A greyhound who was shamefully brought to a dog pound in Cork to be put to sleep has appeared in a BBC documentary about greyhound industry victims.
In the short film, Kim Ellis of the Forever Hounds Trust told the the BBC: "I think greyhound racing should be banned". She highlighted the suffering of dogs, saying they are used "purely for the gambling and gaming industry - it's pure greed".
She went on to say that greyhound racing not only physically affects the dogs, it mentally affects them, referring to them being kept “in their kennels 95 per cent of the time".
One of the rescued greyhounds featured in the programme is "Jackson" who did some racing but "didn't make the grade so he was taken to the pound in Ireland, in Cork, to be put to sleep.”
He is now in the UK after being rescued.
"If I go and pick up dogs, it makes me so, so angry to see these dogs that are just used for pure greed" Kim said. "They’re just discarded by the racing industry. I’m just thankful I’m saving that dog from what could have been a life of misery. People say that greyhound racing is a great pastime - I just think that greyhound racing is well past its sell-by date. Nobody sees behind the scenes what happens in kennels, all the injuries that the dogs get. We as a charity and lots of other charities pick up the pieces.”

Jackson is not the first Irish greyhound to feature on British television. Last year, ITV's Good Morning Britain interviewed Kerry Elliman of Birmingham Greyhound Protection who spoke about what happens to greyhounds not quick enough to win. She told viewers: "Eli, who is here now, didn't make the grade. He actually got hit over the head with a spade in Ireland."
The latest available dog pound statistics show that 80 greyhounds were destroyed in Irish dog pounds in 2017, bringing to 2,729 the number of greyhounds killed in pounds in the past eight years. The local authority figures reveal that 215 "stray and unwanted greyhounds" ended up in pounds in 2017, including 180 surrendered greyhounds. Twenty of these were reclaimed or rehomed, 114 were transferred to dog welfare groups and the remaining 80 didn't make it out alive.
Since 2010, over 3,300 greyhounds have been surrendered to pounds around the country.
The pound death rate for greyhounds has been falling since 2010 when 672 were euthanised but this is most likely due to the fact that most of the pounds no longer accept greyhounds for euthanasia.
The greyhounds being killed in pounds represent just a small portion of the greyhound industry's victims. In the past four years alone, 1,559 greyhounds suffered injuries and 506 were killed by track vets. In addition, thousands of greyhounds go missing each year, presumed killed when found to be too slow to win races. One Irish trainer remarked online: "I've seen dogs being shot. It has to be done as there's too many of them to rehome." A former chairman of the Irish Greyhound Board meanwhile admitted on Cork's 96 FM that he believes it is "absolutely" okay for thousands of dogs to be killed and that racing couldn't exist without the destruction of dogs.
