We're delighted with this wonderful feedback from the owners of brave Milo. 💕🐶

"We cannot thank Tom, Dave and all of the ICU/Critical care nurses/staff enough for saving our little man, Milo. He was with you for two weeks in the ICU - he was a very, very complex case and had everyone head scratching at Willows and worldwide - Milo was nearly at death's door, but the 24-hour care, love and support helped our boy recover.

"We didn't need to worry about not having Milo at home as we knew Milo was in amazing and excellent hands. He was so loved and looked after by you all. Tom and Dave kept us updated every single day, and we were allowed to see him every day in the ICU. The nurses in the ICU/Critical care were absolutely amazing, and Milo loved you all. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for never giving up and fighting for our little man, and the research you have from Milo can help someone else's pet and family in their recovery.

"Another thank you to the reception/admin/finance team, who were also supportive and kind. Everyone at Willows is amazing and one of a kind. It's been a long, emotional, and hard journey, but everyone was on our side all the way. We cannot recommend this hospital enough. Nothing is ever too much, and they really do love and care for your animals and their owners as well.

"Thank you again for saving our baby boy. Lots of love, Bradley, Gemma and Milo."

Thank you for these kind words, and we wish Milo all the best!

Say hello to Bailey, a playful six-month-old puppy who sadly broke her forearm. 🐶

Bailey had a small fall and unfortunately landed awkwardly and broke her left radius and ulna. These are common fractures in small dogs and can be prone to poor healing, especially when treated inappropriately with casts or splints.

Bailey was referred to Willows and seen by Orthopaedic Surgeons Toby Gemmill and Eugenio Gaudio. An operation was performed to realign the broken bones and stabilise them with a plate and bone screws applied to the radius – stabilisation in this way typically gives excellent outcomes.

She was able to start bearing her weight on the limb the day after surgery, but her exercise will need to be restricted for a few weeks while the bones heal.

Good luck with your recovery, Bailey!

Proudly announcing our partnership with Dogs Home! 🐶🎉

We are excited to kick-off our 35th year celebrations by announcing that we are teaming up with Birmingham Dogs Home (BDH) to help make a difference to the region’s most vulnerable dogs.

Over the last 12 months we have worked closely with the Birmingham Dogs Home veterinary team to provide Specialist support for complex cases, however we were keen to do even more to provide the best possible medical care through the provision of pro-bono work as part of our unique partnership.

As well as providing care for some of their most critically ill dogs, we will be supporting Birmingham Dogs Home in lots of other ways in the coming year.

Birmingham Dogs Home are hosting a fantastic Family Fun Day on Saturday 22nd June at Tudor Grange Park in Solihull. To find out more about the upcoming event, click here >> https://bit.ly/3VMd4wf

Stay tuned for updates on how you can help us support this incredible charity! 💕

Meet Bella, an adorable 15-week-old kitten who unfortunately got her left front leg stuck in a fireguard at home and broke her humerus - the bone between her shoulder and elbow.

Bella was referred to Willows and seen by Orthopaedic Surgeons Toby Gemmill and Eugenio Gaudio. An operation was performed to stabilise the broken bone using 1.5mm screws and a bone plate.

The day after surgery, Bella was immediately able to bear weight on her operated leg and is now recuperating back at home. We're looking forward to seeing her fully healed and recovered in a few weeks.

Good luck, Bella!

03/06/2024

Eight-year-old English Springer Spaniel Maisie was referred to our Internal Medicine team after suffering from diarrhoea, vomiting, reduced appetite and abdominal discomfort.

During a consultation with Internal Medicine Clinician Bryn Jones, an abdominal ultrasound scan was performed, which showed mild thickening of her intestines, and her vitamin B12 was also found to be low.

Maisie's history and findings were consistent with chronic intestinal inflammation, and she was treated with a strict hypoallergenic diet and supplementation of vitamin B12. Since her dietary changes, she has shown great improvement, and we're happy this was enough to reduce her symptoms without the need for any long-term medication.

We wish Maisie well with her ongoing recovery. 🐶💕

"My vet was closed, so I was advised to phone Willows, who saw us within half an hour. All the staff were very friendly, and the vet was amazing with Misty, my very old Border Collie, who had a very upset stomach. I couldn't fault Willows from start to finish." - Sheila Patty and Misty.

We wish Misty all the best for her recovery!

Meet our team this

Say hello to Alexandra Gerard, one of our fantastic Registered Veterinary Nurses. 👋

Alexandra has been part of our team for over a year and a half and describes her role as fast-paced and exciting. She is often the first point of contact for emergency and critical care.

We have supported Alexandra's career progression as she has had the freedom to move from one role to another within the hospital until she found what she felt most passionate about - emergency and critical care.

Alexandra says, "My favourite moment is always when you meet a client during a patient's discharge appointment who is beyond grateful for everything we have achieved for their pet to go home with them."

