Happy New Year from Pet Trails ❤️

As we come to the end of another year, we just want to say a huge THANK YOU to every single one of our dog walking and training clients. Your loyalty, trust, ongoing support and the way you always cheer us on from the sidelines truly means the world to us 🙏

This year has been full of both wins, but also some harder days and challenges, which I don’t think any small business can escape. But we’ve had the absolute privilege of welcoming some incredible new dogs and watching them make huge progress with their life skills, socialisation, training and confidence building. Seeing dogs grow, relax, learn and thrive is why we do what we do and why we’re so passionate about i! ❤️🐾

On a personal note, 2025 also brought a milestone moment for Pet Trails becoming fully assessed, qualified and now registered as dog trainers with ABTC/PACT. We’re so proud to keep our standards high and firmly rooted in modern, science led practice and to be assessed by such leading industry experts to ensure our skill set and knowledge have been properly tested 🙌

We’re proud to echo and stand firmly within the force-free movement, championing ethical dog welfare and approaches that are backed by science, showing us again and again that kindness, compassion and understanding are the best ways to help our dogs learn and feel safe in the world! 🙏

What makes all of this even more special is our little Pet Trails community. The support, friendship and kindness within it never goes unnoticed, and we’re incredibly grateful to be part of something that genuinely lifts each other up.

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re so excited for:
✨ Lots more training (Please do start to recommend us, if anyone is searching for a qualified trainer)
✨ Working with some very special dogs we’ll be helping along the way
✨ And plenty of new business developments we can’t wait to share and we’re excited about!

Also, as tonight is New Year’s Eve, we also want to gently remind everyone that it can be a challenging time for many dogs. Fireworks, loud noises, visitors and changes to routine can quickly become overwhelming. Please continue to advocate for your dog by monitoring their environment, limiting exposure to noise and busy spaces, offering calm, safe places to retreat, and respecting their signals if they need space. Your understanding, patience and protection, help them feel safe during what can be a stressful night 🥰

Thank you for trusting us with your dogs, for believing in what we do, and for being such an incredible community.

Wishing you and your dogs a happy, healthy and compassionate New Year 🥂🐶💫 Have a fun night!

Love Team Pet Trails 💛🐾

We’ve been doing recall training and emergency stop with Pumpkin and felt today she had good enough recall to safely let her off in a public park. She was 100% with her recall - came back every single time she was called, even with distractions approaching, which for such a young puppy is just amazing! 🤩 We’re so proud of her!

Then she’s been for her first visit to our vets, (who are just outstanding) and she’s got a clean bill of health and was a super, super, good girl! Pumpkin will defo be snoring later! 😂🐶❤️💤

Christmas Eve feels like a good moment to pause and say thank you 🙏

To every client who trusted us with their dog this year. To every early morning session, muddy lead, training 1-2-1’s, and check-in message. To every dog who made us laugh, challenged us, and reminded us why we do this! It’s all so worth it!

But our proudest moments come from watching our individual dogs flourish. Watching dogs form real friendships, learn how to be around each other calmly, play nicely and genuinely enjoy each other’s company - this is always incredibly special.

We’re especially proud of the dogs who came to us with little, or no social experience (particularly Merlot, Ernie, Sooty & Sweep). The ones who found other dogs overwhelming, worrying, or had big feelings we needed to help them work through. Through careful management, support, and going at their pace, we’ve watched them build confidence and flourish into happy, relaxed social dogs. That kind of progress never gets old and it makes us incredibly proud of them and of our business! ❤️🙏🐾

But our clients support means more than you probably realise. Running a dog business isn’t just a job – it’s a company built on trust, relationships, and a shared love of dogs, and we’re so grateful to be part of that with you.

We hope you and your dogs have a peaceful, happy Christmas, whatever that looks like for you – quiet walks alone, family chaos, or somewhere in between.

Thank you for being part of our community and for supporting a small, local business.

From Pet Trails, we wish you all a very merry Christmas and we can’t wait to see you in the New Year 🐾🎄###xx

Just listen to the snoring! 💤😂

It’s been a big day for Pumpkin! She’s been on her biggest walk so far (all the way along the river - she met ducks, people, dogs, scooters, children, boats and the police!), AND she’s been left home alone for the longest time so far (1:15 hrs), and she coped so well 🙏❤️

Before we left her, she had a walk to wear her out, then an exciting snuffle mat and licki mat to keep her focused and engaged when we left and classical FM on Alexa. And of course the company of her furry siblings, Toffee and Dora 🥰

We watched her on the puppy cam and she was able to self soothe and regulate herself pretty well. But, she was very happy when we came home and gave her cuddles 🥰

She’s getting braver and bigger by the day! Well done little pupster - we’re so proud of you! ❤️🙏🐾

Christmas Safety 🐶

Christmas is a lovely time, but from a dog’s point of view it can be a lot! Many dogs may struggle to cope, so planning is important.

