Hip dysplasia in dogs π
π’ Hip dysplasia is a painful condition that normally causes one or both hip joints to develop abnormally whilst a puppy is growing πΆ
π’ It is often a genetic condition that gets passed down from one or both parents. Symptoms for the condition include:
πΎ "Bunny Hopping" running with both back legs in a synchronized movement
πΎ Limping/ Lameness
πΎ Stiffness - difficulty getting up and down
πΎ A wobbly / swaying walk
πΎ Difficulty getting up and down steps, the car and stairs
πΎ Less interest in walks
πΎ Skinny hips ( No muscle surronding the pelvis)
πΎ Some dogs don't show symptoms until alot older in age and normally have osteoarthritis aswell
π’ There are now genetic testing and hip scoring tests before breeding in order to prevent the condition happening in dogs π
π’ Although Kylo has Hip Dysplasia in the left hip joint, it is only mild and therefore conservative management focusing on pain relief in the form of massage and LASER, weight management , controlled and targeted exercises and anti inflammatory medications have been chosen with Kylo's owners instead of Surgery π
π’ Kylo had his hip joint treated during the physiotherapy appointment, however due to compensation, Kylo has a very sore back on the right hand side. This is a short before and after Kylo's veterinary phsyiotherapy session
π’ If your dog suffers with Hip Dysplasia, please don't hesitate to contact us πΎ

π Practicing what we preach π
π’ Snow doing some polework this afternoon ahead of competition season ππ
Yes, dogs can also do polework!!
π’ Due to snow being an advanced canine athletes who is already used to polework, she had poles raised in order to challenge her and make her body work abit harder πͺ
π’ Polework for dogs can be useful in many ways including conditioning canine athletes and being helpful for dogs post surgery
π’ We are aiming to improve snows hindlimb range of motion, proprioception and maintain strength in her hindlimbs
π’ Polework can help with:
- Improving and maintaining muscle mass
- Improving core stability and epaxial muscles
- Easing joint stiffness and Improving ROM
- Increasing endurance and coordination
- Reducing joint pain
- Releasing soft tissue restriction and tension
If you feel your dog could benefit from veterinary phsyiotherapy whether they are coming up for competion season or removing from injury please don't hesitate to contact me π π

We are no where near perfect yet, but I am beginning to teach Snow how to walk backwards uphill ππ€
π’ Following a sartorius strain injury in December snow has been having PEMFT therapy alongside massage to reduce swelling and prevent muscle contracture πΆ
π’ For those who don't know, the sartorius muscle originates from the iliac Crest and cranial iliac spine, as well as the lumbosacral fascia - it also originates from the bony ridge between two ventral spines of the ilium
It then inserts to the cranial border of the tibia making it a flexor of the hip and stifle when the limb is protracted and a extensor of the stifle when your dog is standing πͺ
π’ We are now completing exercises to strengthen the hindlimb muscles and range of motion of the HL joints but specifically targeting the sartorius and quadriceps to help prevent future injury
π’ Following your animals injury, a veterinary physiotherapist can provide you with a tailored exercise regime to assist your animals recovery π
π’ If you feel your dog would benefit from veterinary phsyiotherapy please don't hesitate to contact me π

Although me and Snow did not win today's straight racing due to her veering of to the side π«£ this video demonstrates why I stretch snow after each training session or after our daily walks πͺ πΆ
π’ By stretching after exercise, it allows muscle spindles to elongate during muscle movement in races like these but also increase the flexibility of the muscle fibres themselves
π’ When we stretch our dogs and horses correctly and for long enough, it allows the golgi tendon organs to override the muscle spindles activity. Meaning the muscle can be stretched to its optimum length!!
π’ Ultimately resulting in your sporting animals being able to use these muscles to their maximum capacity and length, such as Snow is demonstrating in her double suspension phase and getting up to top spot very quickly π

Whilst in the middle of exam season and revision it was lovely to treat Bill yesterday afternoon in the sunshine π
Bill enjoyed some exam practice of massage techniques which you can clearly see he loved π΄π
Bill had hypertonicity across his cervical trapezius and splenius muscle which was relieved by deep efflurage, compression and kneading across the fibrotic tissue.
When getting responses like this, it makes all the hard work worth it and I look forward to treating more equine clients when qualified π΄ππ
π’ PEMFT π’
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy
'Use of electromagnetic fields in order to treat various injuries and bone related conditions , acute and chronic pain'
Both animals enjoyed the PEMFT treatment this week which was also followed up by massage and laser application for Ice.
Some benefits of PEMFT include :
π’ Nerve healing
π’ Fracture repair
π’ Repairing ligaments ans tendons
π’ Pain relief
π’ Release from tight and restricted fascia
PEMFT can also aid in preparation of competitions by 'toning up' muscles before the event ! It does this by increasing the blood flow to those muscles and giving them an extra BOOST
