Last week we had to say a fond farewell to one of our amazing nurses. 😢👩🏻‍⚕️

Amanda has been an integral part of the team here for an incredible 10 years! She will be greatly missed by us all here at Brook House Vets. 💚💚💚

Whilst we are sad to see her go, we are all so very proud of her journey taken to becoming a fully qualified registered veterinary nurse. 🩺

Please help us to wish her the best in her future endeavours. 🙌🏻

Meet Bertie

Bertie was the goodest boy recently when he came in to have a lump removed. He sailed through the anaesthetic and recovered nicely. Since then we've seen him twice and he has healed beautifully. All the more impressive as Bertie is 13 years old and these things can take more out of them. Mum has done a fabulous job looking after him during his recovery.

Bertie showing us his adorable self and tricks that he can do.

🩺 OUR NURSES CAN… PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN SURGERY! 🩺

Behind every successful procedure is a calm, skilled veterinary nurse 💙

From the moment your pet arrives with us, it’s often one of our nurses who welcomes them in — and later makes sure they’re safely tucked back into your arms at home 🐶🐱

✨ What do our nurses do during surgery?
• Prepare patients and surgical equipment
• Monitor anaesthesia and vital signs
• Support the vet throughout the procedure
• Ensure a smooth, safe and comfortable recovery

They’re the heartbeat of our operating theatre 🫶

Lovely Sadie,

Sadie has a public service announcement today on how to keep cool in this weather. Especially if you're a bracycephalic breed.

Sadie says

- Cooling coats can help
- Ice cubes
- Frozen treats and toys
- A cool shower
- Fans (although be careful of bracy eyes as this can dry them out)
- Air con units if possible
- Staying inside with curtains closed

Despite temperatures lowering. Humidity is still high and this can be just as negative as the soaring temperatures of yesterday..

Stay cool like Sadie. 👍 🐕 ❤️

Little Sadie.

This was Sadie in recovery post spay. When we say a patient is in recovery this is what we mean...

☆ Close monitoring of vitals post a procedure. These include heart/pulse rate, respiration rate and temperature. Mucous membrane colour and capillary refill time.

☆ Pain scoring ensuring we keep them as comfortable as possible.

☆ Waking from a sedation or general anaesthetic can be very worrying for pets so just being close to them can help relieve some anxiety.

Each patient responds differently and so are nursed according to their own needs.

Sadie recovered well especially once she had a small meal 😋 🐈 😻

With this weather comes reminders of how to keep our pets safe during warm weather. So we can all enjoy it sensibly. Remember all pets need to keep cool in this weather, whether its a dog, cat, rabbit, bird or hamster. All have different needs and may need adjustments to ensure they stay healthy and comfortable. Even indoor pets can suffer from the heat.

Stay safe.

🩺 HOW DO I BECOME A VETERINARY NURSE? 🩺

Ever wondered how our amazing nurses got their start? 👩‍⚕️🐶🐱

There are two exciting pathways into veterinary nursing:

🐾 Vocational Training
• Full-time, usually 2 years
• Often completed as an advanced apprenticeship (but non‑apprenticeship options are available too!)

🎓 Higher Education
• Takes around 3–5 years
• Length depends on the course and level of degree

✅ What do you need?
• Typically 5 GCSEs at grade C or above
• Work experience in a vet practice or animal-related role is highly recommended 🐕🐾
