🐾 Crate Training Your Puppy: A Guide to Success! 🐾

Crate training can be a game-changer for raising a happy and well-adjusted pup! It's not about punishment but creating a *safe, cozy spot* your puppy loves. Here's how to get started:

🦴 Set Up the Perfect Crate:
Include a comfy bed, safe chew toys, a blanket, and water. Make it their own little paradise.

✨ Be the Crate Fairy!
Secretly hide treats in the crate when your puppy isn’t looking. They'll discover goodies and associate the crate with fun surprises!

🎯 Positive Associations Only:
Gently encourage them to explore the crate with treats and praise. Let them go in and out freely—no pressure, no locking the door just yet.

⏳ Take Baby Steps:
Once they're comfy, gradually increase the time they spend in the crate with the door closed (but never force it!). Reward calm behavior with treats and praise.

Help! I don't have time to train my puppy! 🐶

We all think we'll have enough time, but life has a way of getting in the way. Adding a new puppy into the mix of work, family, and general life obligations can be overwhelming. At Goodall Dog Training, we hear you!

A puppy needs your love and attention for over a decade, so let's figure out how to work this into your schedule. Here are the two biggest tips to take some pressure off yourself right from the start:

1. Manage Your Expectations.

You'll feel pressure from all sides—friends, family, society, and yourself. Remember, it's okay to take it slow. Have your puppy sleep upstairs with you to build their confidence before leaving them alone at night. Take a few weeks off if possible and set up a support network. Accept that progress happens at your puppy's pace, not on a predetermined timeline.

2. Prioritise.

What are the two most important things to focus on with a new puppy? Socialisation and Toilet Training.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑Socialisation: Ensuring your puppy feels comfortable with the world around them is crucial in the early days. Basic commands like sit and stay can be taught later. Getting socialisation right sets your dog up for happiness and contentment as they grow.

🚽Toilet Training: Establishing a routine and learning your puppy's subtle signals for needing to go out will make both of you happier quickly.

If your puppy is biting on the lead when out on walks its likely they're overwhelmed or worried about the walk 🐶💤 Here are some things to consider:

🤔 Is the environment too exciting, busy, or scary? Think about school runs, busy roads, or crowded parks.
🤔 Are your walks too long for their little legs? Puppies have limited stamina and can easily get exhausted.
🤔 Is something stressful happening during or before the walk? Maybe someone is winding them up, or they had a big adventure the day before and are still tired.
🤔 Has something stressful happened recently on the walk or beforehand that could be affecting them?

When this happens, it’s best to head home, let them rest, and take it easier for the next few days. 🏡🛏️ Overstimulation can be tough on puppies, so giving them plenty of downtime is crucial.

HELP! MY PUPPY KEEPS PICKING THINGS UP ON WALKS! 🐶🚶‍♂️

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so it’s completely normal for them to pick up random things during walks. But what should you do when this happens? While it's tempting to immediately remove objects from their mouths, this can actually make the items more appealing to them and lead to guarding behavior. 🚫

Instead, if the item isn't harmful, try ignoring it. Puppies usually lose interest quickly and will drop it on their own. For dangerous items, gently swap it out with a toy or treat rather than grabbing it directly from their mouth. 🧸🍖 This approach teaches them to trade rather than guard objects.

🐾 Why Is Your Puppy Crying at Night? 🐾

Is your puppy crying at night and keeping you both awake? It’s a common issue, but understanding why can help ease those nighttime woes for both of you. Here are some reasons why your puppy might be crying at night:

1. New Environment: Puppies have just left their siblings and mother. It can be scary to be alone for the first time. 🥺
2. Social Creatures: Dogs are naturally social and enjoy sleeping with company. Being alone can make them feel insecure. 🐾
3. Too Young to Be Alone: In the wild, dogs don’t start leaving their families until about 6 months. Your puppy is still too young to sleep alone. 🌙

What You Can Do:
- Sleep Nearby: Let your puppy sleep next to you or even with you if needed. This provides comfort and reassurance. 🛏️
- Use a Crate: Place a crate next to your bed where your puppy can see you and feel your presence. You can touch them to reassure them if needed. 🐕
- Night-Time Awareness: You’ll also hear them wake if they need to go to the toilet, making it easier to attend to their needs. 🚽

