Ridings Equine Vets is a 100% mobile dedicated equine veterinary service based on the borders of north, east and west Yorkshire. Fully mobile, all examinations can be performed on your own premises, including lameness workups, minor surgery, and treatments. The practice was started by Jenny Staddon BVSc certAVP(EP) MRCVS who formerly worked at Ledston Equine Clinic, Castleford. Jenny is an experie

nced equine vet having worked in three previous equine only practices. She is a Yorkshire Lass originally from Doncaster and has owned and bred horses for many years. Jennys aims are to provide horse owners with a top quality service for their horses in their own environment.

By a country mile - the most popular was our April Fool's spoof of Sammy being lunged in the arena, so it is clear you share our sense of fun at the practice 🐾.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Success Story- Laminitis and EMS⭐️⭐️⭐️

We like to celebrate the positive outcomes and this is certainly one who has made a fantastic recovery and was a pleasure to care for!

Not every laminitis presents as your typical leaning back, very shuffly pony- sometimes they are harder to diagnose! Vanner owned by Vicky was one such case. In January Vanner, an 11 year old cob was seen by Alex for lameness affecting his right forelimb. Following an exam and x-rays Vanner was diagnosed with laminitis causing some rotation of the pedal bones in his front feet. Vanner had corrective farriery and rest and regular visits with Alex and Mark (Vanners Farrier) working together to get x-rays of his feet and shoe accordingly, his rotation has since corrected and Vicky and Vanner can be found out hacking around the local area again!

Vanner was also checked for cushings and equine metabolic syndrome when he was diagnosed with laminitis, as we often see them in sequelae and it is important to treat any underlying condition to help the laminitis resolve. Vanner was treated with dietary management by reducing the sugars in his diet and soaking his hay. He was also treated with some medication to help get his insulin levels under control and after a year of hard work he has now lost >170kg on the weigh tape and is back in full work!

A big well done to Vicky for all her hard work to get Vanner fit and healthy!

Earlier this year we sent out a survey to all of our clients to see how we are doing with our client service and asked you for feedback on what we are doing well and areas we could improve.

I've put the results together on the webpage along with some of your comments and areas for improvement that we will work on for next year.

I'd like to say a big thank you to the 440 of you that took the time to fill out the survey, we are really committed to improving our practice and without your time and feedback we would not be able to do it, so thank you from the whole team. We have all seen the results and collectively discussed the good, the bad and the ugly.

FESTIVE FLAPJACK BAUBLE RECIPIE

With Christmas just around the corner (scary, isn't it!!), I wanted to share Betsy's favourite Christmas flapjack recipe with you all! These little treats are a great way to include our furry four-legged friends in the festive celebrations. In fact, I used to make these for my mum's horses on Christmas Eve and leave them in their stockings on Christmas morning.

Just like human mince pies and chocolate truffles, these treats are designed to be given in moderation. I recommend no more than one bauble per horse, per day.

Ingredients:
2 large carrots - grated
1 apple - grated
2 tablespoons of oil (vegetable)
1/4 cup molasses
1 cup of oats
1 cup of flour
1 tube of polo mints (optional)

Method:
1. Pre-heat your oven to 180 degrees Celcius
2. Mix the carrots, apple, oil and molasses
3. Once mixed well, add the flour and oats
4. Form the mixture into golf ball-sized balls
5. Place on a tray lined with baking paper
6. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown
7. As soon as they are removed from the oven, press a polo mint into the top
8. Leave to cool

Melanomas... should we just accept that grey horses get them? 🤔 As a practice, we believe not. At a conference I attended recently it was fascinating to hear about the incredible reconstructive surgery being done on some very advanced melanoma cases. However, it also reminded me how important it is for us to educate our owners to find melanomas when there are small and easy to remove. If you have found any suspicious lumps or bumps on your horse or pony recently - perhaps when you've brought them in for the winter, or when clipping - then please do get in touch for us to have a look and make a plan for your horse. This week we are welcoming a lovely little filly called Berry. She came as a surprise from her lovely mum Hattie! Enjoy the video of them both on their first venture outside as mum and foal🐴🐴