We're so pleased to have you on the team, Alexandra. 🙌

We're pleased to end the week with this feedback from Andrew Lumb, who recently brought his Cockapoo, Chewie, to our multi-disciplinary Specialist-led referral hospital.

"Unfortunately, we had to bring our Cockapoo, Chewie, into the out-of-hours service as he had an issue with itching and could not sleep. Ana was brilliant with Chewie, and she made him feel comfortable around her, although he was quite distressed. She told us all of the options available to us to treat Chewie, with the pros and cons for all of them with recommendations. She is very knowledgeable and explained everything clearly to us. Also, she called the morning after to check how Chewie was; it was an amazing service. Would definitely recommend."- Andrew and Chewie.

Thank you for the feedback, Andrew. 👏 We wish you and Chewie all the best!

Say hello to Drax, the nine-month-old Doberman whose case of the sniffles turned out to be something rather peculiar! 🤧

Drax was referred to the Willows team with a three-month history of sneezing with nasal discharge and nose bleeds. A diagnosis of nasal aspergillosis (fungal rhinitis, usually caused by a fungal species known as aspergillosis) was made, and treatment was successful.

Drax's Specialist treatment by our Internal Medicine team involved:
🐶 Using forceps via an endoscope to dislodge and remove the fungus
🐶 Flushing saline into the nose
🐶 Suctioning this back
This was followed up with oral medication for four weeks.

Drax's owner was very pleased with his progress and said, "he's a new dog since the procedure," which is music to our ears!

Meet our team this 🎉

Introducing Livia-May Craythorn, one of our wonderful Patient Care Assistants. Livia's role is to maintain veterinary standards for patients while ensuring they have the best stay possible with us and to supply the nurses with the tools they need to carry out their care.

Livia has loved animals since she was a child and wanted a way into the veterinary industry without having to go to university. "Becoming a PCA was the perfect way into it, and I love every minute of it, especially seeing such amazing results and following so many cases through", said Livia.

With a solid foundation of her GCSEs and A-Levels, Livia is next setting her sights on becoming a Student Nurse.

Join us in wishing Livia all the success in her continued career at Willows! 🙌

We're thrilled to end the week with this lovely review from our clients about our Specialist-led Internal Medicine team. With more than 90 years of collective experience, they are experts in diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions.

💬 "I can't thank Mark, the Emergency Care team and all the nurses enough. They are so amazing with Otto and kind to him, even when he is a bit tricky to deal with. Without Mark's care, we wouldn't have Otto now. I know he is in the best hands and getting the best treatment. I trust his judgment completely."

Our team strives to provide outstanding care and service to our patients, clients and referring vets.

Meet lovely Lizzy, a 13-year-old Lurcher. 🐶

Lizzy was referred to Will Robinson, our Head of Soft Tissue Surgery service, for surgical management of an incompletely excised tumour, known as a soft tissue sarcoma.

A CT scan performed by Specialist-led Diagnostic Imaging and Oncology teams did not find any evidence of metastatic spread, so the decision was made to try to achieve local control by removing the previous surgical scar and one of the hamstring muscles that ran underneath the scar, the biceps femoris muscle.

Despite her older age, we felt that surgery offered Lizzy the best chance to minimise the tumour's ability to regrow locally and, therefore, hopefully, provide a cure, so her owner agreed to proceed with surgery.

We are pleased to report that surgery went well, and Lizzy has recovered brilliantly despite missing one of her hamstring muscles. As you can see from the videos, she is using the left hind leg well and is adapting brilliantly.

We have everything crossed that this is the end of her cancer journey, and she can enjoy her golden years in peace.

Say hello to Molly, a Jack Russell Terrier who found herself in a precarious situation after swallowing an entire fishing line, hook included! 🎣

Molly's owners became aware of the ordeal when they noticed a fishing wire protruding from their pet's mouth.

In a swift response, Molly was rushed to Willows as an emergency case last July. Through gastroscopy, our Specialist-led Internal Medicine team identified the foreign material - a hook with the line. Our expert team then adeptly removed the line and sharp hook endoscopically using specialised equipment, ensuring Molly's safety without causing any additional harm.

A thorough inspection was undertaken after removal, and thankfully no remnants of foreign material were found in Molly's stomach. Molly is now recovering well, much to the relief of her owners and our team.

Welcome back, Toby! 👋

We are pleased to announce that Toby Gemmill FRCVS has re-joined Willows' Specialist-led Orthopaedic team.

Toby, an RCVS and ECVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, first joined Willows in 2005 as an Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon. He became Clinical Director in 2016 and then Managing Director in 2020, and has now decided to return to his clinical roots in Orthopaedics.

Toby said: "It has been a genuine privilege to have had the opportunity to work with some outstanding individuals and teams during my time as Clinical Director and Managing Director. However, as the MD role expanded it became increasingly challenging to balance leadership with clinical interests. This has prompted the decision to switch my focus back to clinical Orthopaedics, and I am super pleased to be re-joining the Willows team."

