Happy International Chocolate Day! 🍫

While we humans can indulge in chocolatey treats, it’s important to remember that chocolate is toxic to our furry friends.

Keep an eye out for symptoms of chocolate poisoning in pets, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing and increased heart rate. If your pet shows any of these signs, contact your vet immediately.

If your dog ingests chocolate, keep the wrapper and estimate the amount consumed to help your vet provide the best care.

🍁🍂Autumnal Hazards: 🍁 🍂

Seasonal Plants: Certain plants, such as autumn crocus and chrysanthemums, are popular during this time but can be toxic to pets if ingested. Familiarise yourself with common autumn plants and flowers to keep your pets safe.

Changes in Exercise: As the weather cools, adjust your pet's exercise routine accordingly. Provide appropriate outdoor gear, such as coats or sweaters, for pets with short fur or those sensitive to the cold.

Firework Preparations: In the UK, firework displays often start in late October and November, but some early events can occur in September. Be mindful of your pet's sensitivity to loud noises and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety and comfort.

Decreasing Daylight: As daylight hours shorten, it's essential to consider visibility during walks. Ensure you and your pet are visible to motorists by using reflective gear or accessories.

Allergies: September can bring about seasonal allergies for both humans and pets. Keep an eye out for symptoms such as itching, sneezing, watery eyes, and skin irritations. Consult with a veterinarian if your pet is showing signs of allergies.

Fleas and Ticks: As the weather cools down, fleas and ticks can still pose a risk to pets. Continue with regular flea and tick prevention measures to protect your pets from these parasites.

Mushroom Toxicity: Autumn increases wild mushrooms, some of which can be toxic to pets if ingested. Be cautious during walks and keep your pet away from any mushrooms they may encounter.

Seasonal Shedding: Many pets, particularly those with thicker coats, undergo a seasonal shed in preparation for the colder months. Help manage shedding by regular grooming and brushing.

Harvest Foods: With the harvest season in full swing, be mindful of certain foods that are toxic to pets. Keep grapes, raisins, onions, and chocolate away from your pets, as they can be harmful if ingested.

Antifreeze and Coolants: Some pet owners may start using antifreeze and coolants for their vehicles as temperatures drop. These substances are highly toxic to pets, so be cautious and keep them stored securely away from your pets' reach.

We were so pleased to hear an update on a little red squirrel who was taken in to our Formby surgery in early July. She was looked after initially by one of our nurses, then transferred to The Wildlife Trust for ongoing care. The first photograph was taken just after admission, the second just before her release into the wild. Good luck little one!

serves two purposes 🔽

1️⃣ A day to celebrate all blind dogs in the world and ways we can support them – as all dogs are good dogs.

2️⃣ Highlight that whether partially or fully blind, they can lead a fulfilling life with a great quality of life!

Owners support blind dogs by creating a safe space, not rearranging home furniture, and training methods such as using audio cues to help make navigation easier and giving them sound-based toys to make play easier for them.

This is only a slice of ways we can support blind dogs.

And the beautiful Loki is demonstrating both purposes perfectly 💖 Thank you to Tower Vets, Knaresborough

This litte guy spent the afternoon at our Formby branch today, saying goodbye to some unwanted visitors he'd picked up. Check the comments if you dare for a photo of the surprising number of ticks that our nurses removed for him. As you can see he's feeding up and will be released this evening.
