πŸŽ†πŸΆ Preparing for Fireworks πŸŽ† 🐴

I know it may seem early but preparation in these cases always helps!

🟒 This may be useful to some of my clients with animals who get worried or stressed by Fireworks πŸŽ†

🟒 Dorwest Herbs have a great offer on herbal supplements to help calm your pets during Fireworks evenings, when ordering don't forget to use the code FIREWORKS24 for your 25% discount

🟒 I always recommend Dorwest Herbs and use many of their supplements on my own dogs πŸ•

🟒 Otherways to prepare your animals for Fireworks night may include:

🐾 Playing white noise on the TV

🐾 Using highly rewarding distractions or treats to keep their minds occupied

🐾 Calming Jackets or Thunder Jackets - Pets UK ans pets at home have a great selection

🐾 ADAPTIL Calming diffuser

🐾 Some dogs may tolerate Fireworks abit better if you begin playing Fireworks sounds on the TV or CD now and keep the noise quiet. Not all dogs tolerate this disassociation but I have been recommended this method by the Vets

🐾 Provide a quiet and Calming space similar to a Den and keep curtains, doors and windows shut

🐾 Where possible, keep your pets indoors

🟒 To help keep your horses calm during bonfire night here are some tips to help:

🐴 Get in touch with your neighbours at other livery yards, farms or stables to see if there are any planned fireworks being let off in your local area - knowing in advance can help you prepare

🐴 If your horse is stabled, check for anything that could cause injury (string, nails etc)

🐴 If your horse is usually out in the field and it is safe to do so, check fencing and for foreign objects laying around in the field

🐴 If necessary ask your vet for potential sedation or move your horse elsewhere for the evening

🐴 BBC radio offer a great music station for horses to listen too

πŸ• I often get asked by Clients or at Dog shows:

🟒 How often should I exercise my puppy?

🟒 Do you think my dog is ready for work this year?

🟒 Do you think it's the right time to put her into the racing?

🟒 Is there any such thing as the 5 minute per month of age rule?

My advice is if your puppy or dog has not yet fully grown, please do not work, compete in high intensity events or exercise too much as you can cause deleterious effects on your puppies growing musculoskeletal system.

Although many owners are not aware, research has shown that although it may be tempting to put your 11 month old puppy in that race, start that 14 month old puppy or doing an extra 5 minutes of exercise, it has detrimental effects on the formation of your puppies bones and joints.

Growth plates are scientifically known as epiphyseal plates. Ends of bones with soft cartilage formation. As your puppy grows and gets older, these plates become hard by ossification - the natural process of bone formation.

Dogs4motion Academy for active dogs - demonstrates an amazing diagram at the ages your dogs growth plates close and are fully developed. Obviously size and breed will differentiate slightly of the average but please be mindful when these questions do occur to yourself. There are many other ways to keep your puppy entertained other than exercise, often mental stimulation is enough to keep them occupied:

🐾 Snuffle mats/ lickimats

🐾 Plenty of smelling on your walks

🐾 Dog puzzles

🐾 Training at home

🐾 Treat filled toys or chews

If you are unsure on when to start training your puppy for physical acitvity or competitive sports, please always consult with your veterinary physiotherapist or veterinary surgeon 🐾

If you have any questions regarding your puppies growth and development please feel free to contact me 🐢

✨️ Patient Progress✨️

🟒 Bo is a 10 year old Schnauzer with recently diagnosed left hindlimb patella luxation πŸ•

🟒The patella (kneecap) is a small bone at the front of the knee (stifle) joint, positioned between the quadriceps muscle and a tendon that attaches it to the (tibia). This is termed the quadriceps mechanism. As the knee flexes and extends the kneecap glides into a groove (trochlea) at the end of the thighbone (femur). Occasionally, the kneecap slips out of the groove; this is called luxation (dislocation) of the patella. The dislocation usually occurs towards the inside (medial aspect) of the knee, however, it can also dislocate towards the outside (lateral aspect) of the joint. Patellar luxation can affect many different breeds of dogs including Yorkshire Terriers, Labrador Retrivers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Poodles.

