🪰🐝 Fly Parasites 🐝🪰
As the weather gets warmer we’ve started our fly prevention plans on farm.
The parasitic wasps or flies will hatch once spread in sheds and prevent nuisance fly eggs from hatching.
Comprehensive fly management plan ✅
Spread every two weeks by a member of the team ✅
Reduces use of chemicals ✅
More sustainable ✅
Sheep scab! Here's a video of one I took looking down our microscope last week. Horrible little mites that cause severe itchiness and lesions in sheep. If you want to discuss prevention and treatment of scab and other skin parasites give us a call.
Animal handling safety.
Our thoughts go out to the three farming families who have lost loved ones whilst moving cattle and TB testing in the last month.
We know that safety can sometimes slip to the back of your mind when you’re busy. Especially with the pressure of TB testing on your time.
Please take five minutes to check everyone knows their escape routes and how to use the handling system properly before you start testing. (Also if you’ve shown us how to use the head yolk you can totally roll your eyes when we let a cow through by accident)
We’d always rather have a five minute delay than an awful accident ❤️
🪶 Starlings - they’re on their way 🪶
The murmurations will be starting again as we head into winter. Now is the time to think about prevention techniques to stop starlings spreading salmonella and E. coli among other things! Netting, PVC strips and bird scarers are all options.
If you’re worried about the risk of disease transmission in your herd or you suffered with an influx of starlings last year have a chat with your vet.
Adapting in times of heat stress risk.
Garden sprinklers tied above the shed to give a bit of extra cooling while the girls wait to come into the parlour.
If you’re at all concerned about heat stress give us a call at the practice.

🐮 Dehorning with sedation 🐮
We’ve been talking a lot about the benefits of this recently.
If you’re dehorning batches of calves sedation can make the process quicker, easier, less stressful and safer for everyone involved!
If you’re interested in trying this on farm have a chat with one of us!

🐮 Digit amputation 🐮
Shes walking out so much better than when she came in following the procedure!
We can amputate individual digits if a cow has septic arthritis / extended toe necrosis / a fracture of the bones in the foot.
The process is quick and most importantly the cow feels nothing. It allows us to salvage cows that may have had to leave the herd due to chronic lameness.
We put her in the crush, tie her leg up and apply a torniquet, then we inject local anaesthetic and wire off the affected digit.
The foot is bandaged and a block is applied to the other claw to elevate the wound off the ground. This bandage will be changed in 2-3 days and full healing will be seen in 5-6 weeks.

☀️Feeling the heat? We all know next week is going to be tough.☀️
Reduced DMI, milk drop, mastitis and reduced fertility are all likely when cows suffer from heat stress.
On an individual cow basis: panting, salivating and even collapsing can be seen if heat stress becomes extreme.
Ensure fresh, clean water is available at all times and try to avoid stressful handling activities over the hottest times next week.
If individuals show signs - cold water hosing and pumping with fluids can help decrease temperature.
Also please look after yourselves too, you’re no good to us with heat stroke! Shade, sun cream and water (yes, even if you’re just in the tractor all day!!!)
☀️💧🐮
Do you have a farm protocol for drying off?
When using selective dry cow therapy, hygiene is key.
Talk to us about a dry cow consultation on farm. We’ll bring the cake 🍰

It's that time of year again: live lungworm larvae from a recent sample brought into the surgery.
In the dairy herd, a reduction in your bulk tank is seen, along with frequent coughing when cows are walking to and from the milking parlour. Infection of susceptible cattle can result in a dramatic reduction in milk yields of up to 50 per cent, with possible deaths. With very large larval numbers on pasture, disease can occur in adult cattle vaccinated as calves but not subsequently challenged for several years. Lost milk production could reach £1.50 to £3 per head per day with recovery taking 10 to 20 days after treatment.
Clinical signs: Frequent coughing especially after short periods of exercise, increased respiratory rate at rest
Diagnosis of patent lungworm infestation is based upon the demonstration of lungworm larvae in the faeces , drop a sample into the surgery and we can check if for you, and set you on the right path to treating/preventing any problems you may have on your farm.
