Teddy at Cheviot Court Care Home

Teddy, the lovely, relaxed Shih Tzu, has been coming to work with Louise at Cheviot Court Care Home for 5 1/2 years. That's not quite as long as Louise however, who has been at Cheviot Court since it opened 20 years ago, along with the housekeeper who is set to retire shortly.

It’s just the best thing to see how much the residents appreciate having a dog around, there’s even one resident who waits by their window each morning at 7am to wave at Teddy when he arrives for the day. Paula and Terry who organise the lifestyle activities at the care home take Teddy around to visit all the residents who all (well, mostly all - some people are cat people you know!) love to see him so much but they do have to keep a close eye on what the residents try to feed him!

Teddy's main base at the care home is Louise's office where he watches all the comings and goings in the main reception area and sometimes choosing Louise's desk as an excellent vantage point! Louise’s office has an amazing calm and positive vibe to it. Although Louise says the job of managing the care home and its 73 residents can be pretty tough sometimes (Covid was a particularly heartbreaking time), she loves to see how happy they are living under her care. She and the staff really do so much to make this one of the top-ranked care homes in South Tyneside.. with loads of activities and fundraisers, I could see they are like one big family.

I saw a couple of the residents while we were looking for the best spot for the shot and they were all super keen to have Teddy come over and say hello. We chose the conservatory for the photo and although for the photograph I fancied using one of the many hoists they have, they didn't actually look that interesting from the dog’s eye level, so we used a wheelchair and Zimmer frame as much more identifiable props.

Teddy will have his sixth birthday next month but even in dog years, that's nothing compared to the fantastic ages that some of the residents have celebrated! 102 being their high score, one lady reaching her 100th birthday last month and another centenary coming up in September.

Luna at S. Walton Eyecare

I thought I was going to meet 4 dogs at S. Walton Eyecare, but it turned out to be one dog with an awesomely epic name - meet Luna Tallulah Scooby-Dooby Doolan!

Luna doesn't usually come to work (I'm not sure people’s legs or the displays could survive her wagging tail - she is a little excitable) but she has been very much part of Kaye and Steve’s family ever since they took their kids to choose her from a farm in Scotland coming on for nearly 6 years ago. Kaye grew up with her parents walking labradors so a lab was the natural choice for them. Luna’s Dad is now an award-winning gundog so there may be high expectations for Luna’s eventual puppies.

I do adore a bit of local history and this place has it in bucket loads. Established by Sydney Walton in 1926, actually in the unit next door and at the time, a photographer was in what is now the current premises! They have a fantastic display of old photographs of the opticians and the street from over the last 10 decades, along with a newly commissioned piece of artwork of the building, of course including Luna. The business briefly closed when the current optometrist retired but Kaye bought the business in 2007 and has been running it ever since.

For a business with so much history, they are certainly not old-fashioned, with all the amazingly state-of-the-art equipment and lots of very lovely contemporary eyewear, this place is really moving forward. In fact, they are very much looking to the future when they will soon be celebrating the centenary of opening! Kaye’s heart for serving the community, providing a personalised service, and excellent customer care is evident in everything that they do, supporting local organisations, giving back, and encouraging others. One element of the business that Kaye clearly enjoys is the fashion side of the business and the buying of the glasses - that does sound like fun!

We looked all over the two-storey building but decided to use the main glasses display as our backdrop and have an antique trial set and lens meter with some contemporary glasses as the props (did I mention I love heritage!).

