A lot goes into creating the ideal home for rabbits 🐇

Their environment has a huge impact on their health and wellbeing, so it's really important to make sure their home provides for all of their complex needs 🏡

Rabbits can live indoors or outdoors, but a hutch is not enough. Your rabbits’ living space should be as big as possible. 10ft x 6ft x 3ft/3m x 2m x 1m is the absolute minimum recommended space for a pair of rabbits.

Remember, the better their living space, the happier they’ll be!

⚖️ A new law I was proud to help guide through the House of Commons creating the specific criminal offence of ‘Pet Abduction’ comes into force from today. ⚖️

Anyone convicted of the theft of a pet can now face a prison sentence of up to five years. 🚓

Pet theft causes heartbreak for the families affected and in my view it has been wrong that the theft of a beloved pet was treated as a theft of property, with little distinction in how it was treated by the law from the theft of a wallet or handbag. I am pleased that pet theft is now it’s own specific offence, reflecting that it is actually the abduction of a beloved member of the family. 💔

I know a lot of local residents involved in animal protection supported this law and I am pleased that from today pet thieves will face harsher sentences for their awful crimes. 🐕 🐈 🐩 🐈‍⬛

We’re pleased to welcome the new Pet Abduction Act, coming into force from today, 24 August, which introduces tougher penalties for stealing dogs- up to five years in prison, a fine, or both.

This law is a crucial step in recognising the emotional value of dogs and the devastation caused to victims of pet theft.

We are running an extra donation session in Loughborough next week on Tuesday 27 August due to blood stocks being very low 😢

👀 PLEASE WATCH 'Brian May: The Badgers, the Farmers and Me' on BBC Two at 9pm on Friday, 23 August.

We were invited to a preview screening, and we say,
"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Don't miss it"

Brian May says his new badger cull documentary "will outrage viewers more than anything since the Post Office scandal." We agree.

The documentary also features our 2024 Symposium speaker, large mammal vet Dick Sibley, whose insights are measured and thought-provoking.

We hope farmers will watch it, too. The documentary will reveal how far the government and its agencies *actually* support farmers in finding effective solutions to the bTB crisis.

The documentary will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer from next Friday, too.

❤ UNDER TWO MINUTES!! ❤

That's how long it took before your incredible generosity took us to 100% of our JustGiving target. Within 20 minutes we had hit 300% and, now, we're almost at 1000% of our funding goal! 🤯🥰😳

We often say that we have the best supporters out there, but you guys have really knocked things out of the park with your kindness this time! There are no words to say just how grateful we are. We quite literally could not do this without your support!

Why do cats eat grass? 🌱

Well no one is quite sure, but here are some theories:

1. Grass contains folic acid and fibre, nutrients that your cat needs in their diet, which may attract them to eating it.
2. Eating grass can help your cat to pass furballs and pass poo more easily.
3. It could be that your cat just likes the freshness of the grass, it's taste and texture.

Allowing them to eat cat-safe grass might even distract them from nibbling on other plants that might be poisonous for them 💐

It’s a natural behaviour for cats, and is usually nothing to be concerned about, so it’s best not to discourage them from doing it!

Have you heard of leptospirosis? 😧

Leptospirosis, often shortened to lepto, is a disease caused by bacteria that damage vital organs, such as the liver and kidneys. It’s very serious and often fatal in dogs.

Dogs can catch leptospirosis from:

- Another infected dog
- Sniffing/licking the ground where an infected dog has urinated
- Urine from an infected cow, pig or rodent
- Infected wet ground or fresh water - lepto can live in wet ground and fresh water for several months

Leptospirosis can also be spread to other dogs by infected dogs, mice, rats and cows but can also be caught from infected water. So, if your dog lives on a farm, kills rodents or spends a lot of time swimming, they’re at a much higher risk of catching it ⚠️

There are a few different types of leptospirosis bacteria and each one is slightly different. Fortunately, we can vaccinate against the types of lepto bacteria commonly found in the UK. Find out more: http://pdsa.me/rwlP

We are encouraging residents, visitors and shop owners to report any sightings of young persons, mainly males, on top of shops in Furtherwick Road, .

We have received reports of this anti-social behaviour and need to speak to the young persons as soon as possible to divert them from this behaviour in order that they do not come to any harm.

We are working with local businesses on how to secure roof access.

We've seen a lot of bats here at SEWH recently, but this little one certainly takes the crown! 👑

He, as you may have guessed, is a brown long-eared bat and he needed our help after being found grounded outside a work unit.

A little underweight and dehydrated, he has been cared for at the centre for a few days and, amazingly, is already doing much better!

Now much more vocal and able to fly perfectly, we are hoping he can return to freedom very soon 🦇
