The reality of dog behavioural modification/it’s more than just dog training ! I often get clients talking to me about the dog training ion TV, social media, TikTok Instagram etc and how fast their results are! This is so damaging to the hard work a behaviourists puts, we feel like we’re not doing our job efficiently when it takes several weeks but on telly it took 20 minutes ! This picture below speaks volumes to me, to you guys, It’s a lovely picture of a group of dogs at training class, in reality every single dog except the one I’m holding is exceptionally reactive in their own unique way and to be less than 4 foot apart is an incredible achievement in less than six weeks. Now this picture isn’t perfect, this picture took over an hour of hard work from all the owners to a Climbatize their dogs to the environment, introduce different Dogs, move about and start listening to the owners as well as everything else going on in the background of normal community centre. The animals welfare was paramount and I did say to the owners at the beginning if any of the dogs were over threshold would call it and we did for two of them. However this picture was meant as a landmark for the owners because reactivity behaviour can be soul destroying and I wanted a visual representation for the owners to show how far they have come!
The course was six weeks which seems like a long time, but each dog was allowed individual training because I don’t Ram my classes, Which meant I could spend more time with each dog. Then take into consideration everybody’s personal lives, Work, health, travel commitments and life commitments and this means that training can take longer simply just because of time and life, so when you’re watching these snippets of TV presenters having a go at dog training please keep in mind that it is completely a reality TV show and nothing in real time that you watch, please be patient with your behaviourist/trainer. There may be a reasons why they’re going slow and also consider the behaviour itself, if it’s something that has been with the dog 5+ years is not going to change in one session despite the claims that some dog trainers are making,
Credit to these dog owners for all the hard work.
