We love working with people and dogs www.thefamilydogclub.co.uk

A family run business, Gavin and Jeanette, we are both fully qualified dog trainers, and Jeanette a behaviourist, we only use kind, reward based methods to train dogs. Helping you to enjoy your dogs is what our job is all about. We work with both owners and dogs to resolve and understand any behavioural issues they may have, to help

them feel more confident and secure and to give owners the confidence they need to train their dogs. Training dogs isn’t all about obedience, its about having a strong relationship with your dog whereby they want to work with you. We are all about having fun, and want owners to enjoy the experience as much as the dogs too. We work with a wide range of dogs and issues owners are having. We also train a lot of dogs for fun, to give them enriched lives, and in turn their owners. Behaviour Consultations are required when we need to change the behaviour of the dog and when we need to work in conjunction with a vet to look at various options of diet changes, herbal medicines, or in some cases pharmacology, to help improve the dogs life. We put some management practices in place along with a training plan, we will also look to have regular catch ups to discuss their progress, as well as on-going support.

1-2-1 Consultations -

For Training, Reactive Dogs and dogs that are aroused by the environment we offer 1-2-1 consultations here in our field, we discuss with you what could be going on and look to help you understand your dog in terms of body language, threshold, environments etc. We then work through with you what you are able to do to help your dog and reduce the behaviour or help to build their confidence. We also offer 1/2 hour social sessions with selected dogs to help your dogs to learn how to play confidently and politely with other dogs. We run a number of classes through-out the week, with 3 classes on a Saturday, regular Sunday classes, Monday and Wednesday night classes. Wow very busy puppy natter at Healthy Pet Store, so lovely to meet so many adorable puppies and their owners. No pics from me afraid, too busy chatting

Our puppy class in November is available to book now, link in the comments.

Please feel free to email or message with any questions.

Enjoy a quiet afternoon 🙂

If you’re coming to Puppy Natter tomorrow, please bring a little mat or bed for your pup to rest on and a chew (there’ll be one free in your puppy pack). Depending on weather and numbers, it might be held outside in the yard area. Chairs will be available.

It’s not too late to join us for Puppy Natter tomorrow! No need to book 🐾

Join us in our Totton store from 10.30am to 11.30am. It’s a great opportunity for new puppy parents to get expert advice from Jeanette at The Family Dog Club Ltd and for your puppy to socialise in new environments, helping them grow into confident adult dogs.

We can’t wait to see you and your pups there! 🐶💬

We are back from our holiday! Had the most amazing time! Few pics for anyone interested

The dogs are not letting us out of their sight, but they have all been well looked after.

Just wanted to say a huge huge thank you to the amazing ladies taking care of the business, the admin, running classes, walking the dogs etc whilst we were gone! We couldn’t have done it without you, thank you 🙏

Can’t wait to get back this week to see everyone in classes and 1-2-1’s.

Jeanette is in Healthy Pet Store this Saturday for puppy natter.

Also thinking of organising a dog training weekend/retreat next year. Need to look for venues, accommodation and not too far from here, but thinking about a retreat where we spend all weekend training and having fun with the dogs, then socialising in the evening. Let us know if you think it would be something you’re interested in ###

Fire works and dogs.

You can desensitise as much as possible your dogs to the sound of fire works, which for many can certainly help.

However if they hear a loud bang as it scares them, they then go into fight/flight/freeze mode, their body prepares them with tonnes of adrenaline and cortisol, exactly the same that happens to us when we are caught off guard or nearly have a car accident.

It takes 72 hours for those chemicals in the body to reduce, but with fire works they don’t get the chance to recover as it’s bang after bang. This then stores in the nervous system. When the environment is similar again, dark nights, smell of gun power etc their nervous system tells them to prepare all over again. Then the bangs happen again and the nervous system is reaffirmed it was right to be scared in that environment, then comes the PTSD from the fire works.

Once your dog has a fear of fire works there is little to no training that can help, unless you were to make sure you worked through the smells, the sights as well as the noises and over a long period of time. Many dogs can cope with the noise on the tv, but once you have the dark night, the loud bangs and smell of gun powder the nervous system takes over and the body gets ready to fight/flight.

You can make them feel safer by giving them a denned area, having music up, using scent and having them in a raised bed, and/or meds from the vets.

Like us, all dogs are different, if they were a puppy during fire works one year, not in they’re fear period you can habituate them to them, but it doesn’t mean they won’t be caught off guard.

Lots of dogs stay in fight/flight mode now for weeks. They’re more likely to react to noises, and may even try to run away each time they hear an unusual noise, id recommend keeping any dog disturbed by the fire works on leads for a few weeks.

Many of us would just love it to be on one weekend, people can then prepare.

I’ve worked with many whose dogs have been fine for years and then that one year they get caught off guard and it’s horrible from then on. I’ve worked with people who admit they had no idea how bad it can be until they experienced it.

You cannot reinforce fear.

If your dog needs you please be there for them, make sure they have a safe space to go too.

Sadly many dogs go missing this time of year, they go into flight to try and get away.

If your dog is even slightly impacted by the fire works please be aware they will be trigger stacked, even if they seem to be ok, which means that they’re in a heightened state of arousal. When you take them for their walk, they’re more likely to panic and try to run if they hear any loud noises, up to 3/4 days after hearing the first fire works. I highly recommend keeping dogs on longlines during this time, as well as making sure gardens etc are secure. X

One of our most popular services we offer is Recreational Training, whereby your dog/puppy comes and spends wither 1/2 or a full day with us we work through a training/socialising or confidence building plan with them and let you know what we have worked on.
