Longdown Farm Facts: Ducklings

It takes 28 days to hatch a duck egg
When first hatched the ducklings are covered in down which keeps them warm, in the wild the mother duck will cover the young with her wings and feathers, ducklings hatched in incubators are kept under heat lamps until they grow feathers this is normally about four weeks
Ducklings are not fully waterproof until they are about two months old
The main diet for ducklings is insects and weeds
A male duck is called a drake and a female is called a duck
Ducks often live up to ten years.

Longdown Farm Facts:

Calves weigh approximately 36kg (80lb) at birth, they can stand and walk within 30 minutes after being born.
Most calves grow horns these are normally removed when they are about six weeks old, this prevents them hurting each other when they are older, although some are now polled meaning they will not grow horns at all.
They must have the first milk that their mother produces this is called colostrum, this rich milk contains lots of antibodies which helps the calves immune system.

Longdown Farm Facts:

Most farmers who keep livestock have a “working dog” these help to round the up the sheep or cows from field to field.
This is Jess Longdown’s Border collie, her main job is putting the chickens and ducks away at night.
Border collies are extremely intelligent and loyal to their owners, it’s not uncommon for a working dog to run over twenty
miles a day, some have been recorded to run over fifty miles!
Collies have excellent hearing and eyesight.
