So it’s a weee bit cold today for forest school which means a home day with the boys for me

Hudson is asleep on the sofa and Clay is “working” with me so that we can still get some work done

The dogs have been on a run up the canal this morning with Darren so now they’re enjoying a nice little morning snooze too.

How are you all enjoying the weather?? I kinda like it 🫢❄️❄️

Shock horror!! My dogs are allowed on furniture!

We get this a lot where clients ask us if it’s ok if there dogs are on the furniture? Well in our eyes there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it if you don’t mind it, it’s just a case of mutual manners of being able to say can you get off please and then wanting to oblige with no conflict and likewise you respecting their space if they’re asleep or resting and leaving them be unless you can give warning.

When you have a great relationship there should be no quibbles about getting on or off something and everything is an equally shared resource.

If you’d like to find out more about how to do this then head over to our free group where we post advice and videos on how to live a great life with your dog

Juggling is real!

Darren kindly took this photo when all 4 of us crashed (don’t worry I haven’t had another child lol the tiny baby is my nephew).

Multi dog households or especially puppies can be exhausting! Trying to get on a sleep schedule and toilet training and all the attention they need! Argh it’s tough work!

I see a lot of people going wrong by overstimulating young dogs and giving them too much to do, it would be like keeping a toddler going in a soft play or playing with friends with 20min power naps in between and trust me that is no fun for anyone!

So top tip for today - think about how much rest and chill time you’re actively scheduling in for your young dogs and breaks away from each other with multi dogs

Did you know we have chickens?

5 to be precise and it’s so lovely!

Although with a very high prey driven dog who will kill we’ve had some work to do to make sure he’s not constantly trying to get into the chicken area!

First off we covered our windows in the house where the dogs normally chill as they’re all glass to the garden so those tempting chickens to eat were always in his eye line.

Secondly we only let him out in the garden on lead to ensure he couldn’t reinforce himself by getting to the coop area and keep jumping up at it.

I then did targeted training sessions with him at a distance and on lead that every time he looked at the chickens he got a treat, distance was key here.
We than gradually got closer and closer and I became more interesting because he quickly cottoned on that the chickens were a good thing because every time he looked at them he got a goody. He then was no longer bothered by looking at them because all that adrenaline rush was starting to subside.

We worked up to dropping the lead so that he was “off lead” but if he made a poor choice then I could collect him up and guide him back to treat land.

I’d say this took maybe a week in total and ever since he doesn’t pay much if hardly any attention to them, unless of course I’m taking some yummy treats out for the chickens too 🐾

So if you have a dog that it perhaps reacting to certain triggers, maybe through a window and is barking non stop then look to reduce the visual stimulus so they don’t get to practice as often and have some treats at the ready 🤓

A sleepy Jo.

BUT! Another uni assignment just handed in! So far im tracking distinctions with results day tomorrow for mini dissertation so everything crossed for that.

It’s certainly a lot juggling everything but when you’re passionate about making a big change and a dent in the universe it is all worth it!

Big things are going to happen and the hard work will certainly pay off!

A very big thank you to Dog First Aid Wolverhampton for putting on a wonderful course. It’s such a great feeling to know that we are able to know what to do in an emergency situation either with our own dogs, clients dogs or anyone needing help in public.

We highly recommend Dog First Aid Wolverhampton if you are looking to learn what to do if anything happens.Lynsey is very knowledgeable, the course is broken down into sections so it’s not to much information to take in at once, lots of time for Q+A and very friendly😊🐾

If you could have one resource with all the answers to specifically address your dog training needs/wants and or struggles, what would be in it?

Mine would include how not to chew the Christmas decorations 🤣

Only means one thing…

Yup I’m away on a training course so of course I need to divulge in breakfast! These contraptions always bring back so many memories from years gone by 🤣

I’m curious, what do they mean to you?

When we get stuck!

Yes even the professionals get stuck! This particular case has had me pickling my brains with lots of research around potential neurological issues with aggressive “attacks”. We’ve been making progress but it still wasn’t sitting well with me that we do not have a clear answer yet.

In search of getting a resolution for this lovely family I’ve been drawing on contacts who speacialise in different areas and today I considered an alternative approach on play based so brought in my amazing friend and colleague Canine Connections to support me and get a second pair of eyes.

You see whilst all of us whi work with dogs are pretty darn good at what we do, there are always going to be times where a second set of eyes is needed. I do not personally see this as a weakness but a great opportunity to collaborate and to continue stretching my brain to keep thinking outside the box.

This is also another reason why our programmes are over 3 and 6 months because if in this particular case we had done a consult only, we would be no further along in understanding what is going on and it’s likely this family would keep trainer hopping and getting lots of conflicting advice leaving this poor boy confused like his humans would have been.

I have high hopes for this boys outcome and looking forward to being a part of the continued journey

When you’ve had the absolute joy of working with amazing people and their dogs today!

I want to shout out to our amazing community for how well they support each other, this morning we were able to set up several types of scenario that worked for each dog individually! Yes individually in a group setting! This is so important to set your dog up to succeed. Using each other and each other’s dogs, the dogs we were working came away with so much knowledge and practical application it was just a joy to see all the leaning taking place.

Then another shout out to one of our newest members this afternoon who’ve been working so hard since their kick start session I honestly didn’t recognise the dog this afternoon! He no longer wanted to kill me but work and play with his humans ❤️❤️❤️

It’s been a great day in the mud and the rain surrounded by awesomeness!

Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend

Busy morning so far…

It’s half term so we had a play session with the boys as they wanted to have a lazy day in their PJs. I also have two uni assignments due so I spent an hour working on that whilst Darren continued to play with the boys.

I’ve just completed my first training session of the day with an amazing client and their border collie (watch out for an update on this case) and I’m now off to see two long-standing clients for my next two appointments.

As it’s half term we’re then taking the boys pumpkin picking ❤️

Not a bad way to start the week

Our Story

Paw Education is all about dog behaviour and modification programmes. We set the business up after very quickly realising that owners nowadays want and require ongoing support with their dogs, something that unfortunately doesn't happen too often. Ergo, Paw Education, in other words, we're receiving poor education on our four paws today and this is something we're passionate about changing.

Jo and Darren are a married couple who live and breathe dogs, they own 2 beautiful Siberian Huskies - Axel, the white pup! (even though he's 3 years old now), and Laika, the wiser older sister! Their lives are dedicated to continual learning in the dog behaviour industry, regularly attending courses and have trained with Sarah Whitehead, a well known animal behaviourist in the dog industry. All methods follow one very strict rule - positive reinforcement! No negativity here. Having fun and making learning enjoyable for both owner and pooches alike!
