βπππ«π€ππ π«πππ«π’ππ―πβ with me and a blank pistol.
More realistic to the dog. As it is sat it will hear a shot from the pistol. The dog should be drawn to the shot and look for something falling from the sky. In this case a dummy thrown by me. It should mark the dummies landing position and wait for the command to go collect. Once collected it returns to the handler and delivers the retrieve.
During trialing the guns will walk 10-20 yards ahead of the dogs and shoot any flushed game. This exercise tries to replicate this and helps with concentration and focus of the dog. When the dog arrives it should also ignore me.

The dog must remain sat and steady. It watches the flight of the dummy and βmarksβ the landing spot. When given the command the dog will retrieve the dummy to the handler. If this was a game bird, the bird would then be checked to make sure the dog has not damaged the bird.
A dummy launcher is a great tool as it sounds like a shotgun and also achieves a more realistic distance than just throwing a ball. It can also be placed anywhere and operated by remote control.

This dog has not seen the dummy being placed. In this case the dog is sent over the dyke and stopped by the handler on a whistle and looks for direction. The dog is then directed by hand gestures and often by βleftβ, βrightβ or βbackβ or whatever words your dog uses.
A particularly useful skill in trialing but also a very difficult one. This dog makes it look easy π
