⚠️ Dangers of and to pets 🐕🐈 advice to keep them safe during .

Grit is dangerous to your pets if they accidentally ingest it. It can cause dehydration, liver problems, and pancreatitis - possibly leading to death if a pet consumes enough of it.

Antifreeze contains a deadly chemical called ethylene glycol, it can easily be fatal if swallowed by pets.

In order to keep your pets safe, experts offer the following suggestions:

* Walking – Some pet owners in suburban and rural environments prefer to let their animals out on their own. This is probably not a good idea if you know there is fresh salt on the roads. The salt can become lodged in the paws of your animals then ingested when they groom themselves. Experts suggest you walk your animals so that you can monitor their grooming.

* Cleaning – After you complete your walk, be sure to immediately clean the paws of your pets. Some warm water and a soft brush should take care of it. You might also want to leave your shoes in an area where the pets cannot get near them. This prevents them from licking the salt off the shoes when you are not around.

* Antifreeze – If you do use antifreeze to clean your vehicle's windscreen, make sure you clean up any spills on the ground. Antifreeze is somewhat sweet, so it can be tempting to animals that might walk through the area.

* Gritting – If you grit around your own property, go as easy on the salt as you can. You really do not need to use the large amounts of grit you normally see caked on pavements and driveways. Moreover, the less you can use the fewer problems you create for your own pets and other neighbourhood animals.

Should you notice one of your pets acting strangely after coming in from winter weather, do not hesitate to get the animal to the vet as quickly as possible.

One of the early signs of salt ingestion is excessive salivation after your dog or cat has groomed itself. Other signs include lethargy, excessive drinking and strange noises that indicate the animal might be in pain.

With a little bit of caution you can keep your pets safe.

⚠️ Should you spot a fox running across the road, be ready for another following closely behind. During mating season, it's not unusual for foxes to drive away rivals or pursue females.

🙏 Please exercise extra caution when driving.

For many vets it’s a difficult time of year as well as the owners of such a beautiful breed sharing to try to help 😔

Dealing with grief from taking a life.

Due to the new XL Bully legislation many of my colleagues and friends are now forced to put healthy dogs to sleep, and it is now about to step up massively.
It’s has been very difficult for me to see the rescues I’m affiliated with desperately begging for homes for typed dogs before it’s too late, seeing dogs dumped and abandoned (without a good reason) ahead of the ban, and generally seeing the fear and confusion from caring dog owners trying to understand whether their dog is deemed to be of ‘type’ or not.
I can’t even imagine what it must be like for the rescue and veterinary staff themselves that have to watch these innocent homeless dogs waiting for the inevitable, and having to kill them day after day…

Honest Hounds have organised a mental health talk with the renowned human trauma therapist Dawn Walton to discuss the fallout of taking life when it is NOT for the animals benefit.

Live Friday 5th January 7pm / it is Free for Vets, Vet nurses and those in rescue affected by the reality of this legislation.

Please share with any vets and dog professionals you know that may benefit.

Today the government announced the details of the XL Bully ban. We have produced a copy of the official criteria of breed standard which will be used by enforcers below.

Although the government has stated your dog must be registered by 31st Jan 2024, they haven't yet stated what the process for doing that will be!

New laws banning XL Bully type dogs have been laid in Parliament today, as the Government adds the breed to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The announcement fulfils the Government’s pledge to put in place laws to ban the breed by the end of the year and protect the public following a concerning rise in fatal attacks.

Under the new rules, which come into force at the end of the year, it will be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL Bully dogs to stray in England and Wales.

From this date, these dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. Owners of XL Bully dogs are recommended to start training their dog to wear a muzzle and to walk on a lead ahead of the legal restrictions coming into force.

Breeders have also been told to stop mating these types of dogs from now in preparation of it being a criminal offence to sell or rehome these dogs.

From 1 February 2024 , it will then become illegal to own an XL Bully dog if it is not registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs. By staggering these two dates, current owners of this breed will have time to prepare for these new rules.

Owners who wish to keep their dogs will have until the end of January to register them and will be forced to comply with strict requirements. As well as being muzzled and kept on a lead in public, these dogs must also be microchipped and neutered.

Dogs under one year when the ban comes in must be neutered by the end of the year, older dogs must be neutered by the end of June.

From 1 February, owners without a Certificate of Exemption face a criminal record and an unlimited fine if they are found to be in possession of an XL Bully type, and their dog could be seized.
