Dr Ali Patrick: Clinical Director and Advanced Practitioner
Ali has been qualified over 20 years. Her special interests include emergency and critical care, ultrasound scanning and heart scanning. She also enjoys mentoring and training other vets as part of the new graduate development programme and in emergency and critical care medicine and surgery. Outside work, Ali enjoys exploring different countries, languages and cultures or relaxing at home with her family, which includes 3 cats.

Heat stress starts as a reversible condition, but if not managed it will develop to heat stroke, which is extremely dangerous.
If your pet shows any of these signs, they should be moved to a cool area and offered plenty of water to drink.

Unlike us, pets have no understanding that hot weather can be harmful. We control their environment, their access to water and their exercise, and they can’t speak up if they start feeling unwell. Heat stroke can rapidly progress and, even with veterinary treatment, is often fatal.

Deafness is rising in the UK; by 2035, it is estimated that one in five British people (over 15 million) will experience hearing loss. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds like the smoke alarm, alarm clock and even a baby’s cry. Their burgundy coats also act as a visual reminder to the public when they are out and about that their partner is deaf. Donations raised through Pennies when you pay by card help support Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Just a small donation can make a big difference!

Since you cannot check your rabbit’s teeth at home, it is important to look out for signs of dental disease.
There are many things that you can look out for that might indicate that your rabbit has some sort of dental health issue.
If you notice any of these signs, it is important that you bring your rabbit to your vet for an oral assessment as soon as possible. Stopping eating altogether is an emergency.

Both indoor and outdoor rabbits require vaccinations to keep them safe from infectious disease. Young rabbits are particularly vulnerable to serious illnesses, so it’s important to get them vaccinated early.
Rabbits can be vaccinated from five weeks old and will need yearly booster vaccinations throughout their life to maintain immunity.

Flystrike happens more often in warm weather, and in rabbits who have soiled fur (often due to poor diet, obesity or arthritis).
Throughout the spring and summer rabbits must be checked twice daily and any soiled fur cleaned. If you find any sign of fly eggs or maggots you must arrange for your rabbit to see a vet as soon as possible.

Recently we have had several hedgehogs be brought in to practice. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and only come out at night. Generally, any hedgehog out during the day is probably in trouble and will need to be picked up and taken to a wildlife rescue centre or nearest vet. You can pick them up using gardening gloves and put them into a cardboard box, although they are good climbers, so you would need to ensure it cannot escape. 🦷 Pet Dental Awareness Month🦷 Rabbit Teeth 🐰 Did you know that rabbit teeth grow throughout their lives!? As you can see from this video of pumpkin, rabbits do a lot of side to side grinding when eating fibrous foods such as grass and hay, which is why their teeth are always growing. If rabbits don't eat enough fibrous foods their teeth can overgrow causing painful spikes called spurs that can grow into their cheeks or tongue. If this happens we can treat it under an anaesthetic and burr the overgrown teeth down.