Every year we hear of more stressed dogs, close calls, and bite incidents around Christmas than almost any other time of year. Not because the dogs have behavioural issues, because they haven’t been considered.

More people. More noise. Kids running. Food everywhere. No routine.

A few reminders to help keep dogs, children, and visitors safe over the festive period:

🎄 Give your dog an escape option
Set up a quiet space away from guests where your dog can rest undisturbed. A spare room, baby gate, or calm corner can make a huge difference. This isn’t exclusion if done correctly, it’s protection. Give your dog a lovely walk and then some enrichment such as a snuffle mat Kong, chews

🎄 Supervise all dog & child interactions
Even the most tolerant dog has limits. Excited kids and overtired dogs are a risky mix. If you can’t actively supervise, separate them.

🎄 Advocate for your dog
Not every dog wants hugs, pats, or people leaning over them. It’s okay to say, ‘Please don’t touch him’, or ‘She needs some space’.

🎄 Watch stress signals
Lip licking, yawning, turning away, hiding, freezing, making themselves small, are your dog asking for space. Listening early prevents escalation later.

🎄 Stick to routine where possible
Walks, meals, and rest at familiar times help dogs cope with the festive chaos.

🎄 Manage food carefully
Every Christmas, vets see a big increase in dogs coming in after eating things they shouldn’t, especially meat wrappings from bins, skewers, string, foil, fatty leftovers, and dropped food.
Secure bins, clear plates quickly, and remind guests not to feed your dog. What seems harmless to us can be dangerous (and expensive) very quickly.

🎄 Short, positive interactions beat long exposure
It’s okay if your dog only joins the gathering for short periods. They don’t need to be involved in everything unless they enjoy it!

The goal isn’t a ‘perfectly behaved dog’ at Christmas. The goal is a dog who feels safe, respected, protected and understood.

A calm, well managed dog is far less likely to feel overwhelmed and far less likely to bite, or end up at the vets.

Your dog doesn’t need to love Christmas. They just need you to have their back and to advocate for them 🐾

Impulse Control with Toffee 🐶

Impulse control isn’t about denying our dogs, it’s about giving them choices to make.

In this video, Toffee can clearly smell (and then see) the treats in my firstly closed, and then open hand. I’m not asking her to ignore them through force or frustration.

Instead, I’m rewarding her for
• eye contact
• pausing
• thinking before acting

The treats she can see aren’t the reward. They’re just information and options for choices to make.

When Toffee chooses to disengage from the visible treats and check in with me, she gets something even better, a higher-value reward from my other hand.

This is how dogs learn that:

🐾 self-control pays
🐾 looking to their human brings good things
🐾 they are safe to slow down and think

Impulse control is an emotional skill, not a test of obedience. We’re building regulation, not suppression.

And just like with humans, it grows best when the nervous system feels calm, supported, and successful.

Toffee is an insane foodie, so it really takes some effort for her to show impulse control with food ❤️

This kind of work doesn’t just build self-control, it also builds confidence, because the dog learns they can make good choices and succeed 🐾🐶

There’s no suppression, no aversives, no punishment, or physical control from the human needed to stop her from grabbing the treats on show …. Just the dog making great choices 🙌

And Sunday training in PJ’s with messy hair is the way forward 😂

Our gorgeous boys and girls enjoying today! ❤️ Although it was so sunny most the photos haven’t come out!🌞

We had 2 birthdays to celebrate (happy birthday beautiful Maisie and Nellie 🥳) and some special treats from Mabel’s lovely Mummy (Karen), which all the pooches LOVED! Thank you Karen 🙏

All the dogs played beautifully and had a super, duper, fun last play session before we break up for Christmas 🎄 😍❤️🙌🐾

Wow! ☔️

What a day of water and mud! 🙈😂

We had a LOT of soggy doggies today! BUT, the good news was, none of them cared and we had no miserable dogs wanting to go home! They all had a blast whilst getting soaked and blown around by the elements! 💨 🌧️
