And just as the festivities come to an end, and we still know we have a little bit of winter to go, here is the last in our series of Wellbeing in Winter posts from our supporters and friends.
This one from the inspiring, David Harland, Showjumper and Coach

We are delighted that David Harland has shared his winter wellbeing thoughts with Totleywells, and given the phenomenally successful year that he and his brilliant showjumping family enjoyed in 2024, we think it’s advice worth taking!

"Winter in Scotland brings unique challenges, and my programme during these months is quite different from the rest of the year. With frozen arenas and snow or ice often making regular training and events impossible to plan, flexibility is key. Add in the festive season and school holidays with my children, and it’s a time to shift focus.

Many of my seasoned showjumpers enjoy a well-deserved break during the winter months. They head off on holiday and won’t return to work until the season is almost upon us again. This downtime allows me to concentrate on the younger horses. It’s the perfect opportunity to get them out and about, introduce them to new experiences, and decide which ones we’ll keep for the future.

Winter is also the time to tackle all those yard jobs that get put off during the busier months. From maintenance around the yard to giving the lorries some much-needed attention, we make good use of the quieter period.

Most importantly, winter is a time to change the pace of life. Taking a proper break allows us to come back refreshed and ready to tackle the new season with energy and focus. Your mindset is one of the biggest factors influencing your riding. If you’re not feeling motivated, forcing yourself into the saddle doesn’t help. The same applies to horses—they sense when you’re not fully engaged.

My advice is to strike a balance. Do just enough to keep yourself and your horses from getting bored and maintain a base level of fitness and condition. It’s far easier to lose fitness than to build it again, so keep ticking over, but don’t push yourself unnecessarily.

Winter might feel like a lull, but it’s a vital part of the rhythm of the year. Embrace the slower pace, enjoy the holidays, and use the time wisely—it sets the stage for success in the months ahead."

David runs regular clinics at Totleywells, message Caroline Timmins to get booked in! Good luck for a brilliant 2025 David, Caroline, Sophie and Aimee from all at

NEW YEAR WELLBEING thoughts from BD Dressage Judge Liz Love Equestrian - Liz is a brilliant coach and judge who has a deep understanding of the horse's way of going and advocates listening to you horse to optimise experience for both horse and rider. We asked Liz for her thoughts on our series focusing on Wellbeing in Winter, and we love her perspective.

There have been so many brilliant ideas before me, but I would reiterate:

1. Allow Time.
Winter is the time to plan ahead and set goals for the New Year, but not at the expense of your horse, and chasing the next competition date to perfect those movements seldom pays off.

2. Take a Break
Both you and your horse need time to refresh your mind and body by doing different activities, a change of scenery, more hacking out, fun time over different terrains to strengthen the joints (yours as well!) Chill.

3. Listen to your horse
Is he trying to tell you something is uncomfortable when you’re trying new movements? This will show in his contact, lack of suppleness over the back and around your inside leg and ease of
the movements. Give him time. Could you do the lotus position in one try?

4. Exercise your body, even in winter
Keeping yourself supple and strong will help your horse. Riding without stirrups is a necessary evil but there are lots of floor exercises you can do too.

5. Be kind to yourself
The stress we put ourselves under shows in different ways – forgetting the test even with a caller is one of them! It’s ok to have a bad day. Being prepared will help – by the week, day,
night before, riding in and the actual test – the horse doesn’t know it’s a test, but he can feel your anxiety.

6. Remember it’s FUN!
Go and enjoy your horse, have a very Happy New Year, may your scores be ever higher!!

Thank you Liz, we look forward to your next visit to Totleywells!
