Throwback to this little cutie who was rushed in as an emergency back in summer after he almost definitely ingested some kind of poison โ€ผ๏ธ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›โš ๏ธ๐Ÿฉบ

He arrived to the practice almost comatose and unresponsive, extremely cold and pale ๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿค’ He was not microchipped, no collar and without knowing what he had ingested it was difficult for our team to know how to treat him and what to do, and at one point he was so poorly at euthanasia was considered for welfare reasons โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

Thanks to the teams amazing effort somehow this little boy made a miraculous recovery over the next few days -and became quite the chatterbox (also winning over the team ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿฅฐ)

His story is a scary example of how our fur babies can be so ill after ingesting things they shouldnโ€™t- and without knowing the cause makes it even more difficult to treat ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿฉป๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’‰

Over the Christmas period we see a huge rise in cases of toxin ingestion and itโ€™s so important to treat these cases as soon as possible, it is also especially helpful if you know what they have eaten ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿพ

With the Christmas spirit in full swing, Christopher Carter Vets are putting together a package for some of our furry friends who are without a home over Christmas ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿถ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿผ๐Ÿฑ

We work very closely with the Blue Cross Southampton providing veterinary care to their residents- and occasionally taking some cuties home. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’“ We would just love to give those patients who are without families an extra special Christmas ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿพ

Just like humans, it is important to look after our fur babies teeth from a young age in order to try and prevent the need for lengthy dental surgery ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿฉป

Little storm here had a full scale and polish, once cleaned it was apparent some of her teeth were just in too poor of a condition to keep and she had three extracted โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน We are happy to report she is now home, recovered and back to her normal self ๐Ÿˆ

Though some animals and breeds are more prone to bad teeth it is important we do all that we can to keep them happy and healthy ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’“

Though useful, supplemental products such as dental bones and chews will never beat actively brushing your pets teethโ•

We have had a young female dog handed in to the practice this morning. She was found wandering in the general hospital. She is unfortunately not microchipped and doesn't have a tag on her collar. Please call us if you believe she may be yours or you have any information.

Hammy belongs to one of our amazing vets, and this year has settled in nicely with the routine of being a Carters staff dog ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฉต

As you can see Hammy has a lovely den which is prefect for bonfire night. A den should be made in an area of the house that is safe and ideally away from the loud sounds of fireworks ๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿงจ

Ideally a den should be built in advance so that your pet can get used to the area; soft cosy and comfortable bedding should be used as it allows for some noise to be absorbed and allows for pets to dog and burrow ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ›Œ

Adding your petโ€™s favourite toys, chews and snacks can help distract from the fireworks- things like lick mats can be made in advanced and frozen to keep your pets entertained for even longer! ๐ŸŽพ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿฅ’๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ–

All pheromone and nutraceutical products shown here can be purchased over the counter from the practice or sometimes can be found online and in pet stores ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿจ

Pet remedy, Adaptil, Feliway and Calmex should be used in and around the areas of your den- and again ideally strayed a couple days before the stressful events ๐ŸŽŠ๐Ÿฉ

Though sheโ€™s already very happy and settled into her new home, when she came into see us she was quite nervous ๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿค๐Ÿ™ˆ

Puppies like Rue need to be properly socialised to all aspects of life outside home- especially the veterinary practice, so that they later donโ€™t develop phobias or fear related aggression ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿฉป๐Ÿก

It can be the simplest things that overwhelm our furry friends especially when theyโ€™ve never seen something before; public transport, festive decorations, busy traffic, facial hair, the vets, umbrellas, fireworks and accessibility aids are all things that animals can develop phobias to if they donโ€™t experience them during socialisation. ๐Ÿš•๐ŸŒ‚๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ‡

A puppy socialising with other dogs can only be done once they are fully vaccinated, but exposure to the outside world can always be started at home via videos to get them used to โ€˜scaryโ€™ sounds like fireworks and busy traffic / loud sounds ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿš™๐ŸŽง๐Ÿฅ

Between 3-12 weeks is the peak socialising period, as you wonโ€™t be able to get your puppy until they are 8 weeks a good breeder will have already started this process for you. The first year in a puppies life can really help to influence how a puppy feels about people, dogs, other animals and a variety of situations. ๐Ÿพโฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

Little Annie was an angel when she came in for her 2nd vaccinations- so much so the staff couldnโ€™t help themselves taking her upstairs for all the extra cuddles ๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿฅฐ

Though extremely cute lil pups like Annie can find their way into all kinds of mischief- especially if they think itโ€™s a snack!! ๐Ÿ™Š Puppies like toddlers like to explore the world with their mouths; they chew on anything and will often eat things theyโ€™re not supposed to ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Itโ€™s always important to keep a close eye on your little ones, and to never leave them alone where they may be able to access food or small objects without your knowledge ๐Ÿพ

Not only can eating unknown items make them poorly if toxic- but left underrated foreign objects can get stuck inside the bowels and require an operation to remove them. ๐Ÿฉป๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿ’‰โœ‚๏ธ๐Ÿฉบ

If you are ever concerned that your pet might have eaten something theyโ€™re not supposed to please ring your veterinarian ASAP โ˜Ž๏ธโš ๏ธ

Proper socialisation of your pets to the practice when theyโ€™re young, is key in preventing fear related issues in the future ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ˜…โ€ฆโ€ฆ.. with young dogs like Fraser some tasty treats always helps ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ—

Once they have had their 2nd vaccination puppies can do out on walks and start to meet new dogs- though they should avoid areas of stagnant water for a further 4 weeks ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

It is important to note what without this 2nd vaccination puppies are not fully vaccinated and so not protected against various deadly diseases โ€ผ๏ธโš ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธโš ๏ธ