Lewis at Bridge Referrals

For my next One Dog & His Manager shoot, I was off to Boldon to visit Lewis, a border terrier, at Bridge Referrals, an independent small-animal referral hospital. Lewis often comes to work with Darren, one of the directors at the hospital. My dog is scared stiff of going anywhere near the vets, but obviously Lewis takes it all in his stride as it’s only another day, going to work for him!
I was so inspired hearing the story of the hospital which was set up by the vets themselves after wanting to move away from an animal hospital that was becoming increasingly corporate. They poured all their life savings and put everything on the line to set up one of only three independent hospitals in the North of England. They opened in October 2022 and totally smashed their first year’s targets, showing that they are definitely doing it right!
The business is named Referrals because when your pets need specialist treatment that local vets cannot provide, they refer them to hospitals such as these; for example, Darren specialises in oncology and medicine. Their passion and values shine through everything that they do and they truly have created a sense of community by developing close relationships with local vets, creating a family with the staff, valuing them, they also invest in training vets and nurses.
They also have an awesome focus on environmental, social and economic sustainability which is something very close to my heart. Hearing from Darren about all the things that they have done and plan to do was super exciting and inspiring! From the way the building has been constructed, looking at their waste, water, and energy sourcing and usage, to their business practices, all the scrubs are made from recycled ocean plastic, the waste reduction, enhanced recycling, sourcing from the UK but with a particular emphasis on local procurement… I could go on and on about this side of the business, I would highly recommend taking a look at their website if you are interested in all they do! They are constantly working towards net zero. It is mind-blowing how much they are doing but also super encouraging that this is possible and something businesses can be and are doing right now.
The building is huge (I may have got lost in there!) and they have so many specialist departments. We decided to use the CT scanner room for our shoot and included the multi-parameter machine (which checks all those things like blood pressure), the anaesthetic machine and of course Darren‘s stethoscope. Lewis was brilliant to photograph and I got loads of wet kisses, especially my nose (well, what do I expect lying on the floor!).

Mac at Sewinscool

I’ve always felt an affinity with Jack Russells, having grown up with one. And Mac was no different, even if he is crossed with a springer spaniel. He’s a super friendly dog and interested in everything going on around him. He was so much fun the whole time I was there, constantly bringing me his slobbery ball for me to throw for him.

Mac comes to work every day with Rosie who runs Sewinscool, a lovely business that teaches sewing and clothing manufacture, along with designing sportswear. She is working in collaboration with Ricky from Hoodex, a fab charity supporting our local young offenders and ex-offenders, helping break the cycle of offending through boxing coaching and giving them a sense of purpose. They’ve had a unit in the Nexus Interchange in South Shields since 2023 and have now expanded into premises in the marketplace in South Shields town centre, a three-story property with loads of potential. I’m super excited about their plans for the place!

You can pop into the shop on street level now and meet Mac; you’ll probably see Rosie too, working at the back of the shop, repurposing clothing and creating sustainable fashion. But soon she’ll be moving onto the top floor which is where we took the photo, you can see there is plenty of work yet to be done to bring the workshop to life! In the shot, we included the overlocker machine, her grandma’s thread box (I absolutely adore these connections to our past), some of the Hoodex merch and some boxing gloves. We passed through the middle floor, which is set up as the boxing gym. Rosie trains here twice a week herself and there are lots of sessions available, including women-only classes.

Rosie has 10 years of experience in the fashion industry, including working for Berghaus for 4 years. She is now working towards creating a line of boxing gear made locally, promoting practical, durable, and repairable sportswear. She has such a heart for helping people and loves to see folk learn, giving them something of value, and teaching life skills. We have a heritage of textile manufacturing and Rosie wants to invest back into the local community and help change the manufacturing story here in the UK.

Oscar at Kayaks

I was off to Horsley Hill to meet Oscar at The Kayaks next. Oscar doesn't usually come to work with Alison, the Chair of the charity, so he was really pleased to have a new place to explore! And there is lots to explore there, from the different play areas to the little café but I think he loved the sensory tent most. Alison's daughter and granddaughter were there for the shoot too and I could see the wonderful bond Oscar has with these two, there were loads of cuddles and then Alison's daughter showed me Oscar’s amazing repertoire of tricks and commands.

