A bored dog can quickly turn into a mischievous dog! Keeping your pup mentally and physically stimulated is key to preventing unwanted behaviors and making sure they live a fulfilled life. Here are some easy ways to relieve boredom:

🏃‍♂️ Exercise & Off-Lead Time – Make sure your pup gets plenty of walks and, where safe, some off-lead time to sniff, explore, and run freely.

🐾 Teaching Your Puppy to Walk on a Lead! 🐕✨

Learning to walk on a lead can be a big challenge for puppies, especially if it's something they've never experienced before. Imagine spending the first weeks of your life moving freely and suddenly being tethered by an unknown force… confusing, right?

Walking on a lead isn’t something puppies naturally know how to do—it’s a skill we need to teach them. With patience, practice, and positivity, your puppy will learn to walk calmly by your side. 🐾❤️

Here are our top tips to get you started:

🎯 Introduce the lead early
As soon as your puppy comes home, clip the lead onto their collar or harness. Apply VERY gentle pressure, and when they feel it, reward them with a treat! This shows them the lead isn’t scary and encourages them to move closer when they feel pressure, which helps reduce pulling.

📏 Use a long lead
Start with a lead that’s at least 2m long (even better, a 5m long line for safe areas!). This gives your puppy the freedom to explore without hitting the end of the lead too often. Save the shorter leads for practicing loose lead walking later on.

👀 Reward eye contact
When your puppy looks up at you with those adorable eyes, reward them! 🐶 Treats for eye contact lay the foundation for loose lead walking and help your pup stay connected with you during walks.

🏡 Start in low-distraction areas
Begin indoors or in your garden before heading out into the big, distracting world. Mastering lead walking in a quiet environment first will set you and your pup up for success!

⏳ Be patient
Loose lead walking takes time, especially for some dogs. Go at your puppy’s pace and allow plenty of freedom while working on this skill. Progress might feel slow, but with consistency, you’ll get there!

🐾 Help! My Training is Regressing! 🐾

Noticing a backslide in your puppy or dog’s training? Don’t worry—this is totally normal, and there are lots of reasons it might be happening. Here’s what to check and adjust so you can get back on track! 👇

1. 🐕 What Stage of Life Are They In? If your pup is still young or hitting adolescence, big changes in their body and brain can affect their ability to learn and remember. Go back to basics for now, and remember—this phase doesn’t last forever!

2. 😨 Did Something Scare Them? If your dog recently had a fright, they may be more cautious in certain situations, including training. Try stepping back a level and focus on making training a positive experience to rebuild their confidence.

3. 🩺 Could They Be in Pain? Sometimes pain or discomfort can affect your dog’s training abilities. If you’re unsure, a vet check can help rule out any medical issues that could be causing setbacks.

4. 🍗 Are They Motivated? Treats that worked before might not be as exciting now! As puppies grow, they often need a little extra motivation. Try using higher-value treats like chicken, cheese, or something new and tasty to keep their focus.

🐶 Prevention, Management & Setting Up for Success 🏡✨

"Prevention is one of the greatest tools in force-free training. When something goes wrong, don’t ask yourself how you can punish your animal. Ask yourself, ‘How can I prevent this in the future?’" – Luna C. Lupus

This quote perfectly sums up why prevention and management are so important in dog training! It’s easy to feel like setting your dog up for success is “cheating” or “lazy,” but in reality, it’s the best way to teach them how to behave while keeping life stress-free for both of you.

Dogs don’t see things as “wrong” the way we do. If they jump up on the counter and find a tasty leftover, that was a win for them! If they jump on a guest and get attention, even negative attention, they’ve still been rewarded. Instead of punishing unwanted behaviors, focus on preventing them and teaching better alternatives.

Here’s how you can set your dog up for success:

🐾 Keep kitchen counters clear so there’s nothing tempting to grab
🐾 Supervise your dog when they’re in areas where they might get into trouble
🐾 Use baby gates, pens, or closed doors to prevent access when you can’t supervise
🐾 Train an alternative behavior, like lying on a mat in the kitchen, for a positive replacement
🐾 Pick your battles! If management alone solves the problem, training may not even be needed

This mindset shift can make life so much easier! Try applying it to other common issues:

🗑️ Dog stealing from the bin? Move it somewhere they can’t reach
🏞️ Dog running off at the park? Use a harness and long line while training a solid recall
🧹 Dog scared of the hoover? Put them in another room or take them out while you clean

🐾 How to Get Your Puppy to Love Their Crate or Pen 🏡💖

Helping your puppy feel safe and happy in their crate or pen takes time, but with the right approach, it can become their favorite cozy space!

🛑 Don’t shut them in too early – Rushing this process can make your puppy feel trapped and anxious. If they cry or try to escape, slow down. Build up to closing the door gradually over a few weeks.

🧚‍♂️ Become the Pen Fairy – Randomly drop tasty treats and chews into the crate or pen throughout the day for your puppy to discover. This helps them see it as a fun and rewarding place to be!

🐶 What Not to Do When Your Puppy Bites 🐾

Puppy biting is completely normal, but how you respond makes all the difference! Here’s what *not* to do when those sharp little teeth come out:

🚫 Avoid waving your fingers in your puppy’s face – This makes your hands look like fun toys and encourages biting!
🚫 Don’t “yelp” like a puppy – Your pup knows you’re not a dog, and this can turn you into a human squeaky toy!
🚫 Never shout or hold your puppy’s mouth shut – This can harm your bond and make your puppy fearful.

✅ What to do instead:

✔️ Always have a toy in your hand when playing to redirect biting.
✔️ If your puppy bites, calmly remove your hand and offer a toy instead.

HELP! MY PUPPY KEEPS PICKING THINGS UP ON WALKS! 🐶🚶‍♂️

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so it’s completely normal for them to pick up random things during walks. But what should you do when this happens? While it's tempting to immediately remove objects from their mouths, this can actually make the items more appealing to them and lead to guarding behavior. 🚫

Instead, if the item isn't harmful, try ignoring it. Puppies usually lose interest quickly and will drop it on their own. For dangerous items, gently swap it out with a toy or treat rather than grabbing it directly from their mouth. 🧸🍖 This approach teaches them to trade rather than guard objects.
