad, a trainer and judge for Scentwork UK and have completed trail training with Jeff Schettler of GAK9 and Karin Lee of British Mantrailing Association.

Our aim is to bring nosework and trailing to pet dog owners for fun, fitness and stimulation. Give our clients something to aim for whilst having fun with their dogs.