Important Advice:
Don’t fall into the trap of letting your puppy "cry it out". While they might eventually go quiet, it’s not because they’ve learned to be okay alone. They’ve simply learned that when they’re scared, no one will help them. This can be neurologically damaging and can lead to adult dogs who are more fearful, less trainable, and more anxious. 😔

Going to your puppy when they cry won’t make them cry more. Quite the opposite! Reassuring your puppy when they cry teaches them that you’re there if they need you, building a more confident and secure dog. 💖

🐾🌿 HELP! My Dog Keeps Digging Up My Garden! 🌿🐾

Does your dog love to dig? 🐶⛏️ It’s a totally normal dog behavior, but it can be super frustrating when your garden is getting destroyed and your pup is trailing mud into the house all day! 🏡🛑 If you’ve got yourself a digger, here are a few things to consider:

- 🤔 Are they bored? Do they need more exercise or enrichment opportunities?
- 🕒 Are they spending too much time outside alone?
- 🐾 Are there small animals in your garden they’re trying to get to?
- 🚪 Are they trying to escape the garden or get to something in a neighboring garden?
- 🛏️ Are they trying to make a comfy den or find a cool spot?

If any of these ring true, here are some things you can try to help your pup:
- 🏃‍♂️ More exercise or switching up walks to new locations
- 🐕‍🦺 More off-lead time where safe
- 🚶‍♂️ Reducing the amount of time they spend outside alone
- 🏖️ Providing a comfy spot with shelter or shade if they do need to be outside
- 🔍 If they’re trying to escape, figure out why. Is there something scary or exciting outside? Make the garden a more valuable place to stay!

✨ Top Tip: For dogs who LOVE to dig, create a designated digging spot! You could section off part of the garden or even give them a sandpit just for them. 🏖️🎾 Mark it clearly, and when they start digging elsewhere, gently redirect them to their "legal" digging spot. You can even hide toys or treats there for extra fun! 🎁🐾

Your garden will thank you, and so will your happy digger! 🌸🐶💚

🚨 HELP! I don’t know what equipment I should use for walking my puppy! 🚨

We often get asked what equipment to use when walking a puppy!

For us here at GDT HQ, this is a no-brainer. A well-fitting harness can save your puppy from discomfort, or even damage, to their neck and spine. 🐶❤️ The dog’s neck is full of important physiological features that make it a sensitive area, including:

• Trachea - Windpipe for breathing
• Oesophagus – Food pipe
• Epiglottis – System to make sure food goes down the right hole
• Larynx – Voice Box
• Lymph Nodes - crucial for the immune system
• Veins & Arteries – Supplying blood
• Thyroid Gland – Controlling the metabolic rate

One of the bigger risks is Tracheal Collapse. This can occur in all breeds but is more common in smaller breeds. Signs include coughing (honking), less tolerance to exercise, and breathing difficulties.

Studies have also shown a link between collar pressure and eye problems, like intraocular pressure (IOP), which is a high-risk factor for issues like glaucoma.

For us, a harness is an essential piece of equipment. Here are some tips for choosing a harness:

• The harness should be Y-shaped at the front.
• The harness should leave the neck clear and sit below the neck (sternum).
• The harness should have a back attachment for the lead (many have two points of attachment: one on the front and the back).
• The harness should have some space behind the front legs to limit chafing while the puppy walks/runs.
• The harness should allow free movement of the shoulders.

Many harnesses advertise as being “anti-pull.” We would avoid these as they often work by causing the dog discomfort or by pulling the body out of alignment.

There are some issues to consider even with harnesses, such as: Does the dog find it more comfortable to pull in a harness? Does the harness affect the dog's gait? Does the harness cause too much weight-bearing on one side? These are all possibilities, but when weighing up the damage a collar can do (even in a short amount of time), a well-fitted harness will always trump walking on a collar alone.

Help! I don’t know how to socialize my puppy properly 🐶

Bringing a new puppy home is super exciting 🎉, but socializing them can be a bit overwhelming! You might be wondering, "Where do I even start?" 🤔 The key is to make your puppy feel safe, confident, and ready to explore the world 🌍.

