Today, on International Blind Dogs Day, we’re celebrating dogs with limited or no vision and sharing our top tips on how to care for them.
🐶 Safety is key
The first priority should be ‘dog proofing’ your home. Remove or cover any furniture that has sharp edges, use stairgates to close off any hazardous areas, and make sure you have no holes in your garden lawn. Keep the layout of your house the same as this will help them navigate, and move things like shoes out of the way.
🐶 Provide familiarity
Make sure their food and water bowls can always be found in the same space. You could even use a fountain water bowl as the sound of the splashing water will make it easier for your dog to locate its bowl.
🐶 Predictability and reassurance
As with any dog, predictability and consistency are so important for their well-being. A few extra considerations and a steady routine can help provide this predictability. Having a bell attached to you so your dog always knows where you are will help to make them feel safe. Using your voice when interacting with your dog, especially before touching them or when someone is approaching, will prevent them from being startled.
🐶 Enrichment, enrichment, enrichment!
Offer your dog plenty of opportunities to problem-solve and play. You can offer them puzzle feeders or enrichment toys such as Kongs on a regular basis. They might need a little support in the beginning, and make sure you don’t make it too difficult for them to dog into.
