We receive many reports about the welfare of animals over the summer months, but we can all do our bit to help our furry, feathered and scaly friends when the weather is warm 🌞

Have you heard of leptospirosis? 😧

Leptospirosis, often shortened to lepto, is a disease caused by bacteria that damage vital organs, such as the liver and kidneys. It’s very serious and often fatal in dogs.

Dogs can catch leptospirosis from:

- Another infected dog
- Sniffing/licking the ground where an infected dog has urinated
- Urine from an infected cow, pig or rodent
- Infected wet ground or fresh water - lepto can live in wet ground and fresh water for several months

Leptospirosis can also be spread to other dogs by infected dogs, mice, rats and cows but can also be caught from infected water. So, if your dog lives on a farm, kills rodents or spends a lot of time swimming, they’re at a much higher risk of catching it ⚠️

There are a few different types of leptospirosis bacteria and each one is slightly different. Fortunately, we can vaccinate against the types of lepto bacteria commonly found in the UK. Find out more: http://pdsa.me/rwlP

A few pooches having a teefys clean this week. All had one session and had these results🥰
It really is so important to keep ontop of our pets dental hygiene. We all know what it’s like to have a tooth ache or sore gums. This is a huge preventative 🫶🏼

THE NEW COST OF VETERINARY CARE
(sorry for such a long post again). (Post originally written by Second Chance Portsmouth Cats)

Without doubt advancements in medical care for our pets has brought a great many benefits as well as a big increase in the options available to vets and owners. Most veterinary practices now have access to 24 hour care, a wide range of equipment such as Ultrasound, MRI and CT scanners plus the option to recommend consultants for most conditions, everything from oncology to orthopaedics.

Health care for our pets is beginning to resemble our own but without the back up of the NHS and all this advancement in technology and equipment can bring concerns for pet owners mainly in the form of rapidly rising costs but also, on occasion, ethical concerns too.

The majority of veterinary practices are now in corporate ownership. This has introduced many new pressures on vets who are often given “incentives” of one sort or another to carry out extra tests and treatments, driving those costs up further and potentially compromising the quality of care.

Pet owners are increasingly finding themselves being put into heartbreaking dilemmas. In order to relieve their pets suffering they are forced to choose between going into debt for expensive treatments or euthanasia.

As most of us have little or no medical knowledge we have to trust the advice given to us is in the best interest of our pets. But is the recommended treatment going to give our pets the opportunity of a better quality of life or is it just in the corporate’s best business interests?

Recently the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) confirmed it is proceeding with a formal investigation into the veterinary services market for household pets acknowledging that urgent reform is needed. However this is going to take at least 18 months and possibly longer to complete.

The wellbeing of our pets is increasingly in the hands of large corporations and equity firms who are not known for their compassion so we feel we need to strongly suggest owners give themselves some form of financial backup. An insurance policy can start from as little as £5-£10 a month for a kitten or puppy, but they will not be small for very long and this will quickly double, triple or even ten-fold or more for older pets or more comprehensive plans. If this is not a viable option, especially if you have more than one pet, then making regular affordable deposits into an account reserved exclusively for a veterinary emergency is a very good alternative.

It’s not only your pet’s welfare but your own conscience that could be at stake.

Kennel cough is a common airway infection that causes a nasty cough amongst dogs. As a dog owner, it's important to be aware of kennel cough, and spot the signs as early as possible to avoid spreading it to other dogs that yours may come into contact with 🦠

Most dogs with kennel cough can be treated at home without medication and recover within one to three weeks. However, if your dog has a severe cough or appears unwell, your vet may recommend medication.

Read our vet-approved advice on caring for dogs with kennel cough and how to prevent it: http://pdsa.me/3ER1

[Visual description: An infographic with a white background and a pink border that includes an image of a Labrador coughing with animated germs coming out of its mouth. The text reads: Kennel cough is an airway infection that causes a dry hacking cough in dogs. Similar to human colds, kennel cough can be caused by a number of different germs (viruses and bacteria). It’s most common in areas where lots of different dogs gather (such as kennels, dog shows and doggy day care) and can survive in the environment for several weeks. Symptoms of kennel cough usually take three to 14 days to develop and then last for one to three weeks. Hacking cough, reduced appetite, low energy, a high temperature. There are many different conditions that can cause coughing so it’s a good idea to have your dog checked by your vet if they have a severe cough or have been coughing for more than a few days.]

Hi everyone sorry for the long post but just trying to avoid a complaint from one of my neighbours. I just want to make you all aware about the parking round here, now I appreciate you don’t live here and you’re not to know but one neighbour in particular seems to think you should know how to park here😮‍💨without taking the issue up with me first and giving me chance to contact you all, he feels the need to shout at my customers and follow them to their car commenting on how they should park!! Now I like to spend most of my day dog grooming and not sitting on the pavement watching how people park their cars, but if you do park in the layby straight ahead of you when you drive into Torridge Gardens, Please please can you make sure that you drive/reverse straight in,please do not park long ways or at an angle (which I know is the normal way to park in a layby). Because there are so many cars in this road now the residents park next to each other as you would in a car park so we can get 6 /7 cars in there instead of just a few, it’s very embarrassing for me to know that this is how some people feel it’s acceptable to behave, but as you know I do my absolute upmost to respect all of my neighbours.
I completely understand it is frustrating if there is nowhere to park when my neighbours need to but not everyone would expect to park this way! So many people use this road to park, many of them leave their cars here and go round to Haskins or go into town since tesco car park now has a time limit, so the road isn’t just used by my customers, however this man feels the need to target mine. So embarrassed that I have to say this, just doing all I can to keep everyone happy.🐾 TIA

🪿🦆DO NOT FEED BREAD TO DUCKS & GEESE 😭 🦆🪿 Feeding bread causes permanent damage to ducks and geese. They develop angel wing. They can not migrate or fly to avoid predators. PLEASE DO NOT FEED BREAD to ducks and geese. Cracked corn, corn, peas, mealworms, romaine lettuce, watermelon, grapes CUT into pieces, cantaloupe……are a few good options!
