π₯ Itchy horsesπ₯
Horses that itch repeatedly can be difficult to manage and frustrating to treat. Here at Thompson House Equine Vets we can do Intradermal skin testing to identify possible triggers for allergic skin disease.
The aim of this is to understand what makes your horse itch and try to minimise exposure or create a desensitisation vaccine to increase your horses tolerance to specific triggers.
πHow it works:π
Your horse would be in our clinic for 24hours.
A large area on your horses neck will be clipped.
Multiple injections are performed under the skin and measurements are taken at the reaction sites.
Please get in touch with reception on 01257422618 to book your horse in.
Quiz time!!
Many of our wonderful clients will remember we used to run a quiz each week. It used to generate some great chat and some funny answers.
We had an interesting ultrasound today and we thought what a great excuse to share with everyone.
So the question is;
What is it? No prizes this time, sorry!!
Don't forget about our spooktacular Halloween photo competition for the chance to win a number of prizes, as shown here by Oliver and John. You might also make it onto our wall of fame at the practice office.

Stamping on Flu Together
Stamping on Flu Together
Following on from our recent statement regarding a case of Equine Influenza here at Thompson House we thought we should run a campaign in December to raise the awareness of Equine Influenza.
During December we are running a Stamping on Flu Together campaign for unvaccinated horses, where you can get one free vaccine** as part of your horseβs primary vaccination course. Get in touch to find out more and to book your appointment.
Did you realise all horses are at risk of flu, even if they donβt leave the yard?
Other horses travelling to and from the yard, even those that are vaccinated, can pass on the flu virus without showing any signs themselves.
**Vaccine cost only, visit fee and administration fees still apply. The offer is only open to horses that are over 6 months of age and have not yet been vaccinated against equine influenza or are overdue an annual booster. Vaccination to take place in the offer month.
Laddies' return from Colic Surgery
Laddies' return from colic surgery.
We loved seeing Laddie a few weeks ago for routine vaccinations and dental treatment and can happily report he has made a full recovery from his colic surgery.
Laddie presented to us back in November 2020 for colic that wasn't responding to conservative, medical treatment and was subsequently referred to The University of Liverpool Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital for surgery.
At the time of surgery Laddie had a displacement of his large colon which had become trapped between his left kidney and his spleen (a nephrosplenic entrapment). This was corrected and his colon was then emptied by way of a small incision in the colon which was then stitched closed. Laddie recovered well from his surgery and recieved a short course of fluids, antibiotics and pain relief. Laddie continued to make good progress and was discharged within 6 days of his surgery.
We have a very close working relationship with The University of Liverpool Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital who are our primary referral centre. The hospital is a world leading centre for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of equine colic in all its forms and I am sure they will be very pleased to hear about Laddies' progress almost a year on since his surgery.
If you would like any more information about the services we offer please do not hesitate to contact us on 01257 422618 or at [email protected].

Can anyone tell us what procedure took place at Thompson House last week?
Something for the weekend
This is one of our lovely clients 3 year old, Apollo leading the way walking and trotting on the Middleham AWT. He is also spending time in the arena doing basic flatwork and getting used to the riders aids. They are very pleased with him and we look forward to sharing their future success on the track.
