Meet Woodrow!

Woodrow is a 6 month old Border Collie who has recently been neutered. 🐾

🐑 Border Collies were originally bred for herding sheep due to their stamina and intelligence. 🐑

However, they are also brilliant candidates for a sport known as Flyball. ⚽

During Flyball, a tennis ball is catapulted from a special machine and it is up to the dogs to catch the ball and take back to their handlers as quickly as possible. The fastest dog is the winner! 🏆

Meet Becky & her 4 new arrivals!

Unfortunately, Becky needed an emergency cesarean when she struggled to give birth on her own.

A few hours later she had 4 bundles of fun next to her! 🐾

The nurses enjoyed taking care of the little ones while Becky woke up from her anaesthetic.
The puppies were slowly syringe fed with a special puppy milk and then their bottoms were stimulated with warmed dampened cotton wool to help them to go to the toilet.

Once Becky was awake she was reunited with her little ones for their first proper feed.

We wish Becky the best of luck with her motherhood journey! 🐾

Meet Alexis!

Alexis is a 3 year old Maine C**n who recently had a heart scan with our vet, Edgar.

❤️❤️Why do animals have heart scans?❤️❤️

💕 Heart scans help to determine whether the heart is working correctly. They are usually advised if your pet is found to have a heart murmur (abnormal sounding heart beat when listened to with a stethoscope).

❤️❤️ What happens during a heart scan? ❤️❤️

💕 Your pet will have the fur from their chest area shaved. This is to enable the ultrasound scanner to work properly. The skin will be cleaned, and then ultrasound gel will be applied to the area. The ultrasound scanner is then used to take a good look at the structure of the heart and blood flow in/out.

❤️❤️ How long does a heart scan take? ❤️❤️

💕 Your pet will need to be dropped off in the morning (starved), and collected in the afternoon/evening. A heart scan can take anywhere between half an hour to 2 hours. In some cases, your pet may need to be sedated in order to keep them calm and still, which is why we advise your pet to be starved.

❤️ What happens if your pets heart isn't working correctly? ❤️

💕 There are a range of medications available to help with many issues regarding the heart, which your vet will discuss with you. If medication isn't needed you may be advised to monitor your pet and have repeat heart scans at regular intervals to check for any changes.

❤️❤️ What symptoms should you look out for? ❤️❤️

Please make an appointment with your vet if your pet has any of the following symptoms:

💕 Sudden exercise intolerance (not wanting to go for a walk/only being able to walk or play for a short period of time)
💕 Panting (or breathing with their mouth open)
💕 Coughing
💕 Fainting/collapsing
💕 A swollen belly
💕 Picky appetite

This is Belle!

Belle has recently been spayed, otherwise known as neutering.

Belle had a small umbilical hernia which was also corrected whilst she was under anaesthetic. 🐾

What is an umbilical hernia?

An umbilical hernia occurs when the umbilical cord dries up and falls off and leaves a small hole in the abdominal wall. Usually this hole would heal completely, leaving a tiny belly button. However, when a puppy has an umbilical hernia this area fails to completely close. 🐶

Belle was also seen as a puppy to complete her vaccination course, check out the comments for her puppy pic! 🐕

Happy National Hamster Day 🐹

Hamsters are small rodents and are very popular pets in the UK.

They come in a wide variety of colours, shapes, sizes and personalities. There are 5 common types of hamster, 3 of which are classed as ‘dwarf’ hamsters.

Syrian hamsters
• Size: 15-17cm
• Lifespan: 2-3 years

Chinese hamsters
• Size: 10cm
• Lifespan: 2-3 years

The 3 types of dwarf hamsters:

Campbell’s
• Size: 10cm
• Lifespan: 1.5-2 years

Winter White
• Size: 8-10cm
• Lifespan: 1.5-2 years

Roborovski
• Size: 5cm
• Lifespan: 3-3.5 years

What does a hamster need? 🐹

* A large spacious cage (ideally the biggest you can afford) with plenty of hamster safe bedding for burrowing.

* Enrichment - As they are rodents, they need toys to chew on to keep their teeth trim. They enjoy burrowing so tunnels are ideal toys.

* Fresh water daily and hamster specific food. This can be scatter fed on the top of the cage to encourage natural gathering behaviour.

Parasites not only transmit diseases to pets, but can also be responsible for illness in humans.

Therefore it is a vital part of responsible pet ownership to ensure you have an ongoing preventative care plan put in place to provide protection against pesky parasites.

Please ask about our Pet Health Club for details on how we can help you to protect your pet and also save money on parasite treatments. 🐾

Little Buddy the 5 year old Chihuahua has undergone dental surgery this week.

Unfortunately, underneath the plaque and tartar his teeth were very wobbly. He ended up needing a whopping 11 teeth out!

🦷 Dental Care Tips🦷

🪥 If possible, you can brush your dogs teeth using pet safe toothpaste. Start off small by allowing your dog to lick the toothpaste from your finger, then from the toothbrush itself. Build it up gradually until your dog is comfortable with the toothbrush before attempting to put it in their mouth.

🪥 Plaque Off - This is a powder that you can add to food daily. It helps to prevent further plaque building up on the teeth.

Some dogs can be nervous of the scales and coming into the vets, so getting them used to it from a young age is really important. 🐾

Meet Junior!

Junior has recently been neutered under the Cats Protection Neutering Scheme. This particular scheme offers help with the cost of neutering for owners on low income (provided with a voucher).

⚠️ However, there have been some recent changes to this scheme which means that only 3 vouchers can be used per household. ⚠️

Please bear this in mind if your cat is booked in for neutering under this scheme.
