Weekend round up! Another busy one this weekend lots of the team were out Saturday night to celebrate Lou's hen do! Claire took her young horse Annie to her first BE 100 at Aston and we can safely say she deserved her lie in on Sunday morning! We also welcome back one of our vets Niamh who's been off for a couple of months following a horse related injury. What did you all get up to?

Thursday Trivia!

This week, Abi visited a patient with a sore eye. As with all eye exams, she stained the eye ball with a green stain called fluorscein. After flushing, some of the dye remained on the cornea (the outer surface of the eyeball). Our question is - what are the stained areas showing?

As vets and horse owners we know supplements are a tricky area to navigate with lots of options to choose from. At Wright and Morten we are pleased to offer a range of veterinary grade supplements to ensure your horse is in the best possible health. These can be fed short term for a certain condition or long term for preventative health and our vets are always happy to discuss your horses’ individual requirements.

By choosing a veterinary grade supplement you are making the best possible decision for your horse for the following reasons:
- All the ingredients in our supplements are present at a therapeutic level which has been researched and proven. Feeding sub-therapeutic levels negate any potential positive effect and is a waste of money.
- Studies have shown some supplements have greater than 30% difference between the amount of ingredient listed on the tub and the amount contained in the product. With our supplements there is a guarantee the stated levels are actually contained in the product.
- Our ingredients are of high quality to ensure maximum bio-availability (so the body can absorb and use it!)
- There is a palatability guarantee
- All products tested for naturally occurring prohibited substances and are therefore competition legal.

For more information on our range of supplements or individual products please do not hesitate to contact us or visit https://www.wmequinevets.co.uk/information-sheets

Lets talk Calmers.
There are hundreds on the market but owners often report variable responses and it is often the case what works for one horse doesnt necessarily work for another. So, what competition legal calmers do you use and what improvement do you notice (if any)? And do you use them daily for just for competition use?

As vets we can prescribe medications in the short term to reduce stress and aid relaxation in horses on rest or rehabilitation but these are not licensed for competition use. We do have a veterinary grade competition calmer called EquiMind which contains both L-Tryptohan and Magnesium as research suggests horses most commonly respond to one of these. It is suitable for long term use and for use in horses which compete. Please follow the link to find out more. https://www.wmequinevets.co.uk/information-sheets/supplements

Foaling - Do you know the 3 stages of labour?

1) Uterine contractions begin. This moves the foal through the cervix into the birth canal. The mare will appear restless, and she may lie down or roll. Foetal membranes may be seen at the mare’s v***a. This stage lasts between 1-2 hours, and ends once the foetal membranes break.

2) Delivery of the foal. This usually happens very quickly. If there has been no progress 20 minutes after the membranes have ruptured, call a vet immediately.

3) Expulsion of the foetal membranes. This usually occurs within 2-3 hours. If there has been no progress for over 4 hours, call a vet immediately. Retained foetal membranes can cause serious health issues, such as infection & laminitis.

How quickly did that weekend come and go?! Did you manage to stay cool and have fun with yours horses? Our staff had a busy horsey weekend- Lou and Anna both competed at dressage and came away with wins, Claire had a great day eventing, Daga won an arena event and Lara enjoyed a gridwork clinic. It was certainly a hot one but a lot of fun. We'd love to see what you got up to, please comment below 😎

Some of you may recognise this piece of kit found in all our vets cars! These are HOOF TESTERS.

They are used in lameness cases to test for areas of sensitivity around the foot and as such are vital in all cases of lameness where we are worried the foot is the cause.

Firstly we will test for digital pulses. It is important to remember that all horses have a digital pulse, as the foot needs a blood supply to function. We feel for pulses down the outside of the fetlock where the bundle consisting of a nerve, vein and artery runs. We are feeling for an increase in the pulse to the foot which indicates an increase in the blood supply. This is indicative of an active problem within that foot.

We are wary of feeling for heat in the foot as the hoof wall is thick, and so heat being produced by inflammation is unlikely to be felt. Warm hooves can just be due to the foot being in the sun or buried in the bed in the stable etc.

We will then use the hoof testers and squeeze the sole of the foot to find any areas of pain.

The most common problems associated with the foot are foot abscesses and laminitis.

With the grass coming through quickly at the moment as the weather is continuing to be warm and wet we thought we would spend a bit of time discussing the benefits of grazing muzzles in helping with weight management.

Not only does the lush grass predispose our horses and ponies to putting on weight, it also increases their risk of getting laminitis and EMS. We have several posts from earlier in the year on these topics for you to browse through.

Grazing muzzles can help to reduce the amount of grass consumed by your horse while grazing. They should be used in conjunction with other diet management strategies such as limiting hay/haylage, soaking hay and feeding laminitis friendly, low sugar high fibre feeds.

We are happy to run weight clinics at your yard where one of our vets will come and spend half a day with our potable weigh bridge. Each person attending will receive an information pack and have the opportunity to ask the vet any questions on weight or anything else while they are there. Please contact us on 01260 280800 for more information on these.

Yesterday we hosted our emergencies and first aid course. It was a great interactive couple of hours discussing the role owners can play in emergency situations, dispelling common myths and gaining some hands on experience thanks to our well behaved demo horses Bertie and Ronnie. Thank you to everyone who came, for those who missed out, we will look to run another later in the year. Happy Sunday 😊

Foalings: Do you know the '1 - 2 - 3' rule?

Foalings can be a wonderful but an equally stressful time. Knowing the '1-2-3' rule can ensure problems are picked up early & allows veterinary care to be administered sooner rather than later.

1 - Within 1 hour, the foal should stand.

2- Within 2 hours the foal should suckle.

3- Within 3 hours, the mare should have passed the placenta.

If any part of the 1 - 2 - 3 rule is not satisfied, please give the office a call on 01260 280800.

DID YOU KNOW.....

The risk of gastric ulcers has been linked to the FREQUENCY of exercise a horse undertakes. So a top tip to reduce your horses risk of ulcers is to give them at least 2 days completely off work every week, ideally back to back days. On the non exercise days its advisable to minimise unnecessary contact eg brushing as having days with minimal human contact has also been shown to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers
