We love working with people and dogs www.thefamilydogclub.co.uk

A family run business, Gavin and Jeanette, we are both fully qualified dog trainers, and Jeanette a behaviourist, we only use kind, reward based methods to train dogs. Helping you to enjoy your dogs is what our job is all about. We work with both owners and dogs to resolve and understand any behavioural issues they may have, to help

them feel more confident and secure and to give owners the confidence they need to train their dogs. Training dogs isn’t all about obedience, its about having a strong relationship with your dog whereby they want to work with you. We are all about having fun, and want owners to enjoy the experience as much as the dogs too. We work with a wide range of dogs and issues owners are having. We also train a lot of dogs for fun, to give them enriched lives, and in turn their owners. Behaviour Consultations are required when we need to change the behaviour of the dog and when we need to work in conjunction with a vet to look at various options of diet changes, herbal medicines, or in some cases pharmacology, to help improve the dogs life. We put some management practices in place along with a training plan, we will also look to have regular catch ups to discuss their progress, as well as on-going support.

1-2-1 Consultations -

For Training, Reactive Dogs and dogs that are aroused by the environment we offer 1-2-1 consultations here in our field, we discuss with you what could be going on and look to help you understand your dog in terms of body language, threshold, environments etc. We then work through with you what you are able to do to help your dog and reduce the behaviour or help to build their confidence. We also offer 1/2 hour social sessions with selected dogs to help your dogs to learn how to play confidently and politely with other dogs. We run a number of classes through-out the week, with 3 classes on a Saturday, regular Sunday classes, Monday and Wednesday night classes. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and all the dogs have been spoiled!

Remember for many dogs Christmas is a time for huge change, therefore you may see changes in behaviours, the need/want to dog/chew/bark more than usual. They may seem like they have a lot of every and often it’s the opposite.

We’ve noticed it with Missy she’s been a lot less settled in the evenings love her! So plenty of rural sniffing, calm walks and rest are on the cards for her.

We’ve had the most wonderful year with all our lovely clients, whom many we consider to be friends. But I’ll do a proper appreciation post separately as we are so grateful for you all!

Please share pics with us of your dogs over Xmas! We are pretty rubbish ourselves at taking pics 😬

Families welcome.

To us, puppy classes are one of the best investments when you have a young puppy. It’s much more than just training in that we teach you about behaviour, impact of breed, instincts, how to and not to socialise plus much more.

If you’d like to book please send us a message or via our website.

Xmas tips -

Xmas day is so much easier if you plan, especially with a puppy!

I’d recommend planning to have something for them to do whilst you open presents, chew, kong, licky mat.

Then put the paper in a box and put some treats in for them to find.

Have a nice calm walk planned (recommend rural if you want to nicely tire them out)

Have a quiet area for them to rest/sleep, remember tired puppy is like a tired toddler.

And just remember for a few days they may get less rest/sleep than usual so may be more highly aroused, more barky, bitey.

Be careful as lots of things are harmful for dogs, and many end up at the vets Xmas day.

Most importantly enjoy xmas with your dog.

Please be careful driving to classes today, doesn’t matter if you’re late.

I’ll update here if any trees down etc but as of now we haven’t heard anything

With the storm due, highly recommend keeping dogs on long lines for a few days, the storms can disturb our dogs, this can cause them to become trigger stacked, their arousal increases and they’re more likely to chase etc. Also scent travels further in the wind so it’s a different walk for our dogs.

I also highly recommend checking fences etc before letting dogs out x

Classes will go ahead tomorrow as normal, unless we feel it’s too dangerous. But as of now all classes are going ahead.

With puppies we will look to work in the top room and under shelter if possible.

Have a lovely day

As we’re going into winter it’s often harder to walk our dogs. The evenings are dark, it’s colder outside and for many dogs road walking in the dark isn’t a positive experience but is a walk they cope with.

Instead of walking, there are other things you can do with your dog/dogs.

Training - any dog can train

You can work on

Sit/stay
Down
Down/stay
Eye contact
Middle (great for nervous dogs)
Targets (target an item or your hand)
Twist/Spin
Bow
Paws up
Crawl
Teach them to retrieve items by name

And much more. Many videos showing how to teach these but most importantly have fun.

Hide and seek games. You can show your dog you have some food, leave them in one room, go off and hide, call your dog and get someone to let them out to find you.

Chase the food
Grab a bowl of treats
Ask for a sit
Throw the treat, tell them to get it
They come back, mark with a good or yes and throw the food again.

Treat trail
You can lay a trail of food for them to follow

Hide treats in the room, help and encourage them to find the treats

Treats in recycling, give them some treats in a box, tube, egg case and enjoy watching them find the treats.

Scent training if you’ve taught your dog scent work

Gun dog training if they’ve had prior training

Our dogs need our time, for some dogs they’d much rather play/train than walk in the dark, for others that love their walks then it’s all good!
