To kick off the new year we are focusing on a very important part of a botanical based habitat, the substrate. We offer two different forms of Cocos material, chunky and fine which not only provide a great environment for microfauna but giving a lovely rich reddish tint to your water. Also back is our very own Benthic Zone substrate, this is a mix of various botanical material to recreate the bottom layer of a river bed or lake. We added some glowlight rasboras into our Dennerle scapers tank today, but while they were settling down, we noticed the Yellow Sakura shrimp finally making an appearance after a few weeks of hiding. A nice way to finish the year with some new fish. 2024 has been an amazing year, and as we roll into our 8th year of business, we are getting excited by what 2025 will bring. Along with our usual expansion of our stock, we are looking to add another of our very own substrates. There is a good chance we will be adding some new packs to our existing ones too. New packaging is a maybe as well. The biggest plan is to start shipping outside the UK. When we first started, we worked closely with Tannin Aquatics and had a rule together that we did the UK and they did the world. Now that things have changed their end, we will be expanding into worldwide customers. It's been a question I've been asked most over the years with so many enquiries from overseas. 2025 will see this come together. Look out for more content on our YouTube and Tiktok channels, too. Creating a botanical based habitat will enrich the lives of your fish for various reasons. This has been discussed and proven many times before. This is also relevant if you keep shrimp, they will have a constant supply of food to graze on. Just look at the condition of this Red Cherry Shrimp in our shallow aquarium. Bright, berried and beautiful!

Flooding. After a good amount of time spraying down the substrate and wood, we slowly started to add some water. The wood is going to be water logged in situ, so we are expecting some movement, but also we are looking forward to the tannins that will leech from the wood for the first time. This slow process will allow you to study the ecosystem you are building. Watch as things float and then sink. Study the life that undoubtedly starts appearing in among the leaf litter, and more importantly, learn patience. There is no need to rush, cut corners, or use hacks. Sit back and enjoy it.

On the surface. Our home Fluval Evo aquarium is begun to be flooded slowly. This setup has a full floor of our very own Benthic Zone Substrate. We are going with a dry start on this with regards to the botanicals to see how it settles after it becomes water logged. After some days of spraying, we've added some water directly into the back chambers so as not to disturb it too much. We are already seeing biofilm on the leaf litter and a nice colour to the water.
