Little Fraser came in to see us today for his 2nd vaccine and was an absolute superstar ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฅฐ

Proper socialisation of your pets to the practice when theyโ€™re young, is key in preventing fear related issues in the future ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ˜…โ€ฆโ€ฆ.. with young dogs like Fraser some tasty treats always helps ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ—

Once they have had their 2nd vaccination puppies can do out on walks and start to meet new dogs- though they should avoid areas of stagnant water for a further 4 weeks ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

It is important to note what without this 2nd vaccination puppies are not fully vaccinated and so not protected against various deadly diseases โ€ผ๏ธโš ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธโš ๏ธ

For any questions regarding your pets vaccination please contact your veterinary surgery ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ“ž

With the warmer weather upon us once more, it is time for a friendly reminder to take care in the heat. โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅโ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The temperature this year has rapidly increased, so while it is not extremely warm yet, be mindful that humans and animals are not used to the increased temperature - animals can take up to 2 months to acclimatise to the heat. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Please ensure there is always fresh water available and that your pets are NEVER left unattended in a warm area at home or in a hot car! โŒ๐ŸงŠ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ง

10am-5pm is usually the hottest time of the day so please do not walk your dogs in the sun between those hours ๐Ÿฆฎ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

We are already seeing some heartbreaking cases of heatstroke so please be aware of symptoms to be concerned about:
โ€ข Excessive panting and drooling
โ€ข Difficulty/noisy breathing
โ€ข Reddish gums/tongue
โ€ข Unable to stand
โ€ข Restlessness and thirst
โ€ข Tremors or seizures
โ€ข Vomiting
โ€ข Uncoordination/drowsiness

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, seek veterinary treatment ASAP as early intervention is essential in heatstroke cases ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Did you know that February is dental awareness monthโ“๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿ˜

Yes, brushing pets teeth really is the best thing to combat dental disease and bad breath!! ๐Ÿ‘…๐Ÿชฅ

Okayyyy maybe brushing your petโ€™s teeth isnโ€™t always possible, but there are a variety of products to help combat dental disease and bad breath with our furry friends ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿชฅ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ‘€

Top tips:
๐Ÿ“ Be patient- the process of getting your pet used to dental cleaning takes as long as it takes, rushing any step may cause aversions toward you touching their mouth and in severe cases aggression!

๐Ÿ“ Praise, praise, praise- positive reinforcement will allow your pets to be more receptive to the unfamiliar experience.

๐Ÿ“ Start slowly- use a small amount of the products on our fingers and gradually increase to the recommended amount, this will allow your pet to get used to the taste and experience.

๐Ÿ“ ONLY pet toothpaste- human toothpaste contains fluoride that can upset our furry friendsโ€™ stomachs and cause them to fall ill.

Ideally the earlier the better when starting to brush your petโ€™s teeth, socialising puppies and kittens to a dental care routine will make it much easier in the future- but itโ€™s never too late! Research shows that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop periodontal disease by the age of 3!! ๐Ÿชฅโ€ผ๏ธ

Any questions please contact your veterinary surgery โ˜Ž๏ธ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€โš•๏ธ

18/01/2024

New legislation from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has changed the way in which medications and treatments are dispensed from the beginning of this year (2024).๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿถ The updates now mean that in order to prescribe medications veterinary surgeons need to carry out a clinical assessment and physical exam. ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿพ

This includes flea and worming prescriptions, so your pet might need to be seen before receiving treatment. ๐Ÿชฐ๐Ÿชฑ๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿ›

If you have any questions please call your veterinary surgey โ˜Ž๏ธ

*** Just to clarify, once a clinical exam has been performed and the medication authorised the treatment will be available for the authorised time period. This may be available for up to a year for parasite treatment but may not be possible with prescription drugs such as antibiotics or pain relief (as they may not be regular treatments). ***

Meet Smudge, an active and typically full of beans 3 year old Cocker Spaniel ๐Ÿถ He had always been a happy and healthy boy so when he went off his food and become lethargic, his owners were immediately concerned. After a few days of him refusing food, Smudgeโ€™s owners Thomas and Stephanie sought veterinary advice and were told to bring him in straight away.

It was discovered that Smudgeโ€™s red blood cell count had dropped to just 10%. In a healthy dog, it should be around 45%. This is caused by a condition called IMHA where the body attacks its own red blood cells, something that is sadly all too common for dogs โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

When a dogโ€™s blood cell count gets so dangerously low, a blood transfusion is the best treatment ๐Ÿฉธ Smudge was given one and then a further two transfusions which boosted his red cells and gave time for his medication to kick in. The transfusions were a success and together with his other treatment, Smudge has made a full recovery ๐Ÿ™Œโค๏ธ