It was brilliant hearing about all that The Kayaks (Kids And Young Adults Klub support) has on offer. Coffee, under five stay and play, cooking and sewing classes for teens, DofE club and Mayors Award, under 18 social, and the list goes on! Alison's role as chair means she keeps an eye on things and makes sure everything is running smoothly. She's also the one that keeps policies up-to-date and does some of the bid writing (I don't know if any of you have ever had to write a bid application but it is very much on the list of my least favourite things to do, so well done to Alison and Malcolm!). She's also constantly liaising with all the other agencies and looking for new opportunities.

Alison told me one of the reasons she initially got involved with The Kayaks was to help her own daughter socialise, but she has gained so much more than that over the years. She really enjoys their play trips and said it's absolutely brilliant when young people achieve something. Alison clearly has a heart for inclusivity and this is something she pushes for in all they do. Her daughter also told me that Alison is very good at keeping everyone in line!

Oscar is a 7-year-old Bichon Frise Shih Tzu cross and like so many dogs of those breeds, his teeth may look like they've gone for walkies but he is still so adorable. We decided not to use the sensory tent for the shot even though Oscar clearly enjoyed it! We chose to use the open seating area as it gave us more space to move around (and for me to lie on the floor); you can see through to the café area too. The props we used in the shot are Grandad Billy (a puppet), the sensory ball which lights up and strobes through different colours (very difficult to get that effect in a photograph!), the sensory octopus, a big plush octopus (which, being purple, I had to include in the shot!), and the wooden activity cube always a favourite with busy little hands).

Next up we have the magnificent trio - Milo (who the shop is named after), Maverick (who the private hire space upstairs is named after) and the very recent addition of Magnus.

I would've been bringing you these doggos a couple of months ago but Magnus had only just joined the pack and he was still too young to be out and about! The beautiful pup was 5 months old on the day I photographed all three at the Milo & Co shop in South Shields town centre. At first I wasn't sure I was going to get into the shop as they were filming Vera in the unit next door! But after a quick chat to the security I was allowed in. Once we were all in, we chose where to take the shot. The trio had boundless energy between them and also gave the best kisses, which I couldn't resist even if I wanted to while lying on the floor.

I absolutely love seeing independent shops on the High Street, especially ones filled with all the goodies my little dog adores like this one. Milo & Co has everything your furry friend needs; you can see the natural treat bar along with one of their gorgeous beds and dog coats in the shot. Kate opened the shop last summer, a natural progression after running a dance retail business for 10 years. The shop not only has all the products, treats and food you can think of but upstairs is Maverick's Madhouse, a private hire space full of toys, agility, and enrichment equipment. It is perfect for letting your dog burn off energy with furry friends, your reactive dog to have a safe space to be off lead, or maybe your dog deserves their own party!

I could tell that Kate had a real passion for all the products she supplies, and she gets the most enjoyment out of helping people with nutrition and treats. I'm getting good advice on feeding dogs raw food, as there are so many misunderstandings and misconceptions. She helped me understand raw feeding a lot!

Pop down to the shop and get your doggo some lovely treats:

08/05/2024

Pilot was a lovely big friendly dog (a flat-coated retriever) and as students started to arrive for their class he was happily receiving all the fusses. we did disrupt their class slightly as we decided to do the shoot in the classroom rather than use some of the things they use in training like Resus Annie, the baby doll used for the flour baby assignment and the Heavy Heart (A realistic model of a heart covered in fatty goop in a jar to show what happens when fat builds up on your heart). So we decided to use the students as this is what Training in Care is all about.

There were students in the classroom in person, but also there were quite a few online, viewing the classroom from the We**am and they were all keen to see Pilot as well. Overall he was very well-received in the classroom.
Pilot’s furry brother recently passed away so he is a little anxious but coped really well with being in the centre of attention. However, once we finished photographing him, and Angela and I were talking, he was very keen to be off.

Angela is super passionate about the amazing qualifications that they have developed and delivered for the care sector. They have achieved many industry firsts, are an endorsed Centre of Excellence (the first in the North East) and they’ve won some pretty important contracts. However, Angela told me she’s most proud of the fantastic support given to people to enable them to succeed. They’ve written programs that have been delivered in a way that enables their students to achieve qualifications that they previously had never been able to access. Angela is a massive advocate for businesses working together so was super keen to get involved with the One Dog & His Manager project and I’m so glad she did!

