They may look like they will be a good tasty chew for you pooch and be a cheaper alternative to natural skins... But do you know what your feeding and how bad they are?

The process for making rawhide for dogs involves several steps, including:

Cleaning: The hide is cleaned with detergents and degreasers, and sterilized with hydrogen peroxide.

Separating layers: The hide is treated with chemicals like lime to separate the layers of skin.

Drying: The hide is dried out.

Bleaching: The hide is bleached with strong chemicals to make it a more uniform colour.

Preserving: The hide is treated with artificial preservatives to make it last longer.

Flavouring: Artificial flavours like beef, chicken, or liver are added to make the rawhide more appealing.

Shaping: The rawhide is cut or ground and pressed into chewable shapes.
