Diabetes is one of the most common hormonal diseases in a dog. Look out for these 4 signs:

🐾 INCREASED URINATION
Caused by the glucose drawing water with it into the urine

🐾 EXCESSIVE THIRST
Caused by the body trying to keep up with the excess fluid loss

🐾 INCREASED HUNGER
Because the body thinks it’s starving

🐾 WEIGHT LOSS
Because sugars are lost in the urine. This means the dog effectively isn’t getting enough calories and so the body starts to break down the fat reserves as well.

You know your dog best, if they don’t have the symptoms listed above but you are still concerned it’s always best to contact your vet.

🐾 WHAT IS DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS ?
Left untreated, diabetes can lead to a much more serious condition called ‘diabetic ketoacidosis’ (DKA). DKA is when a product called ketones builds up in the body if cells aren’t able to get the energy from blood sugars. Ketones in large number are extremely dangerous and cause the following symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Not eating
- Low energy
- Appearing unsteady (as if they are drunk)
- Collapse
- Breath that smells sweet (like nail polish remover or pear drops)
Symptoms of DKA are an emergency - if you notice them, contact your vet immediately.

🐾 WHAT IS CANINE HYPO?
Hypoglycemia refers to an abnormal decrease of glucose concentration in the blood, or more simply - low blood sugar levels.
Emergency First Aid for Canine Hypo
- Contact your vet immediately for an emergency appointment
- Rub something very sugary such as honey or jam onto your dog’s gums (be careful not to get bitten)

I'm so thankful to all my regular dog grooming clients and also new clients that are coming on board. I feel so overwhelmed with the amazing reviews I'm receiving and have only just doing them on Facebook as don't get much time to go looking.

Don't get me wrong, I'm always constantly learning new skills within the dog grooming industry and what with also being a dog grooming teacher too it really does make me feel positive about my journey as a Dog Groomer.

All through the summer and into the autumn ticks and fleas are a real nuisance for our dogs:

Fleas
Itching is the first and main symptom. Excessive scratching can cause inflammation and infection, and sometimes dogs can suffer from allergic dermatitis. A severe flea infestation can lead to anaemia due to the extent of blood loss as the fleas feed.

Keep up to date with flea treatment and check your dog regularly so that you can catch a problem early. Fleas can also carry tapeworm eggs so, if your dog does get fleas, you will need to treat for worms too. Fleas only hop on and off the dog to feed so most of them will actually be living in the dog’s bedding and your carpets – you’ll need to treat your house, and probably more than once due to the length of the flea’s lifecycle..

Ticks
Ticks can carry many diseases and it’s possible for one tick to be carrying several at the same time. The most prevalent is Lyme Disease, although it’s actually still quite rare and generally less serious in dogs than in humans. That said, it is possible to cause damage to joints, kidneys, heart and nervous system. Watch for symptoms of swelling or pain in the joints and an elevated temperature, which can occur up to two months after infection.

Checking your dog regularly for ticks is important and so is the method of tick removal. Causing stress to the tick will likely cause it to regurgitate into the dog and increase the infection risk. Leaving it to fall off of its own accord will also increase the risk due to the length of time it is in the dog. You also don’t want to risk leaving the head/mouth parts behind which could result in an infection. The safest method of removing a tick is by using a tick twister/tick tool. They only cost a few pounds so are well worth the investment.

DOG TEETH TYPES
Each type of dog tooth — incisor, canine, premolar and molar — serves its own function. Here’s a breakdown of what each type of dog tooth does and where these teeth are located:

🦷 CANINES
The canine teeth are the longest teeth in the front of the mouth. Dogs have four canines teeth, and the canines are well-developed and slightly curved to better tear or puncture objects and food.

🦷 INCISORS
The teeth in the front of a dog’s mouth are called incisors. The top and bottom jaw have six incisors. Dogs use their incisors mostly to grab objects, like food, but they are also used for scraping or nibbling food and grooming as well.

🦷 PREMOLARS
Just behind the canines are the premolars. Adult dogs have 16 premolars—eight on the top jaw and eight on the bottom jaw. These chewing teeth are used for shearing through and grinding up food.

🦷 MOLARS
Molars are the teeth in the back of a dog’s mouth. They can look a lot like premolars. There are four molars on the top jaw and six on the lower jaw. Molars are used for grinding or chewing food into small pieces to make it easy to swallow and digest.
