Nails 💅

Nail trims are included with all grooms at Marfa’s Mutts

However sometimes a dog’s nails don’t need to be trimmed. If the amount that can come off is tiny as the quicks are almost at the end of the nail, it’s not necessary.

It can be a risky business, especially with black nails, we don’t want to catch a quick. If there is hardly any nail to come off, your dog can probably wait until their next groom when we can check again

Every dog is different and has different nails and lifestyles. At Marfa’s Mutts we treat the dog’s individual needs at every appointment and give experienced, professional advice every time

Welcome Karmann 🤎

It’s not very often we get asked to poodle a doodle!! Karmann is actually an Australian Labradoodle. What a lovely girl!

This was a big job today. Total restyle and she was pretty grown out. I loved every minute of it though

So fun to get to do a poodle trim and I’m really pleased with how she turned out

Well done Karmann… was a long sesh!! 🌟

Douglas is my biggest challenge. He’s been turned away from several groomers and has ended up with me (lucky boy! 😄)

Douglas runs into the salon full of sweetness & light. He lives with children who play with him & love him dearly. I give him a bath & dry & he’s fine. Then I trim his face with scissors & he closes his eyes soothed by the snipping. This pic was taken just as I was finishing his face.

Then it’s time to clip his body & legs. This is where Douglas turns. Every time. He becomes a very angry gremlin 😢 I can’t even get a muzzle on him. It’s too dangerous to try. So I have him secured on the table with a groomers helper so that he can’t turn around and bite me (believe me he means it when he tries) & I use a combination of bite gloves & ninja style reactions to keep myself safe.

I have to pull my table into the middle of the salon as I’m unable to turn him around during the groom. He hates me going around to his other side. So I move very slowly & give him a little time to get used to the fact that Iv switched.

The sound of the clippers makes him mad. I clip as much as possible & finish any bits I can’t get to with scissors. I’m super gentle but often he’s not happy with this either. Shaving his sanitary area is a no no, I have only been able to complete this once, on his first visit. Since then even touching his back legs brings out his worst gremlin side.

Once Iv done all I can I let him off the table & he is scrabbling up my legs for attention. He’s back to his usual self. His owners are so lovely and very understanding - “Just do what you can” & they always ask if I’m ok. They have no idea why Douglas is like this for grooming & at home they are very tactile with him although he still won’t let them brush his sanitary area or clip his nails.

The groom is never fully complete. While I’m desperate to turn this behaviour around, he isn’t getting better yet. He’s been 4 times now.

The reality is, I can’t win them all but I’ll be damned if I won’t try with Douglas!

Dog grooming is not easy & certainly not glamorous. But I love it. Douglas needs me even if he doesn’t know it and I am here for him 🤎

Had to do a post of this pic of Rudy as I just love it. I was so happy with the groom I did and although he’s not quite facing the camera, this pic shows the groom, particularly his face and him just beautifully. Rudy is a little feisty for some parts of his groom but such a loving boy the rest of the time. Loving having him in the fam. Well done boy. See you in 8 weeks! 🤎

These two are brothers, as in they live together so they come in for their grooms at the same time. I love having them in and I think they like coming 🥰There’s something about Spaniels faces isn’t there?

Welcome Ned 🤎

Ned came for his first groom at Marfa’s Mutts today and he was a champ! A little nervous but receptive to everything I needed to do. I think he’s going to settle in well. Looking forward to seeing him again soon.
Well done Ned! 🥰

Rufus 🤎

Rufus came for an EmmiPet ultrasound teeth clean today. He did really well for 45 minutes and then decided he didn’t want any more so we stopped. Appointments are booked for an hour.

Lots of plaque was successfully removed but there is still some more to work on. We have booked a follow up but will have to see if Rufus is happy to proceed again next week.

Otherwise he will need to be referred to a vet for sedation. His owner doesn’t really want this as sedation makes him poorly afterwards. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that Rufus is happy to have some more treatment next week at Marfa’s Mutts!

Ultrasound teeth cleaning is super non-invasive. No vibrations from the brush at all. However a dog needs to be receptive to having the brush in their mouth for a time and for me to go in and remove any stubborn plaque using a tool.

Unfortunately not all dogs are receptive to this process without sedation. But we can try! For dogs who are receptive the results are incredible! Chewing on a bone after ultrasound has loosened the plaque can also help more of it break away by itself.

Rufus is nervous boy so i’m very proud of how well he did. Despite having had enough of teeth cleaning he was comfortable and affectionate with me once he knew we were finished. Well done Rufus! See you next week to attempt round 2! 🤞🤞🤞
