Absolutely the worst post to write, yesterday we said goodbye to the legend that is Jet bear. She has been by my side through university, boyfriends and break ups, holidays, 3 house moves, my wedding and my pregnancy and arrival of Evie and much much more. Too many memories and stories to share here but many of you will have your own as she was the largest character ever and touched a lot of hearts. Noble, loyal and brave till the end, rest easy my beautiful girl, reunited with Flint where you can chase as many squirrels and hares as you like. 💔

🐶🐶 Important announcement 🐶🐶

Firstly there are only 3 more group sessions left before I go off on maternity leave 😬, the final session on the 6th of December will be the Christmas party at an amended time of 7-8pm where all groups will be together for a final class/celebration. I need to know final numbers for the Xmas training session/party so please confirm your attendance this Wednesday.

I can still offer some very limited 1-2-1 session up to the 10th of December on Sundays only.

Please can everyone ensure that they are paid up to date before the 6th of December, if you are unsure where you are up to with payments please just ask ☺️.

I am hoping to restart classes again from mid/end of April so please keep your eyes peeled on the page for updates!

A wonderfully written post and really worth the read

Is mounting or hu***ng a sign of dominance in dogs?

Hu***ng or mounting is a fixed action pattern (FAP), which are innate behaviours. These are behaviours that are common to all members of a species and require no learning. A Fixed Action Pattern (FAP) is a predictable series and stereotypical sequences of complex actions triggered by a cue - www.simplypsychology.org. www.sciencedirect.com.

Hu***ng or mounting is NOT:
Dominance
Controlling you or another dog
Alpha behaviour
Only seen in unsterilised dogs
Only seen in males
Only seen in younger dogs
To cause you embarrassment
To get your attention or get back at you

Hu***ng or mounting by male or female dogs of any age CAN be due to:
Excitement
Sexual rehearsal
Burning off pent up energy
General stimulation...yippee, something’s happening!
Stress/Anxiety/Displacement behaviour
Play
Hyperarousal
A medical issue
Boredom
Frustration
Burning of excessive energy (like zoomies)
Ambivalence about a situation or a dog
Unease
Tiredness

If you are worried:
Make a note of how many times a day this is happening.
Take your dog for a medical check up.
Contact a up to date science-based behaviour consultant to identify the triggers and the emotions to be able to develope a modification plan to improve the emotional state and hence the behaviour.
What to do in the moment - if the dog underneath seems uncomfortable and stressed then please interrupt. It may mean that the 'top dog' is unable to read the body language of the other one. Rather redirect that energy to a toy or chew as opposed to saying off. Give him something mentally stimulating to do instead. If they are having turns and alternating this behaviour with other behaviours like chasing, tumbling, play bows, etc., then leave them be.
Be careful of your dog doing it to random dogs in a park that he does not know. The unknown dog could become aggressive due to not wanting the behaviour.

Note - many Google searches for this behaviour will bring up the word dominance. The behaviour is not due to such a simplistic, misunderstood term. Dogs do it to pillows, toys or furniture - do you think that they are trying to dominate those inanimate objects? Every dog is an individual with unique emotions. The feelings and motivations for the behaviour will differ from dog to dog but it is certainly not about dominance. Don't believe everything you read on Google and check your trainer's/behaviourist's credentials. Let's not label every behaviour beyond our understanding as dominant 🙂

Most guardians rush to sterilize their dogs when this happens...it may not make a difference.

*** Dog Training Walks ***

Now the weather has cooled down enough dog training walks are back! I have limited dates available but depending on popularity I could add more.

Training walks are designed for dogs that I have met and that have a sound temperament walking with other dogs. They are not something I would advise for reactive/extremely nervous dogs. Dogs that are currently training with me please talk to me re the suitability of attending.

The walk consists of an hour and a half walking in the countryside and if appropriate your dog will have the opportunity to go off lead/on a long line depending on ability to practice recall around another dogs. Please come dressed for any weather and be prepared for mud! I would suggest bringing towels and drying coats for your dogs.

Dates/times available are:-
30th of September at 11am
15th of October at 9:30am
4th of November at 9:30am

The cost of the group walk is £20 per dog. Please message me to discuss or book a slot

Love this, I often talk about creating a ’low positive’ state of mind in our dogs when training. We know dogs are only capable of learning when they are in the low positive/relaxed state of mind. We should always try and create calmness and a relaxed state to effectively teach our canine partners

Comparative neurobiology

The size of the brain isn't what determines the intelligence of the animal, the amount of wrinkles do!
If it was the size of the brain that determined the intelligence, then a German Shepherd would technically be more intelligent than a Chihuahua, which we know is not the case.

The more socially complex the animal is, the more wrinkles they have. We know dogs are socially complex, they have social skills that often challenges human emotional fitness.

Now compare the dog brain to the horse brain!

We all know how intelligent dogs are, maybe we're not giving horses enough credit for their intelligence?

Why is it then that horses don't often offer us cognitive behaviours like dogs, such as problem solving, reasoning, impulse control, etc?

Because, for the brain to access these areas, the individual needs to FEEL safe. If the brain doesn't feel safe, all brain functions will be carried out automatically using the deeper structures of the brain. These deeper structures are subcortical, meaning they're under the wrinkly stuff (neocortex) you see in this picture, and their role is designed to help the individual stay safe and alive.

This area of the brain is called the limbic system (AKA primal brain, survival brain, flight/fight brain, emotional brain).

I refer to it as the primal brain. This brain is automatic and unconscious. It doesn't require thought process and is not concerned with responsiveness. It's job is to react and it is best friends with the sympathetic nervous system (stress response nervous system).

