Flooding. After a good amount of time spraying down the substrate and wood, we slowly started to add some water. The wood is going to be water logged in situ, so we are expecting some movement, but also we are looking forward to the tannins that will leech from the wood for the first time. This slow process will allow you to study the ecosystem you are building. Watch as things float and then sink. Study the life that undoubtedly starts appearing in among the leaf litter, and more importantly, learn patience. There is no need to rush, cut corners, or use hacks. Sit back and enjoy it.

On the surface. Our home Fluval Evo aquarium is begun to be flooded slowly. This setup has a full floor of our very own Benthic Zone Substrate. We are going with a dry start on this with regards to the botanicals to see how it settles after it becomes water logged. After some days of spraying, we've added some water directly into the back chambers so as not to disturb it too much. We are already seeing biofilm on the leaf litter and a nice colour to the water.

Time and patience are something that you learn when running a botanical method aquarium. You have to have it or at least to learn it because otherwise you won't be able to appreciate and witness nature right before your eyes. The beauty in the petina of leaves, seed pods, or wood is something that you can only experience running an aquarium this way. Wait and watch. Learn and enjoy.