30/04/2024

I’ve often seen Ash chilling on the sofa in the window at Community Barbers as I walk past since they are just a few shops down from the studio. I asked what breed Ash (or Ash Fetchum to give him his full Sunday name, any Pokemon fans out there?) is, and the answer … dog! As a rescue from Cyprus, I’m not sure how much is known about his background but he’s certainly a handsome boy.

For the last 6-8 months Ash has been coming into the shop and is a wonderful companion to David, sticking by his side as he moves from one area to another and settling on his bed by the chair while David is cutting. Ash is such a relaxed and gentle soul and makes everybody feel welcome.

David opened in Aug 2022, I asked him where the name came from and he said he wanted to foster a sense of community, where anyone and everyone is welcome. It doesn’t matter who you are, who you think you are or how you identify, everyone deserves to get the cut they want. I can very much appreciate this, as anyone who has followed me for a while will know I've had some pretty sharp cuts over the recent years that only a skilled barber can do. The place oozes inclusivity, all the way down to the vegan-friendly products David uses.

David had always thought barbering was a bit too traditional (and maybe a bit boring) for him but on a whim he took a course and has never looked back. He has such passion and he clearly sees it as the craft he has made it. The shop is very cool, with nods to skateboarding and has a lush chilled vibe. The stacks of vinyls next to the record player make me want to dig my player out of storage and listen to my old collection again.

29/04/2024

I met up with Otis at One Trinity Green, a groovy-looking building that I visit often when I attend the South Tyneside Pledge network events and the Invest South Tyneside Business Talks.

Otis is a beautiful French Bulldog with a gorgeous glossy coat which he probably owes to his strict diet (to help with pancreatitis). He hasn’t been in to work with Mischa before but made himself right at home as soon as he arrived. We had a look around the office for a spot to use for his photo but opted for the roof terrace - did I mention the building is pretty cool? You can see the building name in the background of the shot. Otis is seriously food-orientated, this always makes for a good model as it helps get them into position with the promise of a treat!

Otis’s person Mischa, the Senior Marketing Executive at Far North, works on building websites, creating video, and social media. She was telling me she most loves and enjoys finishing a website; her favourite to date is yet to go live so it’s still under wraps. I always see Misha at the Business Talks hosted by Far North, working her socks off in the background, making sure it all runs smoothly.

Speaking of socks, you can see Misha in the photograph in her trademark leopard print. This obsession with leopard print (a bit like my obsession with purple) all started with the leopard print UGG slippers that she is renowned for wearing everywhere. The props we included were a Rodecaster (which allows multiple mics on a single stream - essential for podcasting), a microphone, and the On Air sign - although it lights up yellow and for some reason, I feel like it should be red.

Far North is headed up by Ian Farrar, and if you recognise the name, you'll know that this article will never be big enough to cover all that he does. Amongst Far North’s marketing and coaching services and his popular Industry Angel podcast, Ian is also a fantastic public speaker and hearing him talk about having a passion project at a Pledge event is what kickstarted me into creating the One Dog & His Manager project (so you can blame him when I come knocking at your door wanted to photograph your dog).

It's always wonderful to come into people’s workplaces and be greeted by friendly snuffles and a wagging tail and Evie, the German Shepherd, was a joy to be met by!

She comes in with Vicki and Gary, of Rescue Pod Training, when they have office-based days and it's very much at home in the office. She was very relaxed and chilled while I spoke to the guys about some of their adventures delivering training sessions, teaching people how to save lives in some quite precarious situations and re-creating real-life scenarios with some pretty realistic injuries and gore for the trainees to contend with.

They had some really interesting props to use in their shot that they use in their everyday work. There was a fall arrest lanyard (I had to check this is very different from the lanyard you put around your neck with your access pass on!), a special helmet and rope, a first aid medical kit and a clever high viz tabard that is held together with Velcro so if it gets caught on something, it rips apart rather than taking you with it (Evie was modelling this last item beautifully although she drew the line a wearing the boots!).