Why Socialization Matters 🐾

Socialization means introducing your puppy to different experiences, people, places, and sounds. It helps them grow into a confident and happy adult dog 🐕. A well-socialized puppy is less likely to develop fear or aggression issues, making them a great companion for life ❤️.

How to Socialize Your Puppy

Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started:

1. **Introduce New Sights, Sounds, and Smells** 👀👂👃
- **At Home:** Play different sounds like traffic or thunder (YouTube is great for this!) while you play with your pup. Keep it fun and rewarding with treats 🦴.
- **Outside:** Take your puppy for car rides 🚗 to see the world. Let them safely watch from your lap as they hear and see new things, giving lots of praise 🥰.

2. **Meet People and Other Dogs** 👫🐕
- Arrange safe, controlled meet-ups with calm, friendly dogs. Avoid busy dog parks at first—one-on-one interactions are best!
- Introduce your puppy to different people: kids, adults, people with hats or glasses 👓. Give treats to make these new faces a positive experience 🍖.

3. **Get Comfortable with Handling and Grooming** ✂️🧴
- Touch your puppy's paws, ears, and tail gently, giving treats to create a positive association 🐾.
- Let them sniff grooming tools like brushes or nail clippers. Gradually start grooming sessions with lots of praise and treats 🛁.

4. **Get Used to Equipment** 🦮
- Let your puppy sniff their collar and harness before putting them on. Reward them for wearing it even for a few seconds. Gradually increase the time before taking them for a walk 🚶‍♂️.

5. **Practice Alone Time** 🏡
- Start with short absences. Leave your puppy with a chew toy or puzzle feeder while you step out of the room. Gradually increase the time you’re away to help them adjust 💪.

6. **Build Confidence with Games and Training** 🎾
- Teach simple commands like "sit" and "stay" using treats as rewards 🥳. Keep sessions short and fun!
- Play sniffing games by hiding treats around the house. This helps them use their nose and boosts their confidence 🐽.

7. **Prepare for Vet Visits** 🩺
- Practice at home by gently touching your puppy’s ears, paws, and belly. This helps them get used to being handled during exams.
- Reward them with treats for staying calm when you simulate the feel of a vet’s touch using a towel or soft cloth 🏥.

8. **Learn to Read Your Puppy’s Body Language** 🐶💬
- A wagging tail and playful behavior mean a happy pup. Signs like yawning, lip licking, or cowering can mean they're stressed or scared 😟. Pay attention and adjust your approach if they seem uncomfortable.

Building a strong bond with your puppy is all about creating a safe, fun, and positive environment. Here are some essential tips to help you and your new best friend start off right:

1. 🏠 Prioritize Their Feelings: Focus on how your puppy feels, not just what they do. Make them feel secure by comforting them when they’re worried, giving them a safe space at home, and being with them when they’re anxious.

2. 🍖 Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your pup with treats, toys, and playtime when they’re doing well. Positive training helps them learn while strengthening your connection!

🎆🐾 Helping Your Puppy Through Fireworks this New Years 🐾🎆

Fireworks can be a scary time for both puppies and adult dogs. Here are some tips to help prepare your pup and make the experience as comfortable as possible:

1. Create a safe space: Provide your pup with a safe retreat, but also allow them to find their own safe space if needed. Don’t try to coax them out—let them come to you when they’re ready. 🏡❤️

2. Drown out the noise: Close all windows and curtains, and turn on the TV to help drown out the sound of fireworks. 📺🔇

3. Stay home: Don’t leave your pup alone during the evenings when fireworks are likely. Your presence can be a great comfort! 🐶❤️

4. Schedule walks early: Get your walks and toilet breaks done before it gets dark. This minimizes the chances of your pup getting spooked outside. 🌅🚶‍♂️

5. Be prepared for accidents: Accidents can happen, and that’s okay! It’s better to have a small setback in toilet training than risk a fright from a sudden firework while they’re outside. 🏠💦

6. Use a lead for toilet breaks: Always take your pup out on a lead during this time, just in case they get spooked and try to bolt. 🦮⚠️

7. Prepare tasty distractions: Have some tasty treats and enrichment activities ready to keep your pup busy during the fireworks. Think licky mats, stuffed Kongs, or snuffle boxes! 🍖🧩
