True healing is not a one-size-fits-all journey.

It's about addressing the root cause, not just masking the symptoms.

Have you ever tried a natural remedy, like applying calendula cream to your dog’s itchy skin, only to find it didn’t “work”?

It’s a frustrating experience, leading many to dismiss holistic approaches altogether and revert to conventional treatments like topical or oral steroids.

But here’s the truth: natural wellness practices are not about quick fixes—it’s about getting to the heart of the matter and rebalancing the whole system.

In the Animal PsychAromatica system, we recognise that symptoms—like itchy skin—as information, not the problem itself. That itch might stem from stress, a poor diet, or an underlying imbalance in the body. Simply soothing the skin without addressing those deeper causes is like sticking duct tape on a broken pipe. The leak will keep coming back, often worse than before.

When we address the whole animal—their physical, emotional, and energetic needs—we enable the body’s natural ability to heal. This empowers you to support your animal’s long-term health, not just chase symptoms, which can be frustrating, upsetting, expensive and unproductive.

Let’s shift the narrative, holistic modalities work when we honour their purpose—to support the whole being, not just the symptom.

What’s your experience with holistic care? Let’s start a conversation about what true wellness looks like.

🪻 What is an Essential Oil? 🪻

They are concentrated hydrophobic liquids containing volatile chemical compounds from plants. These aromatic compounds are part of my holistic tool kit as part of self-selection for animals.

Essential oils come from flowers, leaves, bark, and roots, offering the plant's natural healing properties in a potent form.

Animals have an incredible sense of smell and can intuitively choose the oils they need. t’s a gentle, non-invasive way to support emotional balance, relaxation, and physical well-being.

💡 Note: Always use oils under the guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner. Animals are more sensitive than humans, so proper dilution and safe practices are key!

On November 14th, Bonnie, my spirited 6-year-old Saluki mix, took a hard fall while playing with her friend. Although adrenaline masked her injuries at first, she soon showed signs of distress—coughing, retching, and licking a large wound near her right hind leg. 🐕💔

Here’s how I supported her recovery with a tailored, holistic approach:
✨ Wound Care - cleaned with aloe vera spray.
✨ Aromatics - Bonnie intuitively selected Wintergreen, Comfrey, Manuka, and Lavender oils to ease pain, reduce inflammation, and support healing.
✨ Topical Ointment - custom-made with Shea Butter, Comfrey, and her selected essential oils to soothe and repair tissue.
✨ Nutrition Boost - Lamb/goat bone broth for collagen support.

Over the next few weeks, Bonnie's interest in different remedies shifted as her body healed—a testament to the power of self-selection in animals. 💜 Her energy returned, her wound healed beautifully, and her scar tissue is fading with continued care.

💡 Takeaway: Trust your dog’s instincts! Combining natural remedies, patience, and observation can do wonders for recovery. 🌟

Look at those magnificent wiskers! 😺✨

Cat whiskers, also known as vibrissae, are deeply rooted and highly sensitive. They pick up tiny changes in air currents, helping cats detect objects and movement, even in the dark. This is why your cat can sneak up on toys (or you!) with such precision.

A cat’s whiskers can give you clues about their emotions:
- Whiskers resting calmly to the side mean your cat is content and at ease.
- Whiskers pushed forward show curiosity or excitement, like when they’re exploring or hunting.
- Whiskers drawn tight against the face can signal fear, stress, or defensiveness.

Cats use their whiskers to measure spaces and judge if they can fit through tight spots. If their whiskers touch the sides, they know it might be too snug. This explains why their whiskers are as wide as their body!

Constant stimulation of whiskers (like eating from deep bowls) can lead to “whisker fatigue,” causing discomfort. You might notice your cat pawing at their food or being fussy. Switching to shallow, wide bowls can help.

Whiskers help cats sense when objects are near their face, aiding in grooming and protecting their delicate eyes.

Fun Fact: Cats even have whiskers on the back of their front legs to assist with hunting and climbing!

Next time you see your kitty, take a moment to appreciate these remarkable whiskers—they’re a big part of what makes your feline friend so unique.