I could see Gary and Vicki's pride and passion they have in the quality of the training they can deliver that comes from the different experiences in Gary's background – it certainly is something extraordinary to give people the ability to save another person’s life.

Billy is a gorgeous little Jack Russell, he was chilling on the sofas when I came into the office but bounded up to greet me. He then came and settled beside me while I chatted to his Lisa about what they do at Escape Intervention. He got super excited when Lynn, the big boss lady, came in - then I learnt she is Grandma to him!

Escape works with about 400 kids a year with their activities and about 200 a year with the counselling service but they have seen about a 50% increase in the counselling demand in the last year. They are so proud to give these kids opportunities to experience activities that they wouldn’t have a chance to otherwise. They deliver craft sessions, music sessions, activities like indoor climbing, and outdoor activities like fishing and kayaking. It's these outdoor activities that the kids relish as they are something so totally different for them to experience.

We decided not to use the office spaces for the shot but go down to the boat storage and use the kayaks as the props which meant a trip to the beach for Billy - does the work day get any better?? The wind has been so strong recently and little Billy’s ear nearly blew off but he performed beautifully for us with the promise of a walk on the beach after the shoot was all he needed.

I met Connie at the beach as the business is dog walking, so this is effectively their office... a pretty good office if you ask me! With the wind blowing and the iconic Herd Groyne Lighthouse as a backdrop we got our images. I’ve had Connie in the studio before, an absolutely beautiful whippet whose photos got me to the final round of judging at the Master Photography Annual Awards a couple of years ago.

Connie frequently spends the days with Shannon on her dog-walking escapades, which I imagine must be a dog's dream pastime. But she also has rest days - we all need rest days, no matter how much we love our work. Connie is a big fan of digging holes in the sand and she loves to encourage the dogs she’s out walking with to join in the fun. She’s such a social dog and wanted to go and invite all the dogs she saw to play with her, but she was amazing at responding to the whistle recall. Teaching and training her doggy clients is something that Shannon loves and takes great pride in, especially when she gets such fantastic feedback from the dogs’ owners.

Shannon is equipped with her dog bag containing a long line, water bowl, water, treats dog, pate (a favourite treat with the dogs), poo bags and a simple but ingenious doohicky that holds multiple used poo bags, freeing up her hands for the dogs until she can find a bin, and finally a spare slip lead as she regularly comes across stray or lost dogs that she delivers to the vets to be reunited with their owners. Connie wears a tracker when she’s out so never runs the risk of getting lost. It’ll be extra useful for her upcoming trip across Europe in a campervan I was hearing about and I promise I’m not jealous at all…

Next up are the Chihuahuas Cleo, Kes and George. The trio don’t usually come to the office so I met them in reception, we had a quick once around the block for a comfort break before taking them upstairs into the office area. The gang might be little dogs but they have big personalities. Cleo and Kes are both a year older than my Jackie and little George is a year younger than her. They had the best time tearing back and forth along the corridor and into the offices. At home, they are normally only on hard flooring and this was a great opportunity to get some traction. They expended masses of energy but I don’t think they wore themselves out at all!

Marshall Hall Levy has existed in South Shields for over 180 years. Julie, Head of Wills and Probate and Employment Law, shared with me the satisfaction she finds in her work, helping clients understand the legal protections that are available to them, so often people don’t know what’s out there to help. Our conversation revealed not just the depth of her expertise but also the warmth and care she brings to her role. It was an enlightening discussion that reminded me of the importance of understanding and accessing legal help.

In the building there were shelves and shelves of beautiful old law books, which I thought would be fantastic to have in the photograph, along with deed papers, all tied with pink ribbon (apparently back in the day, any court papers had to legally be tied with pink ribbon) We also borrowed a beautiful old wax legal seal press which was acting as a doorstep in the office.
