Longdown Farm Facts:
Calves weigh approximately 36kg (80lb) at birth, they can stand and walk within 30 minutes after being born.
Most calves grow horns these are normally removed when they are about six weeks old, this prevents them hurting each other when they are older, although some are now polled meaning they will not grow horns at all.
They must have the first milk that their mother produces this is called colostrum, this rich milk contains lots of antibodies which helps the calves immune system.
Charley & Jimmy have been enjoying lots of quality time together on forest rides while the farm has been closed this winter ❤️#longdownactivityfarm #lifeofjimmy #longdownfarm #behindthescenes #horseriding

Longdown Farm Facts:
Shetland ponies are a native breed of the Shetlands in Scotland, they grow up to 42 inches
Chesney our Shetland pony is extremely cheeky and can be very stubborn.
Shetland ponies normally live up to 35 years, they are extremely greedy creatures and very often become ill due to eating to much, Chesney is on a very strict diet otherwise he will become very lame. These ponies are very hardy and can withstand extremely cold temperatures without the need of any additional coats, it's vital that they have a shelter to protect them from the wind and rain.
Chesney will be given his favourite treat on Christmas Day - that's two Extra Strong mints.
Shetland ponies make an ideal first pony and normally bond with their young owner, they enjoy lots of cuddles.
Wishing everyone a Very Happy Christmas from all the team at Longdown Activity Farm
The animals are still munching & enjoying the left over pumpkins from Halloween 🎃

The Cherry Valley ducks that we have are Longdown are a commercial breed capable of producing 300 eggs a year, they make great pets.Ducks have amazing eyesight and see objects 3 x further than humans, they very often sleep with one eye open watching for predators, their web feet assist swimming as well as being able to walk over boggy land without getting stuck. Female ducks are much noisier than the males as they quacks, males make a raspy noise.Duck eggs contain more protein and vitamins than chicken eggs, very often people who suffer allergic reactions to chicken eggs are ably to eat duck eggs.Ducks keep themselves clean by regularly preening themselves. #longdownactivityfarm #newforest # @followers @@louosbornephotography