We're thrilled to have you back on board, Toby! 👏

Did you know May is ?

Over the next few weeks, we'll be shining a light on our brilliant nursing team members here at Willows! 🥳

First up, meet Tarnia Jordan, a Registered Veterinary Nurse who has been with us for eight months. Tarnia is completing her fear-free certification and is currently undergoing her BVNA (The British Veterinary Nursing Association) oral care nursing certificate. She is multidisciplinary in her practice and has interests in Emergency and Critical Care and patient care.

A standout moment in Tarnia's career was providing inpatient care to a 10-week-old Border Collie puppy who had kennel cough, giardia, lethargy, hypothermia, campylobacter and secondary pneumonia. His prognosis was poor; however, after one-to-one care for three days, including syringe feeding, he pulled through despite all the odds.

"After creating a bond, I decided to rehome him and give him a second chance at life. Now he is thriving, and success stories like this fulfil my purpose of being a veterinary nurse and making a difference in the veterinary community," said Tarnia.

We wish Tarnia all the best in continuing her flourishing career here at Willows. 🙌

👋 Today, we are thrilled to introduce you to Annie Mulligan.

Annie joined our team in 2023 as a Rotating Intern, aiming to enhance her skills as a versatile clinician. During her Rotating Internship, Annie had the opportunity to experience all the services offered at our multidisciplinary referral hospital while progressing as a Veterinary Surgeon.

Throughout her Rotating Internship, Annie's interest in Anaesthesia and Analgesia flourished, leading her to embark on a residency with us.

In February, Annie became a Resident in Anaesthesia and Analgesia, focusing on perioperative evaluations, allowing her to develop individualised anaesthetic and analgesia plans for each patient.

This role involves collaborating with clinicians from various disciplines from across our multidisciplinary hospital, understanding their clinical conditions, and managing the associated risks and complications of procedures.

We are truly proud of Annie's professional journey with us. She aspires to complete her credentials, qualify for board-certified examinations, and hopes to achieve European Diplomat status in Anaesthesia and Analgesia.

We are excited to watch your progress and development with us, Annie! 🎉

🐶🐶Meet the dynamic duo, Norman and Bruno, two beautiful Dachshund puppies who were referred to our Internal Medicine team due to concerns of lethargy, poor weight gain, vomiting, and mild neurological symptoms.

After both puppies underwent a CT scan, they were diagnosed with a congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt. These shunts are abnormal blood vessels that bypass the liver, causing a buildup of toxins in the bloodstream. 🩸 If left untreated, this condition can result in symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, and neurological issues, including seizures.

Following their diagnosis, Norman and Bruno were transferred to our Soft Tissue Service under the care of Erika Villedieu, Specialist in Soft Tissue Surgery. They each underwent surgery a week apart to address the portosystemic shunt. During the procedure, the shunting vessel was isolated, and a determination was made on whether it could be fully closed.

For dogs unable to tolerate complete closure, a device is placed around the vessel to allow gradual closure over time. This approach was taken for both Bruno and Norman, involving a collaborative effort between our Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Anesthesia, Imaging, and Critical Care teams. 🏥

Norman and Bruno will receive medication for the next couple of months, and a blood test will be conducted to track their improvements. The goal is for the shunting vessel to close fully within 6-8 weeks.

Typically, dogs who undergo this procedure can enjoy a regular life in the future, although some may require continued medication.

We send our best wishes to Bruno and Norman for a healthy and happy life ahead! 💗🐶🐶

Friday!

Thank you, Debbie, a proud pet owner who has shared her experience with our world-leading Specialist-led Orthopaedic team. It's certainly made our day!

"Ace’s wound was neat and tidy, and he was weight-bearing on the leg the next day. His 8-week X-ray showed that everything is good, and now we need to build his fitness back. Thanks to all involved with Ace at the Willows, but special thanks to Eugene and Alexis." - Debbie, pet owner.

Thalula is a 13-year-old Chihuahua who was referred to us for treatment of severe dental disease. 🦷

Unfortunately, toy breed dogs such as Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers are predisposed to dental disease, with a large proportion of them having an element of dental disease by the age of two.

Thalula had also been recently diagnosed with a heart condition and arrhythmia by our Cardiology team and was receiving appropriate medical treatment, which added a degree of risk to the general anaesthetic for the required dental treatment due to her age.

On the day of the procedure, Thalula was assessed by both our Cardiology and Anaesthesia teams to make sure she would be as safe as possible under anaesthetic. Once anaesthetised, Thalula underwent a professional dental cleaning.

Following this, a detailed oral examination was performed, and a full set of dental X-rays were taken. Thalula had 15 missing teeth, and unfortunately, her remaining teeth had end-stage gum disease. The decision was made to extract Thalula’s remaining teeth, which accounted for 27 extractions. With the help of both our Specialist-led Cardiology and Anaesthesia team, Thalula’s procedure ran smoothly, and she recovered well. ❤
