Learn all about teeth chattering with us🐵❤😁!

As humorous as it sounds, it isn’t too much of a stretch to compare us to Barbary macaques!

Like us, Barbary macaques use communication as a vital tool within their community, day-to-day.

Thanks to the research conducted in our parks, primatologists have been able to identify around 100 different communicative behaviours and their respective meanings.

Isn’t that incredible?!

Teeth chattering is one of those communicative behaviours and is a lovely one to talk to you about 😁

This communicative behaviour is when a monkey bangs both rows of their teeth together to create a clacking sound 💢

This communication can be used in a number of ways:
👉 Submission - monkeys can perform a teeth chatter to show submissivness when showing respect to a higher ranking monkey. You might see a monkey also show it's rear end,whilst chattering, to further show submission.

👉 Friendly interaction - teeth chattering can be likened to smiling 😊, sometimes the monkeys 'smile' at eachother to be friendly. This can be seen often when two males are bonding over a little baby Barbary macaque.

👉 Re-assurance - sometimes to re-assure a crying baby for example, a monkey might teeth chatter to let them know everything is all okay!

After a spot of rainfall over the weekend at Monkey Forest, this monkey seemed to be loving the rain, making a puddle his dancefloor 😂!

It made hilarious watching for those that saw 🤣🤣🤣

These characteristics can even help us to identify certain individuals - say if a monkey has quite profound features.

For example, some have more profound markings in and around their eyes 👁

The Babies are Exploring 🐒✨🤩!

Now the 10 baby monkeys are between 1-3 months old, they are starting to get very confident ... 🙈

It is amazing to see them grow each and every day in our unique forest, learning the Barbary macaque way in amongst their respective groups ❤

We are now seeing them engage in more playful antics with the slightly older 1-2 year olds as well as monkeying around in the Trentham treetops 🥹🌳!

Barbary macaques are one of the most fascinating primates in the world. The young ones particularly are known for their playful and mischievous nature 🥹🥰

One of the most interesting things about Barbary macaques is the way they communicate with each other using facial expressions. One such expression is the “play face” 🤣

The play face is a facial expression that Barbary macaques make when they are in a playful mood. It’s a combination of a smile and a grimace, with the corners of the mouth turned up and the lips pulled back to reveal the teeth 🤪

The play face is often accompanied by other playful behaviors, such as chasing, wrestling, and jumping around 😎

What’s fascinating about the play face is that it’s not just a sign of playfulness – it’s also a way for Barbary macaques to communicate their intentions to other members of their group 🤩

For example, if a monkey wants to play with another monkey, it might make a play face to signal its intentions. The other Barbary macaque can then respond with a play face of its own to show that it’s ready to play 🙊

A baby monkey has arrived... but this one wasn't a surprise 👀 Back in March, we shared with you the wonderful news of a successful ultrasound scan done on a monkey at Monkey Forest. The first-ever one, a complete rarity! The scan confirmed an adorable bundle nestled safely within the belly of a female monkey nicknamed Pretty, who was confirmed to be an expecting mum 🥰 We asked you to help us guess the gender of the baby by analysing the scan, as we needed help... for the chance to win a private tour of our 60-acre Monkey Forest 🐒🌳 Watch to find out some amazing news about our SIXTH arrival of the year and the results of our prize draw 👀

𝗙𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 - 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗜𝗡 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡❤️🐒 𝘞𝘦'𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 / 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘔𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘢 🙌‼️ We are thrilled to share the impactful outcome of Dr Sharmini Julita's work of which Monkey Forest helped fund as part of our conservation partnership with the Primate Society of Great Britain 🌿 Dr Sharmini Julita Parmasivam received funding to complete her project to reduce drivers of human-monkey conflict in Malaysia. Dr Sharmini’s project involved designing, proto-typing, and rolling out monkey-proof bin latches to prevent Long-tailed macaques from accessing human food bins. Approximately 7,000 complaints are received yearly in Malaysia regarding these macaques and accessible human waste bins were a primary driver for the presence of the macaques in urban communities. A prototype of a monkey-proof bin latch was designed and tested by the Animal Neighbours Project in 2020, a community-based project led by Dr Sharmini, a veterinarian and senior academic at the University of Surrey. The outcomes revealed the latch to be incredibly effective at preventing the macaques from accessing bins. It was also seen that the monkeys wouldn't return to the bins, as they quickly learnt that they couldn't get in them👏 Latches were installed in a few areas to test the longevity and effectiveness of this device. Two years on the residents in the pilot study report that the latches are still working to prevent monkeys from accessing food waste! This will have a hugely positive impact on the welfare and conservation of Long-tailed macaques in these urban areas. Amazing work Dr Sharmini, thank you 🐒❤️ 👉 𝗪𝗲'𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃

Goodbye 2023👋🎉❤️ This year we… 👉 Opened our Brand New Monkey-Shaped Willow Maze ✨🙈 👉 Delivered over 700 Feeding Talks - sharing our knowledge of Barbary macaques whilst highlighting important conservation issues during hourly feeding times🐒 👉Saw snow cover the forest… TWICE❄️ 👉 Hosted a cinema screening INSIDE the Monkey Forest of the Barbary macaque Dynasties Episode for the team🐒🎥 👉 Gave all the monkey mums a rose on Mother’s Day 🌹 👉 Supported Bees through working with the North Staffs Beekeeping Association 🐝 👉 Welcomed 9 beautiful Barbary macaque babies who arrived into the world🐒 👉 Turned 18 years old🎂 👉 Observed the forest change with the seasons 🍂🌿❄️☀️ 👉 Hosted our 3rd Annual Member’s Evening - a Q&A with a David Attenborough Film Producer 🤩 👉 Supported important conservation projects led by the PSGB & Chances for Nature 🌿 👉 Welcomed more researchers in to expand the Barbary macaque knowledge in the academic field 📝 👉 Introduced a brand-new Private Tour Experience in Winter 🤩🌨️ And… We shared our love of nature and Barbary macaques with all of our amazing visitors in 2023 - who could make magical monkey memories at Monkey Forest ❤️ Thank you so much for supporting us and the monkeys this year🐒👏 Everything we do to support this endangered species is made possible by you 💛 We look forward to re-opening in February 2024 and doing it all again 💫 Happy New Year and we hope to see you again soon✨ The Trentham Monkey Forest Team ❤️🐒
