From September 26th we welcome Jordan from Mad Hairs Dog Grooming who will be joining the team and working from within Goldie’s. Jordan is a qualified groomer having worked at a busy salon in Bristol for the past 5 1/2 years. Jordan is relocating to Newton Abbot. She really enjoys grooming Snauzers, Handstripping, loves Spaniels and has lots of experience with Doodles. This appointment is for a wash and dry only, no clipping, ideal for breeds such as pugs, labs etc. Your dog will leave squeaky clean and smelling divine. Please drop me a message 😁

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

We are very busy and recommending you try and book either before you leave or at least 4 weeks prior to your desired date. We have June with us at the moment, our first international student who is finishing her cat grooming course and studying her dog grooming qualification. June is originally from Australia but living in Tunisia. When she returns home she will be using her skills to help the street dogs and cats as well as helping to run a shelter for them 😁🥰

At Goldie’s we are always looking at the most environmentally best ways to recycle our waste and this method has just blown me away - not only will we be recycling our cat fur but also helping people who are suffering from illness and allergies caused by cats fur …
A Veterinarian who is collaborating with an international company who is pioneering a new treatment that seeks to make cat allergies a thing of the past. The preparation of this cure requires the allergens present on cat fur to be extracted and used for medical purposes. All our fur will be freezer stored then sent on its journey to help so many people. ♻️♻️😻

Our Tuesday Cat Day was a busy one 😻 we were blessed with grooming Tonka, a Bengal Cat who is proving quite the little supermodel in the Cat Showing World - his handler needed a little help with his coat before his next show weekend - we wish you all the best for the weekend and will be keeping our fingers crossed for you 🤞🤞

At the age of 15 I completed a weeks work experience at the vets and came home with this little lady clementine, she was a little rescue looking for a home. She kick started my interest in cat grooming and I have never looked back 😻

Cat Day Tuesday - This little lady is quite elderly and struggling to groom herself, suffering from various health ailments which all contribute to the condition of her coat and her inability to groom herself. All this was removed with just a comb, she thoroughly enjoyed it and behaved impeccably 😻

We are extremely busy at the moment and finding the amount of phone calls and messages a little overwhelming. Your dogs/cats welfare is our main priority which means that we can’t always answer the phone, plus the barking and dryers on, makes it impossible to hear anything.

I am pleased to welcome Christina to Goldie’s who will be available to answer the phone and take bookings on a Tuesday and Friday between 12 & 2. If you can’t phone during these times, please leave a message and we will ring you back. Alternatively, it is advisable to book ahead when you collect your dog.

Happy New Year !!

The shop will now close on a Monday and will be open Tuesday - Saturday

As of 31st December 2023 all XL Bully’s entering the shop must be muzzled and on a lead. If they are booked in for grooming then an exemption certificate will need to be produced.