Did you know animals have an innate ability to choose their own medicine?

Botanical Self-Selection, or Zoopharmacognosy, is a fascinating window into how animals instinctively know what they need to heal. When given the opportunity, animals naturally select specific plants, essential oils, or herbal remedies to rebalance their body from the inside out.

At Hedgerow Healing, I honour this natural intelligence. My approach allows animals to guide their own healing process, listening to their body's wisdom and supporting their innate capacity for balance and restoration.

🌟My latest blog post is live!🌟

If you've ever noticed your animal nibbling on dirt or clay, you might have wondered why they do this.

At first glance, it seems like a puzzling, even unhealthy behaviour. However, from the study of how animals self-medicate (zoopharmacognosy) using natural substances—eating dirt, known as geophagia, serve an important purpose in maintaining health and addressing nutritional deficiencies.

Animals, and even humans, have long turned to soil for its medicinal and nutritional benefits. In this month's blog we delve into the top 3 reasons your animal friend might be eating dirt!

Last night, I had a session with little Roo, who’s been stressed by the recent fireworks.

At the start, she was trembling with fear, the loud booms unsettling her completely.

To help, I offered her a few aromatics to see what might bring her comfort. Roo chose Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) essential oil—a powerful choice for calming anxiety and stress.

Within just 10 minutes, she stopped shaking and melted into my lap, peacefully resting her head on my hand containing the diluted oil. 💞

This process, known as applied Zoopharmacognosy, is based on the natural animal behaviour of self-medication. When given choices, animals can instinctively choose certain plant extracts to bring them back into wellness.

Here’s how it works:
🧠 When Roo inhaled the Valerian Root aroma, the scent molecules connected with her olfactory receptors. These signals travelled directly to the limbic system—the brain area responsible for emotions and memory. Valerian Root is known for its sedative properties, which can help lower anxiety levels by balancing neurotransmitters and hormones related to stress.

Roo’s preference for Valerian Root isn’t unusual! This plant has been used for centuries to relieve tension and promote calm in both humans and animals.

Seeing her go from terrified to tranquil was truly special. 🌿💕

✨ NEW BLOG ALERT ✨

Meet Jasper, a 4-5-year-old mixed breed rescue from the Azores. This handsome guy faced some tough challenges—skin allergies and fear-based reactivity. But through my six-month holistic program, "The Path to Wellness," we worked together to peel away layers of imbalance and find lasting natural solutions.

By focusing on botanical self-selection and his nutrition from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, we addressed not just his physical symptoms but the deeper emotional roots of his issues. Jasper’s story is a beautiful reminder that with patience and the right approach, our furry friends can overcome their struggles and thrive.

Why you shouldn't give your animals ice & ice cream to cool them down‼️

When the summer heat hits, you might feel tempted to give your dogs and cats ice or ice cream to help them cool down. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) sheds light on why this might not be the healthiest choice for your fluffs.

👉 Cold Can Affect Digestive Health

In TCM, the digestive system, known as "Spleen Qi," plays a vital role in overall health. Cold foods can upset this balance, leading to digestive issues like bloating, diarrhoea, and stomach discomfort in your fluffs.

👉 Imbalance in Body's Qi

Maintaining internal balance is a key principle in TCM. Introducing cold items can shock your fluff's system, disrupting their natural Qi flow and potentially weakening their immunity, paving the way for various health concerns.

👉 Alternative Cooling Approaches

Cooling Diet: consider offering a TCM cooling diet comprising foods that naturally cool the body, such as duck, cucumber, watermelon, and select leafy greens in moderation.

Cool Water Access: make sure there is fresh, cool (not cold) water available in every room your fluffs visits to promote hydration. You can also let them go for them to go for a refreshing dip like Bonnie. Just be sure to check there is no blue-green algea in the water source.

Utilise Fans: use fans to keep the air circulating and ensure your fluff remain comfortable, especially in spaces without air conditioning.

Remember, during the summer, it's not just about managing the temperature for your pets; it's about preserving their overall balance and well-being. 🌿💖
