Changing behaviours takes time, but this lad is a testament to that, working really hard his owners gave him the time he needed and today he played really really nicely with another dog my Willow some of you may recognise her from the reactive Dog classes and I use her quite often in training because she’s very neutral, and other dogs seem to gravitate towards her! Well done pal to many more days playing in the sand ###

I’ve noticed a lot of these dog trainers getting tagged in posts and rated very highly, I implore you to look deeper than reviews and likes! Lots of dog training accreditation can be done online over a few sessions with literally hundreds or associations to choose from! Names Especially with titles like Master , or master guild they mean nothing! 6 years+ of degrees and 5 years + of shadowing, a lifetime of training and the rest of my life of CPD plus monthly seminars is what it takes to be a behaviourist! You can only become a behaviourist with over 3years shadowing and a level 6 degree! I am monitored and regulated!
For dog trainers you can trust got to the DOG CHARTER!
For BEHAVIOURIST go to - ICB- international canine behaviourists !
The only places to be a registered behaviourist are:

International Canal behaviourists (ICB)

Animal behaviour and training council (ABTC)

Association of Pet behaviour counsellors (APBC)

Clinically certified animal behaviourist (CCAB)

A picture tells 1000 words, this may just look like handsome border collie having a playtime but it’s quite incredible how far this lad has come. Last week we attempted something that we haven’t been able to do throughout his whole training and he smashed it, we still have stuff to work on and anyone that knows border collies, knows how complex they can be. But he’s a smashing lad stunning to look at and fun to be around so I’ve no doubt he’ll continue to thrive, with positive support and understanding of his fabulous owners.

Public service announcement/ common sense!

If you have a REACTIVE dog, do not take it to the beach on a sunny busy day when there will be lots of people, kids, and dogs off lead! And furthermore, do not then put a pinch collar on them and rag its head off when it loses the plot!!! Anyone with a reactive dog - take it slow! Go to off-lead fields and strengthen your bond and obedience training! Walk in areas not likely to be busy - do this for several weeks! Ask a friend to be a stooge! And pass by as a massive distance, train your dog with minor distractions! Build this up very, very slowly - the dog should not react!!! Only when the dog stops reacting to triggers do you even consider going to a busy place!!

The reality of dog behavioural modification/it’s more than just dog training ! I often get clients talking to me about the dog training ion TV, social media, TikTok Instagram etc and how fast their results are! This is so damaging to the hard work a behaviourists puts, we feel like we’re not doing our job efficiently when it takes several weeks but on telly it took 20 minutes ! This picture below speaks volumes to me, to you guys, It’s a lovely picture of a group of dogs at training class, in reality every single dog except the one I’m holding is exceptionally reactive in their own unique way and to be less than 4 foot apart is an incredible achievement in less than six weeks. Now this picture isn’t perfect, this picture took over an hour of hard work from all the owners to a Climbatize their dogs to the environment, introduce different Dogs, move about and start listening to the owners as well as everything else going on in the background of normal community centre. The animals welfare was paramount and I did say to the owners at the beginning if any of the dogs were over threshold would call it and we did for two of them. However this picture was meant as a landmark for the owners because reactivity behaviour can be soul destroying and I wanted a visual representation for the owners to show how far they have come!
The course was six weeks which seems like a long time, but each dog was allowed individual training because I don’t Ram my classes, Which meant I could spend more time with each dog. Then take into consideration everybody’s personal lives, Work, health, travel commitments and life commitments and this means that training can take longer simply just because of time and life, so when you’re watching these snippets of TV presenters having a go at dog training please keep in mind that it is completely a reality TV show and nothing in real time that you watch, please be patient with your behaviourist/trainer. There may be a reasons why they’re going slow and also consider the behaviour itself, if it’s something that has been with the dog 5+ years is not going to change in one session despite the claims that some dog trainers are making,
Credit to these dog owners for all the hard work.
