Who doesn't love a cuddly, plump cat? In truth though, it is unfair of us to allow our much loved pets to be overweight, it impacts their health and vet bills impact your wallet.
There are some good tips here for owners to use at home and if you'd like further advice book a nurse appt with Dani RVN for a weight check up.
Here are my top tips for preventing obesity in cats❤️🐈⬛👇
🐱Feed a complete and balanced diet to you kitten or cat and follow the feeding instructions. Estimating food portions will likely lead to overfeeding.
🐱Feed according to your cat’s life stage and lifestyle eg, an indoor only mature cat will need less calories than a young adult with outdoor access. Neutered cats also need less calories, but kittens still have specific nutrient requirements for growth - if you are not sure, speak to your veterinary team.
🐱Feeding ad lib can lead to overeating. Not all cats can regulate their food intake - especially in multi-cat households where they compete over access to food. Instead, feed several meals (eg, 5) over a 24 hour period and try using microchip and/or timed feeders.
🐱Wet food is generally less calorific than dry and comes in pre-measured packets, making it easier to control portion sizes. Try introducing wet food into your cat's diet as that could make it easier for you to keep track of what they eat.
🐱Monitor your kitten’s weight and body condition as they grow and follow the advice of your veterinary team. Vets and VNs (veterinary nurses) might use a kitten growth chart and perform a body condition score to assess your cat’s weight and shape.

🐱Treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat’s diet. Whilst tasty for your cat, most are treats quite calorific, so be mindful of how many you give.
🐱 Avoid feeding human food, which is calorie-dense and can be high in salt. Behaviours such as meowing, rubbing on our legs when you are eating it doesn’t mean your cat is hungry, this is a learned behaviour!
🐱Feed cats separately (out of sight of each other). This can help prevent them from bolting their own food and eating each other's food.
😻Make mealtimes interesting by puzzle feeding, this helps prevent your cat eating too quickly and provides mental and physical stimulation. Visit 👉 http://foodpuzzlesforcats.com/ for more information.
😺 Schedule daily interactive play sessions for your cat - wand toys are excellent for increasing your cat's activity and lots of fun - even just 5 minutes a day can make a difference!
