โ๏ธ (HRI) such as heatstroke stroke in pets โ๏ธ
As Summer has now finally arrived please be mindful of the signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses (HRI) such as heatstroke :-
Excessive Panting
Bright red or pale gums
Lethargy /weakness along with confusion
Drooling or foaming at the mouth
Vomiting & Diarrhoea
Shaking and seizures
Heat stroke and similar heat related illnesses can be potentially fatal for pets and can occur following exercise or from exposure to hot environments. For example being left in a garden with no water or shade.
A good way to think of it, is if its too hot to go for a walk with a padded jacket on. Itโs most likely too warm to walk your dog.
Walk early morning or late evening before 8am or after 8pm.
For any pet suffering from a Heat stroke

1. Firstly move your pet indoors onto cool flooring or if outside to a shady area.
2. Start to gently pour cool ( NO ICE ) water all over your pets fur and pads avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth areas.
3. Offer you pet cool water to drink ( NO ICE )
4. If possible use an electric or manual fan or
place your pet near an open door or window
to increase air flow round your pet.
5. A new study from RVC has highlighted that
stabilising your pet and getting it wet
before moving to the vets can increase the
pets chance of survival.
6. On the advice from your vet clinic
Transport your pet to the Vet Clinic.
If possible in a vehicle with air conditioning
and continue to cool you pet while you travel.