🟒 Bo has a combination of anti inflammatory medications, joint supplements provided by Dorwest, Canned Fish and physiotherapy to help collectively manage her musculoskeletal condition.

🟒 Bo is currently seen weekly to monitor progress, adapt and change prescribed exercises and provide pain relief using PEMFT and LASER to the surronding muscles and joint and ensure home/ Boat adaptations are in place to make daily life for Bo easier ☺️

🟒 Bo's owner has recently said "This will be Bo's fourth treatment this week either Kyla and what a difference it had already made! She is beginning to use the steps on our boat more, more willing to come for a small walk and is starting to get up easier from sitting or lying down. I cannot thankyou enough Kyla. I wish we had been recommended you sooner we and Bo are so very grateful" πŸ•

🟒 As a owner of a sporting/working dog we forget how much we do actually ask of our dogs πŸ•

🟒 We do demand so much as a sporting dog owner, speed, agility, coordination, stamina, consistency and precision is just a few elements to name what we expect 🐾

🟒 Hence the reason we cannot ask for perfection if we do not provide regular musculoskeletal check ups

🟒 What do you do as owners away from the arena or field?

🟒 As owners we spend so much on correct nutrition, training and kit, please don't overlook that little inconsistent lameness or little ni**le or they arent running like they used too. If you are running a dog with a possible discomfort or injury please don't expect them to win that rosette or achieve in the field 🐢

🟒 Subtle signs will always show through even when they will still persist to perform to their of their ability. It necessity for every sporting and working dog to recieve musculoskeletal therapy in order to perform at their best and pain free πŸ•πŸΎπŸΆ

🟒🐢 Client Review 🐢🟒

🟒 Spikey has been receiving physiotherapy for the past 3 weeks to help with his cerebellar hypoplasia

🟒 Cerebellar hypoplasia is a neurological condition where there is inadequate development of the cerebellum, a large portion of the brain which is responsible for motor impulses. Dogs and cats with this condition find it hard to maintain balance, posture and coordination.

🟒 As a result of this, Spikey has compensatory pain in his muscles, especially his back muscles and hindlimbs. The aim with our physiotherapy sessions is to provide pain relief, stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and prescribe suitable exercises to do at home in between sessions.

Here is what Spikeys owner has said

"Spikey just had his weekly physio session and this week he has this special tape along his hamstring (I think lol) to make him start using this left leg more and try to build the muscle back up on it and take all the pressure off the right leg who has massive muscles but is working over time! He absolutely LOVES these sessions and I can honestly say it is the BEST thing I've ever done for him. The last 3 weeks I have seen the biggest changes in him. Hes walking better, he wants to play again, he's wagging his tail again, he's greeting me at the door again, he wants to bounce about outside again. He's not tense and uncomfortable, fidgeting and whineing 24/7 anymore! I wish I had known about this back in 2022 but you live and learn. We are still working on the deep chronic knots and stresses along his spine from years of compensating gait and lots of work to do on the left hind but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel again now.
I can't thank Kyla Bailey Veterinary Physiotherapy enough! Massage, stretches, laser treatment, tape, heat pads and magnet therapy all in the comfort of his own bed for £40. West Midlands and Warwickshire covered. If your dog (or horse or cat!) has soft tissue injuries, arthritis, all sorts of issues; the incredible Kyla can help! Thank you soooooo much lovely and I'll see you next week for Spike & Cooper 🫢🏻"

🟒 I am so happy to see Spikey is feeling better and you are very much welcome!! Just a small reminder of why we train to do what we do for animals πŸ’šπŸ•

🟒 If you have a dog who you think would benefit from veterinary physiotherapy sessions with us, please don't hesitate to contact me 🐢
