Are your pets ready to face the cold? 🐾 🌨️Check our list below for some of the most essential seasonal precautions:

❄ Keep your pets inside during harsh weather conditions, and keep an eye out for signs of frostbite if they have the chance to be outside.

❄ Antifreeze, commonly used during winter for car maintenance, is highly toxic, and ingestion can be fatal, so ensure you keep it out of your pets' reach in sealed containers.

❄ Check your pets' sleeping spaces for drafts or cold spots that may make resting uncomfortable, especially for older pets with achy bones or joints.

How do you keep your pets safe and warm during winter? We'd love to know!

Worrying about toxoplasmosis during pregnancy is quite natural, so here’s what you need to know about it:

🐀 Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Most of the time, cats become infected upon ingesting a mouse or bird that carries it, which means that your cat is more likely to be infected if they have outdoors access;

🤰 As for humans, infection can result from poor hygiene after changing the litter of an infected cat, but it most often results from other sources, such as eating contaminated foods;

😺 You can prevent it by changing the litter daily, before the parasite becomes infectious, or by avoiding handling your cat’s litter altogether during your pregnancy. If that’s not possible, use disposable gloves and wash your hands afterwards; and avoid feeding your cat raw or undercooked meat.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions or concerns regarding toxoplasmosis and your feline companion.

Do you own an XL Bully dog? If so, you’re probably aware that the Government has announced plans to ban the XL Bully “type” starting 31st December 2023.

From this date, it will be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL bully dogs to stray in England and Wales.

Later on, from 1st February 2024, it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.

It’s important to note that the Government has outlined an official definition of an XL bully breed type based solely on physical characteristics, so even crossbred dogs can be included in this ban. You can check if your dog fits these characteristics on this page 🔗 https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/official-definition-of-an-xl-bully-dog/official-definition-of-an-xl-bully-dog

Do you donate regularly to a charity or charities?

As you may know, each month, we choose one charity that is special to one of our team members and make a donation. This month, we are supporting the Wildlife Aid Foundation.

The Wildlife Aid Foundation is an animal charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of British wildlife.

This Christmas, can you help support the Wildlife Aid Foundation by donating?

Christmas is almost here! 🎅 Many owners know that treats with chocolate, raisins or sweeteners can be very dangerous for pets, but how can we make this time special for them as well?

One of the best ways is to take a little time to make some pet treats to spice up the party 🐕🐈. You can make these with simple, everyday ingredients like flour, xylitol-free peanut butter, lean meat, bananas, low-sodium broth or oatmeal.

Share your best homemade pet-friendly treat recipes with us, and don’t forget to include your furry friend’s reviews!

With the cold season upon us, we start bringing out the antifreeze to use in our cars and around the house. ❄️🏠

As many pet owners know, antifreeze often contains ethylene glycol, a dangerous chemical that causes severe kidney damage. This compound doesn’t taste bad, which might attract the attention of pets, especially outdoor cats, who might struggle with water access due to freezing temperatures.

Even a small amount can cause severe or even fatal problems! Be very careful when handling antifreeze containing ethylene glycol, always clean spills, and call us immediately if you suspect your pets might have ingested it!

Becoming an RVN takes at least three years of intense studying and training. 📚

In the wild, rabbits spend their time digging, running, jumping, hiding, eating, and socialising with other rabbits. 🐰

Enrichment is all about allowing your bunnies to carry out their natural behaviours by encouraging physical and mental stimulation, which in turn improves their quality of life.

Our pets can be creative when it comes to causing havoc, so make sure to keep an eye on what they’re up to during this busy season!

Here are some of the most common seasonal hazards:

🎄Fairy lights, decorations and even the Christmas tree itself can be the cause of trouble for curious pets, as they can try to chew, eat or climb them and injure themselves in the process.
🍫 Festive foods and drinks, such as chocolate, mince pies, raisins and alcohol, are toxic to pets and shouldn’t be left within their reach.
🔋 Children’s toys may require batteries that can cause nasty burns if accidentally ingested.

Also, it’s important that our pets have a quiet space they can retreat to if they feel overwhelmed.

What did we miss? Share your best safety tips in the comments ⬇️ to help raise awareness of other potential dangers!

Could your pet have eaten something poisonous?

If your pet is faster than the sp*ed of light, especially if you drop a tasty seasonal treat, it’s important to be aware that some of our foods can be poisonous to them!.

But, unfortunately, it’s not just food. There’s a range of substances, from human medication to decorative plants, that are not safe for them if ingested.

If you’re ever in doubt, use our online poisons guide to assess the risk of poisoning and contact us immediately if your pet needs help:

Have you ever wondered if dogs could cry? 🐶💧

Like us, dogs produce tears that help keep the eye healthy by providing lubrification, flushing contaminants from the eye's surface, and providing nutrients to the cornea. 👁️

Unlike what happens with us, tear production in dogs is an exclusive physiological response and not an emotional one!

If you notice dog has watery eyes regularly, book an appointment with us!
