Hypothermia
Hypothermia is when an animal’s body temperature drops too low, it can be caused by being out in the cold, blood loss, certain illnesses and occasionally during a sedation/anaesthetic and it doesn’t always just have to be very cold weather. If it isn’t treated quickly it can cause the whole body to shut down and even cause death.
Most pets can cope with a small drop in body temperature, but a large, or sudden drop can cause problems. Symptoms of hypothermia include:
*Shivering which is a natural response to help the body warm up but if they’re too cold they often stop shivering completely even though they’re still hypothermic.
*Drowsiness alongside confusion
*They can be a bit wobblily or clumsy
*Pale gums
*Loss of consciousness/collapse and coma
If you think your pet is suffering from severe hypothermia it’s important to act quickly which ultimately could save their life. Firstly, make sure they are dry, if they are wet it will be harder to warm them up. Using warm blankets both underneath and over them will help them warm up. If your pet is able to drink using lukewarm water is best, but don't try to if they aren't interested. Make sure the ambient temperature is increased but be cautions not to do it too quickly and make sure not to use anything that could cause a burn such as a hot water bottle without being VERY careful.
