🧬 Please help our colleagues at Cambridge by sharing this post with your English Springer Spaniel owning friends, to help unravel the genetic causes of epilepsy in the breed!

🐾 Many Border Collies who took part in RVC epilepsy studies over the past few years have already contributed their genetic swabs to the Cambridge (formerly AHT) team who are generating promising results in this breed too.

Hello

It takes a village to raise a child….

On Saturday 29th March, between 10am and 1pm, in our Kings Lynn practice we will once again be staging an event for young people considering a career in the Veterinary profession. We will be inviting in a maximum of 20 children aged between 8 and 16 who will need to be accompanied by a parent or carer for the duration.

The session is designed to inspire. Grasping carefully the small flicker of a dream that has already been kindled and gently allowing the flame to grow by giving the youngster a chance to meet real life grown up nurses and vets. We will discuss the importance of education and exams - the fact of life route to qualification. We will look at a day in the life of each skill set. We will discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of our job. The kids will get a chance to see our equipment and where appropriate and safe we will let them handle and use some of the kit.

As a business we have always invested in young talent. We employ around 70 people with an average age across our business of 28. Tarn, one of our Vets, first started here as a 15 year old on work experience. Megan was a 14 year old Duke of Edinburgh, once a week visitor and now holds a senior nurse position under our roof. Amy was 16 when she first came through our door, is now a qualified Nurse and mum of two children. Katie was 17 and is now Finance Director, Breeze was 18 and is now HR Director. Jack who attended the last session of this nature that we ran, is now studying to be a Vet down in Bristol. Ciona, assistant Nurse Manager came to us as a 16 year old….

We all have a responsibility to ensure our kids have the best chance - and again, it takes a village to raise a child, we need to pull together.

The event will be booked on a first come basis. Please email me direct - [email protected]. I will confirm your place within 24 hours.

This event features as part of our ‘community’ plan for 2025. Each month we are staging a free event out of our Kings Lynn premises on a Saturday morning. It’s our way of giving back.

We are Vets 1.

Please think before routinely treating for fleas and worms.

Please think before routinely treating for fleas and worms.

The standard practice in the UK is to advise a preventative approach, treating pets every couple of months even if they don’t have fleas.

But flea treatments include powerful insecticides that have been found to leach off pet fur – and the hands of their owners – into waterways. A recent study also found that songbirds are inadvertently killing their young by making nests out of contaminated pet fur.

There is growing concern about the impact these treatments are having on biodiversity. Imidacloprid and fipronil, for example, are powerful insecticides: one monthly flea treatment for a large dog contains enough imidacloprid to kill 25 million bees.

Spalding & District Dog Training Club would like to congratulate Alison with Costa & Debbie with Alan on being selected for the Northern Team in the Crufts Inter-regional Obedience competition.

The team consists of 8 dogs from across the "Northern" region. This year 98 dog and handlers took part in the try-outs and the selectors had the unenviable task of whittling them down to the final few. The team then competes against the other regions from the UK.

It's a great achievement for Costa and Alan, as both of the boys are young and in their first season of competing.
