Antifreeze spills and leaky engines are a lethal threat to our pets. Ethylene glycol, the main ingredient in antifreeze, is extremely toxic. Unfortunately, it is naturally sweet, which is why pets are tempted to drink it. As the weather continues to drop colder, please be extremely cautious of spills and leaks ❄️

Ethylene glycol is also found in car screen wash, brake fluid, radiator fluid and some garden water features. Even small amounts, if swallowed, is deadly as it causes permanent damage to the kidneys.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning in dogs and cats:
- Wobbliness and weakness
- Vomiting
- Low energy (lethargy)
- Drinking and weeing more to begin, and then less than normal
- Difficulty breathing or fast breathing
- Seizures (fits)
- Collapse

Sadly, antifreeze poisoning is usually fatal unless it’s treated extremely quickly. Call your vet immediately if you think your pet has come into contact with antifreeze - don't wait for symptoms to appear!⚠️

Pumpkins are not good for many wildlife, can be fatal to hedgehogs. Please dispose of correctly and if you see them on the ground outside please pick them up 🎃 🦔 🙏🏼

Who doesn't love a cuddly, plump cat? In truth though, it is unfair of us to allow our much loved pets to be overweight, it impacts their health and vet bills impact your wallet.
There are some good tips here for owners to use at home and if you'd like further advice book a nurse appt with Dani RVN for a weight check up.

Here are my top tips for preventing obesity in cats❤️🐈‍⬛👇

🐱Feed a complete and balanced diet to you kitten or cat and follow the feeding instructions. Estimating food portions will likely lead to overfeeding.

🐱Feed according to your cat’s life stage and lifestyle eg, an indoor only mature cat will need less calories than a young adult with outdoor access. Neutered cats also need less calories, but kittens still have specific nutrient requirements for growth - if you are not sure, speak to your veterinary team.

🐱Feeding ad lib can lead to overeating. Not all cats can regulate their food intake - especially in multi-cat households where they compete over access to food. Instead, feed several meals (eg, 5) over a 24 hour period and try using microchip and/or timed feeders.

🐱Wet food is generally less calorific than dry and comes in pre-measured packets, making it easier to control portion sizes. Try introducing wet food into your cat's diet as that could make it easier for you to keep track of what they eat.

🐱Monitor your kitten’s weight and body condition as they grow and follow the advice of your veterinary team. Vets and VNs (veterinary nurses) might use a kitten growth chart and perform a body condition score to assess your cat’s weight and shape.

📝🐈‍⬛Body condition scores are straightforward to do – check out this video which shows you how to perform a body condition score at home 👇 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fwu8HQliLC8

🐱Treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat’s diet. Whilst tasty for your cat, most are treats quite calorific, so be mindful of how many you give.

🐱 Avoid feeding human food, which is calorie-dense and can be high in salt. Behaviours such as meowing, rubbing on our legs when you are eating it doesn’t mean your cat is hungry, this is a learned behaviour!

🐱Feed cats separately (out of sight of each other). This can help prevent them from bolting their own food and eating each other's food.

😻Make mealtimes interesting by puzzle feeding, this helps prevent your cat eating too quickly and provides mental and physical stimulation. Visit 👉 http://foodpuzzlesforcats.com/ for more information.

😺 Schedule daily interactive play sessions for your cat - wand toys are excellent for increasing your cat's activity and lots of fun - even just 5 minutes a day can make a difference!

NOW ONLY 3 WEEKS, NOT FOUR!
If any of our clients still haven't had their cats micro-chipped, please make a nurse appointment on 01914561087. Special price of £10.00 between now and the June 10th deadline.

Only one month to go❗️ From 10 June 2024, cats in England will need to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old.

🧑‍⚕️ Be sure to contact your vet to book in an appointment.

Microchipping will help reunite you with your cat if they ever become lost. Even indoor-only cats should be microchipped because they are also at risk of becoming lost.

Owners could face a fine of up to £500 if they do not microchip their cat by the required deadline.

More about microchipping in England and the rest of the UK 👉 https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-cat-microchipped

You can find out more about microchipping on our website 👉 https://icatcare.org/advice/microchipping/

Never give your cat paracetamol!

It is highly toxic to them and is easily fatal if they are not given treatment and an antidote extremely quickly.

After my post a couple of days ago about prescribing rule changes for vets, there has been quite a bit discussion on my pages about paracetamol use in pets and it made me nervous!

This medication can be used safely and legally in dogs and rabbits, provided it has been prescribed by a vet, but it can never be given to cats.

You should never give a human medication to a pet without speaking to your vet and remember that now in the U.K. they will only be able to advise you if they issue a prescription or the medication directly and it is against the law for you to purchase a human medicine with the intention of giving it to a pet without a veterinary prescription.

It is different in other parts of the world but the advice about speaking to a vet still stands!

But please remember, no paracetamol for cats!

Our page took a backseat during the last few challenging months.
One bright spot during that time was the arrival of locum RVN Dani McHugh at the end of November. Dani has proven to be a popular, hard working addition to the team and we are delighted to say that earlier this month she accepted the role as Westoe's Head Nurse.
Dani's personality, experience and enthusiasm, particularly for nurse consultations, is proving popular with clients and she has plans to further develop these. She has also remarked on how lovely our clients are (very true)!
