Plasma Transfusion
🥰 This little girl was thoroughly enjoying her plasma transfusion! 🥰
🌟 Plasma transfusions are required if foals have low antibody levels. This can most often occur due to a difficult foaling, delayed suckling, poor colostrum quality or the mare 'running' milk prior to foaling 🌟
🦄 The receptors in a foals stomach which absorb the antibodies from the colostrum start to close at 6hrs of age so it is vital foals are feeding well with good colostrum prior to this🦄
🐴 A simple blood sample at 24hrs old can confirm the level of IgG (Antibodies). Low IgG can cause foals to become sick very quickly and they are more likely to develop conditions such as joint ill, diarrhoea or septicaemia 🐴
🌟 We blood sample all foals born here at 24hrs and are able to run the blood test onsite. If a low IgG is confirmed a Plasma transfusion is carried out to quickly return the IgG to a safe level and prevent any complications! 🌟