When you, your horse, or your dog receives sensory input or a memory and perceives it as unsafe, ALL behaviour, movement and body language will be coming from the primal brain, NOT the wrinkly stuff you see.

We expect our fellow humans, horses and dogs to be operating out of the wrinkly thinky stuff, but that can ONLY happen when the brain feels safe.

Most humans, horses and dogs in today's world are suffering with chronic stress, which means their brains are not only perceiving their world as unsafe, but they are in this state for the entirety of their waking hours.

This has major physiological, mental and emotional repercussions.

How can we help downgrade this chronic stress and start accessing the wrinkly stuff in ourselves, our horses and our dogs?

🧠 Consciously communicate in a way that creates a calm brain 🧠

A calm brain will downgrade the sympathetic nervous system and stress response hormones and allow access to all the juicy cognitive performance areas of the brain that we ALL want access to!

Happy brain training 🧠
Charlotte 😊

The wonderful Jet bear, the original, my first dog as an adult and the start of my dog training journey and my inspiration.

What stories I could tell about Jet, as a puppy she was wild and her eyes used to roll into the back of her head showing the whites of her eyes, her tongue hanging out at the same time while she just ran like an unguided missile…

I took her to training classes, agility classes and then I started doing some gundog work with her. She had all the talent and ability in everything she did, qualifying for crufts at a agility but an injury meant we couldn’t go, always being one of the fastest in the gun dog scurry’s at the game fair. That being said she has ALWAYS had her own mind and embarrassed me frequently (things like making up her own agility course and just coming back to me when she was done). The area she has excelled in most is with my dog training business, she has been patient and kind to every dog I have ever introduced her to, she has taught many dog boundaries through appropriate communication and she certainly keeps my boys in line. She isn’t the most highly trained obedient dog in the world (she does know upwards of 30 commands) but she’s a fantastic all rounder who in her prime would have tried absolutely anything asked of her as she’s fearlessly brave and loyal.

Why am I posting this, I suppose to say all dogs start out somewhere, perfection isn’t achievable nor is it realistic. Look at your dog and your lifestyle and how can you work together to achieve an equilibrium. Look at what our dogs give us and what we can give them, let’s not focus on what they can’t do or what they find challenging let’s focus on what they need. We need to adapt to our dogs and learn from them, we need to stop putting them in scenarios when all they can do is fail and get it wrong, unless we are willing to accept their failure with good grace. Sometimes we need to compromise with our dog, sometimes we need to show them exactly what we want and sometimes we just need to leave them alone. Understanding how they think as an animal, their body language and what they were bred to do will help us guide them through life.

Jet is 3 months off her 15th birthday, she’s a young soul at heart and at her age owes me absolutely nothing. She just does the things she wants when she wants now. if she wants to go for a walk she goes, if she doesn’t, she stays at home 🤷🏻‍♀️. She’s always been a master of her own destiny and I’ve always been a passenger.

Here she is on yesterday evenings walk just running because she felt like it 🥰

Motto for the weekend, be more Jet as it’s good for the soul.

24/07/2023

When people enquire about training classes one of the common questions I get asked is do the dogs get to run around off lead and play.

My short answer to this is no, uncontrolled off lead play under the guise of ‘socialising’ is one of the most damaging things we can do for our dogs. I never allow rough or out of control play between dogs in classes, on training walks or with my own dogs at home. If this behaviour starts it is stopped immediately.

Dogs need to learn to be calm, switch off and trust/listen to their owner. Over friendly/over socialised dogs can become dangerous in an instant due to their inability to listen to their owner and respond to other dogs cues that they don’t like it.

Please don’t allow your dogs to run up to and play with other dogs without permission from both the owner and positive signals from the other dog and especially don’t let them engage in rough out of control play. You should be able to stop play and recall your dog at anytime, if you can’t they are out of control.

21/07/2023

As a dog trainer it’s very worrying to see dog bites/hospital admissions on the increase. It’s important to look at the possible causes as to why? I have my own theories and it certainly isn’t a one size fits all, but the main factors I believe from what I’m seeing are:-

1. We are anthropomorphising dogs (treating them like humans and using human emotions to explain their behaviour). Dogs are not small humans, they are dogs and we need to educate them in a way that they understand.

2. The increase in people breeding dogs ‘just because they want to’ because they are a nice colour or fashionable without considering the health and temperament of the parents. Breeding for good health and sound temperament should be top of the list of reasons to breed not unusual colours/markings or a new trend, these should be the last reason we breed.

3. Many people don’t seek professional help with their dogs until it’s too late. Or they fail to fully invest in the advice given and only do it ‘some of the time’ not consistently. Or people attend one training class in the hope that 1 hour with a trainer or behaviourist and their dog will suddenly be the perfect pupil. Unfortunately dog training and behaviour management is life long. It needs to be consistent and maintained for the entirety of the dogs life not just an hour, a day or a week.

I meet so so many wonderful dog owners and clients who are wholeheartedly invested in their dogs well being but for every person I meet and help there are 20 more who don’t seek out the help or don’t even realise that their dogs need it until it’s too late.

Let’s educate people and dogs together and hope that at some point we can send these statistics the other way and that those owners who don’t invest seek help/guidance BEFORE it becomes a problem not after.

Dog attacks have reached a new high, with hospital admissions rising 6% last year to 9,336, new NHS figures reveal.

The main man went for his check up at the vets following intermittent lameness. Luckily it’s just soft tissue/muscular 🙌 so he’s had the go ahead to start off lead exercise again (gradually) after a few weeks on lead walks only, easier said than done with a crazy cocker 🤣. This boy is always in work/training mode and demonstrated his down stay in the vets beautifully 😍. He will be back at training tonight!
