Did you know, so many people underestimate the challenges of adolescence.
Adolescence is a life stage that every dog will go through. It often hits around 6 months and can go on until up to 3 years of age, depending on the dog you have.
Unfortunately, adolescence is often the time that a lot of dogs will get re-homed due to their challenging behaviours.
Don't get caught out with your soon to be teenager. Seek help before it gets too challenging

Lenny has been showing aggression to his humans when being told what to do.
Unfortunately they went to see another local trainer who told them to intimidate him. This worked for 3 days before his aggression escalated. Funnily enough, meeting aggression with aggression doesn't work 🙄😳
So how did we start to see a happier dog after only one session?
We looked at meeting his needs better. He was a bored and frustrated working dog. We asked him to do things rather than demanded and rewarded him when he did so. This immediately took away the conflict and building tension between the two.
Please think twice before using aversive methods. If you treat dogs with respect, understanding and kindness, that goes a long way

The #1 Reason Your Dog Is Hard to Control? Lack of Impulse Control!
Dogs aren’t born knowing how to resist temptation—they naturally chase, grab, and react in the moment. Without impulse control, you might find yourself dealing with constant pulling, jumping up, barking, or stealing food.
The good news? Impulse control can be taught! With the right training, your dog can learn to pause, think, and make better choices, making life easier for both of you.
If your dog struggles with self-control, I can help! Get in touch today to start transforming your dog’s behaviour.

How to Teach Your Puppy to Settle Anywhere
Wouldn’t it be great if your puppy could relax calmly at home, in a café, or even at the park? Teaching your puppy to settle is an essential life skill that helps them learn to switch off, no matter where they are.
Here’s how to teach it:
1️⃣ Daily Practice is Key – The more you practice, the easier it becomes! Settle training should be part of your puppy’s daily routine, even for just a few minutes at a time.
2️⃣ Start at Home – Use “benching” by having your puppy settle on a bed or mat near you while you watch TV or work.Have them on a lead, attached to a fixed object. Reward calm behavior with gentle praise or a chew.
3️⃣ Do Nothing = Earn Something – Before letting your puppy play, train, or go for a walk, wait for a moment of calm. If they settle, then reward them by allowing them to do something fun! This teaches them that calmness gets them what they want.
4️⃣ Tire Them Out First – A mentally and physically stimulated puppy will find settling much easier. Make sure their needs are met with appropriate exercise, enrichment, and training before expecting them to relax.
5️⃣ Add Distractions Gradually – Once they can settle at home, practice in new environments like the garden, a friend’s house, or a quiet café. Start with low-distraction areas before progressing to busier places.
6️⃣ Be Patient & Stay Consistent – Puppies are naturally energetic, so learning to relax takes time. Reward small moments of calm and gradually build up the duration.
A well-settled puppy grows into a well-mannered dog. Keep practicing every day, and soon your puppy will be able to relax anywhere!

I bet you didn't think this was a puppy class? Where's the classroom? Here at Paws Intuition, we do things differently. You see, puppy training isn't just about having a dog that can sit and lay down and socialisation isn't just about your dog playing with other dogs. In fact, thats where so many people get it wrong. Socialisation is exposure. Exposure to life and everything in it, whilst building positive associations around those things. Socialisation should only include a very small amount of play and interaction.
So if you want the puppy of your dreams, firstly, hit the follow button, secondly, drop us a message and thirdly, if you're local to Birmingham, join puppy club.

"Having a well-behaved dog doesn’t happen by magic – it takes time, patience, and consistent effort, especially through the first two years of puppyhood and adolescence.
Murphy is a shining example of what dedication and force-free training can achieve. As a young puppy, Murphy was incredibly reactive around people and wouldn’t come near me for the first six weeks of puppy class. He was scared of life and overwhelmed by the world around him. But with regular training, socialisation afternoons, and plenty of kindness, he is now starting to thrive. At just 5.5 months old, he’s already come such a long way, building confidence and learning essential skills for the future.
Training is a journey, not a quick fix – but the results are always worth it. If you're ready to start creating a confident, well-mannered companion, let’s work together to give your puppy the best start in life!

How to Help Your Puppy Stay Calm Around Other Dogs
Teaching your puppy to stay calm when meeting other dogs is an essential skill for building polite, well-rounded social habits. Here are some tips to help you:
🐾 Choose the Right Friend:
Find a calm, tolerant dog to practice with—ideally, an older dog who won’t match or encourage your puppy’s excitable energy. Larger, older dogs are often more patient and less likely to feed into your puppy’s natural excitement.
🐾 Start from a Distance:
Begin by observing the other dog from a comfortable distance where your puppy can notice them without becoming too excited. Reward any calm behavior, such as sitting, lying down, or simply glancing at the other dog.
🐾 Reward Focus on You:
Each time your puppy looks at you instead of the other dog, reward them with a treat or praise. This helps teach them that focusing on you is more rewarding than fixating on the other dog.
🐾 Keep Greetings Brief and Controlled:
If the dogs do meet, keep the interaction short and positive. Watch closely for signs of overstimulation, and intervene if your puppy becomes too excitable.
🐾 End on a Positive Note:
Wrap up with calm behavior. A short, successful interaction is far more valuable than allowing things to escalate. Always reward your puppy for staying relaxed.
By setting your puppy up for success, you’ll help them learn to navigate social situations calmly and confidently. Remember, your calm guidance is their best teacher!
