Meet Nala and Benji 🐾

Beth and Josh contacted us for help, as life was a little difficult with the issues both dogs were displaying . Their issues included:

- Nala resource guarding
- Leash pulling
- Both dogs fighting in the home
- Reactivity towards other dogs
- Reactive to noises from outside (including the doorbell)
- Benji lack of recall due to prey drive

We are proud to say that with our help, and Beth and Josh's hard work...these issues have been resolved!

Both dogs were very responsive to training, which meant that in the grand scheme of things they actually had a fast turn around!

Below is a video of the reactive behaviour we helped them with 🐾

We are saddened to hear the news of the sudden passing of Dumbo, one of our family dogs πŸ’”

Mandy rescued Dumbo nearly a decade ago, and although he lived a happy life, we all wish he had more time with us 🐾

We looked after Dumbo for 2 weeks while Mandy went on holiday. Within that time we took him camping with Rosie.

Here's a little video of them playing πŸ’–

Aggression is not a behaviour you should tackle alone. If your dog displays aggression you should get professional help, because if you get it wrong...bites can have consequences 🐾

Please share! 🚨🐾
Meet Archie!

Archie has been in the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter since August and has not recieved a single application 😭

He's a lovely boy with a lot of love to give!

He's 8 years old, but please do not let that put you off him! I would have him in a heartbeat, but I have Rosie, and Archie is looking for a home where he can be the only dog.

Please do not be put off adopting a sight hound!

Many people think they need a lot of exercise, however most of them are happy with 1or 2 walks a day (depending on their energy levels and age) as long as they get a nice run! They run fast, but enjoy lieing on a soft bed all day napping 😴

Think about giving a dog a forever home this Christmas πŸŽ„

Here is a link for Archie's profile. Please Read before applying.

As for the other animal we’d like to highlight on national adoption day, meet Archie, an 8 year old lurcher who has been with us since August.

Despite a couple of appeals now, Archie still somehow hasn’t had a single application form ☹.

We think this is because lurchers and greyhounds tend to be misunderstood. People tend to see these dogs as ones with boundless energy and ones that need constant exercise. When in reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth! Greyhounds and Lurchers are more than happy to snooze on the sofa for hours at a time and don’t require as much exercise as other breeds.

This doesn’t mean that they don’t enjoy adventures, they are also more than happy to go on longer walks, but it just means that they are relatively low maintenance.

Archie himself is a very affectionate boy who charms everybody he meets, we’re sure there’ll be some people in the comments who can vouch for him!

If you’re considering rescuing a dog, we urge you to consider Archie.

Read more and apply today here: https://buff.ly/4fCtkHB

Once again, if you’re not interested in adopting Archie, you can still do your bit by sharing this post so as many people see him as possible!

The Terrible 'Teens' 🚨

We often come across owners who have just about come to their wits end due to their dog's behaviour !

' They were great when they were a puppy ', is something we hear from around 90% of owners who have raised a dog from puppy hood. 🐢

The truth is, adolesce is hard. It can start as early as 6 months, and even the best trained puppies can turn into dogs who no longer listen and fall into problem behaviours.

This is not the time to take the training wheels off! And it certainly is not the time to sit back because the dog has worn you out. 😴

You must put as much effort into your dog's training in adolesce as you did puppy hood. You need to adjust it a little , but you still need to put effort in.

Putting effort in now will ensure certain behaviours do not get out of hand in the future πŸΎπŸ’™

Safety Tip | Please Read 🚨 β˜ƒοΈ

We are approaching the most wonderful time of the year, which means many shops bring out these Christmas themed treats. Many people buy these not realising the harm they pose on their beloved pet 🐾

Although these treats look harmless and may be enjoyed by your dog, they are not worth the damage that is caused on their health and wellbeing.

There have been documented cases of dogs with pieces of rawhide lodged in their windpipe, stomach, or intestines, creating choking hazards and an intestinal blockage, gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting or diarrhea, can occur if rawhide irritates the digestive tract . Since rawhide is a byproduct of leather, some items pose a significant challenge to a dog’s digestive system when it comes to breaking down.

During the manufacturing process, rawhide is often soaked in a cocktail of chemicals to preserve it and enhance its flavor. These chemicals can include formaldehyde or chromium salts, hydrogen peroxide and bleach, which poses risks to adult dogs and young puppies alike.

Now we know Christmas themed treats look nice, but realisically...your dog would much rather have a piece of chicken or fish, and they are significantly healthier for them than these rawhide treats!

Do what is right for your dog by acting in their best interests. Ditch rawhide treats this Christmas πŸŽ„

We've had a large amount of enquiries lately and our website has let us know that lots of people have not seen our reply.

Here we have Skye, who as you can see was quite reactive at the sound of someone entering the front garden. That window blind in the first video had been replaced a few times πŸ™ˆ

Skye was also reactive towards people knocking at the door or entering the home. Part of the problem was that she would become overwhelmed, over excited, and over stimulated. As a result she would jump on people and bark repeatedly as they entered the home.

In our sessions, we used a leash to direct Skye and teach her good manners. As time goes by we can remove the leash, but it is a great way to communicate with our dogs in the early stages of training.

We also desensitised Skye to knocking sounds so that she would not feel the need to bark at the door constantly.

Well done to Skye's family for putting in the hard work! Our dog's can be difficult at times, but through consistency and the right training, we will help our dog's out of behaviours that may be unsettling or undesirable.

Remember, Remember, the 5th of November πŸŽ†πŸŽ‡

The weeks before and after Bomfire night are the busiest time of the year for lost dogs. This is because many dogs will go into ' flight' mode when they hear an unexpected bang.

Here are some simple tips to keep your dog safe!

Happy Birthday to Rosie! She's 5 years old today πŸ’™

Rosie is a helper dog here at Distinctive K9. She helps dogs who struggle with interactions and helps to build our client's confidence 🐾

Rosie is a rescue dog...which means we will be celebrating her ' gottcha day'in January too 😊

I often ask our clients if their dogs are allowed on the sofa. I'd say 9 out of 10 clients look at me all ashamed and whisper ' yes' πŸ˜…

It's totally OK to allow your dog on your sofa...as long as they are well behaved, well mannered and polite!

As you can see here...my dog, Rosie, is a little sofa bug! πŸ› 🐾

Carol contacted us as Maggie was extremely reactive when she saw other dogs...even if they were quite some distance away!

Maggie was also reactive to people and children. This made walks difficult and something neither Carol or Steve looked forward to.

It's important to note here that reactivity in small dogs is just as important to fix as it is in large dogs. 🐾

A small dog may not be strong enough to pull you over...but they are feeling stressed / anxious/ overwhelmed all the same .

We worked on some basic manners, leash work and thresholds to ensure Maggie felt better about seeing people, children and other dogs while on a walk.

Massive well done to Carol and Steve for putting in the hard work! Maggie came along brilliantly with the issues we faced in our sessions. 🐢
