On Tuesday this week, we saw Pippa the miniature schnauzer and Bella the whippet X at the practice both presenting with different symptoms.
They’re both female and 12 years old.
Pippa was lethargic and not eating.
Bella was PU (Polyuria- excessive urination) and PD (Polydipsia- excessive thirst/water intake).
After admitting both of them for an ultrasound scan, it was found they both had fluid filling their uterus’ and both suffering from a condition called ‘Pyometra’ which is a very serious infection when the uterus fills with pus.
They both had emergency surgery to remove their uterus’ and are now both recovering well from surgery!
Symptoms of Pyometra:
• loss of appetite
• lethargic
• excessive thirst
• unwillingness to move
•discharge from v***a (but not in closed pyo cases)
Both their owners fast action helped saved their lives and the girls were so well behaved and loved their dinner after surgery! Their families wanted us to share their story for educational purposes about the condition.
Spaying can prevent your female dog developing a Pyometra so please speak to our team for further advice on whether neutering your pet is advisory! 📞
